Re: Why punch with the closed fist in Krav Maga?

Remember Krav Maga is all about instinctual reaction. Your first reaction might be the old familiar punch in a high stress situation. When you have time to reassess the situation you might switch to something else. I personally find it easier to form a punch while doing a burst defense like 360 and do palms when on the offense there after.

Re: KMWW for iPhone & iPad ?

I just got this app and its a good start. They still have a lot of videos and functions they need to add before its complete.

KMA has also put out a new app. I like the way they are adding techniques grouped together by belt level.

These apps are incomplete but have great potential.

P.s. some 3D animation like on human weapon could’t hurt, hint hint…:box:

    Re: Fist Hardening.

    Do not do it!

Fist hardening is fracturing the bones in your hand many times and letting it heal then doing it again. By doing this your bone takes on a different stronger structure. You’ll notice that if you break a bone it becomes harder and thicker in that place. The down side is you eventually lose your fine moter skill.

Punching is a fast and instinctual reaction but as you begin to improve you will find that the palm strike is a great alternative. It is also a great leadin to grappling.

Re: Anyone recommend good punching equipment?

I now use an everflex freestanding bag from Everlast. It’s portable and great for striking. A couple sets of jigsaw floor mats keeps it from retreating.

Re: different types of Krav maga

When Imi the founder of KM passed there was some dispute about leadership. IKMF and KNWW teach the same KM only under different leadership. KMA is made up of members of both organizations. Its main goal is to teach and improve KM without being political.

As for Commando and other organizations, the name Krav Maga can not be copyrighted so anyone can use the name. It means Contact Fighting. From what I can gather CKM is not considered by the practitioners of the above mentioned organizations true KM as designed by Imi.

    Re: Press, Media & Journalism

Thank you for all your replies!

I will train and take your advice to heart. My role as a journalist and NPPA member is tell tell a story in pictures. I also think it is unethical to tell only one side of the story.

As for imbedded journalists, a good one will focus on the facts and make every effort to stay out of the way. They are an added burden and a good journalist will know that. Our job is to serve the public not ourselves and many of us have died trying to enlighten the would.

I have been taking KM here in Pittsburgh and everyone is extremely helpful! They also are great at addressing everyone’s specific needs.

    Thanks again for replies!

    Re: Press, Media & Journalism

Most of the time people think I’m a passerby. I am friendly and many times people are happy to share their stories, especially if they think some injustice has been done.

When I was covering G20 I actually had people grab me and take me to where they saw protesters being subdued by police. This does not happen normally but occasionally being taken to unknown places is part of the job.

I will post some pics later. Getting led somewhere often leads to a rich story but can be dangerous.

    Re: Press, Media & Journalism

Thank you for your quick replies!

Is a well trained Press Photographer I know when to back down and because of this I am very seldom put directly into harms way. If I feel that my presence could result in any agitation I move to a safe distance if able. I am in NO way looking to be part of the situation, only document it.

As for training in Krav Maga, I plan on using my people skills and my politeness to resolve 99% of any problems I encounter. It is only that 1% where someone actively seeks to harm me or destroy my equipment where I would consider using it. Even then my primary focus is to get to safety.

I hope I did not cause any misunderstanding.

I will be attending KM training with National Security Graduate from Point Park University and a police officer I know. They said they would also work with me on some press related drills and simulations. I Will probably be doing the training with my camera and lenses on or something. I will let you know how that turns out.

    Re: Press, Media & Journalism

    Thank You all For Replying!

I have been very busy so I have not had the time to post.

I have worked for various papers in Pittsburgh such as The Almanac/Observer Reporter. In Honduras I covered day to day life as a photo essay. I am also contracted by Allegheny County to document engineering and parks projects.

What I have come to realize is that when I am covering a story I run into problems with 3 unique situations:

    1. Some people do not want the Press around and think if they destroy their equipment they will go away.

    2. I am carrying expensive, cumbersome equipment which restricts my movement that can not be removed easily (nor will I let them steal it if I can help it).

    3. If my self-defense actions, though justified seem to aggressive I might inadvertently insight violence toward other Journalists.

I hope to find suggestions here on how to defend myself and my equipment so as not to escalate any situation. The police have enough on there hands and must deal with their own situation rather than mine.

Most of what I deal with are threats from people who don’t want their friend or family member’s face and name showing up in the news the next day. I feel bad for them but its my job and I know that at any time they could through a punch or try to slap the camera from my hand.

I hope to here back from you all. Thank You!

    Re: Press, Media & Journalism

I hope you do not concider my post or this thread spam. I wish to use this post at an outlet for press to speak about safety issues while reporting.

Journalists are in fact civilians and that fact is not a grey area. Let me refrase by saying although we are civilians we are often the target of violence that the average person is not caught up in. I hate to say it but we in some cases purposefully place ourselves in harms way.

We deserve a special skillset designed for these situations.

P.s. Those are my pictures taking in or around Pittsburgh. The first one was used as The Almanac’s (a Pittsburgh paper) front page headline pic!
