Re: What did you do in Krav Maga class today?

I don’t have a regular Krav Maga class due to I’m often travelling and my local class is intermittent anyway. So a lot of my KM practice is solo or with training partners when we can meet up.

This is what I’m doing todyay:

Before breakfast – I did 30 minutes of stretching to start the day. That’s a mix of yoga & pilates. Then feeling good and primed I did a set of one man drills: these are actually two man KM combat exercises but since I live alone and I was not in the gym, I do them alone. I visualize my opponent and give them hell! That’s just about another 20 minutes.

Later today I’ll go for a high intensity run. That’ll be about 5km jog interspersed with 10 x 100M sprints – totally knackering!

I mix up my training into stretching, drills, strength training and low / fast intensity runs. A good rounded program.

Re: Looking for input on good DVD instruction

From what I’ve seen a lot of the KN Videos (and books) are more concerned about volume of information rather than succinct quality. At the end of the day the KM techniques that work are simple, they just need to be practiced and honed so that they are reflex / instinctive. That means practice, lot’s of practice of the basics.
Guy Dar has done a respectable job of conveying the Krav Maga basics with his short video series which you should check out.
There is a review here at http://www.kravmagatrainingvideos.org/. This site also has a pretty interesting ebook to download – a KM training program which is OK (a bit intensive for my taste) and also some fine combat tips (some ruthless stuff that doesn’t take prisoners). The reviewer seems to know what he’s about.

Re: I can’t kick above the waist!

I train – and encourage training – to kick above the waist. BUT this is simply develop stretch / mobility / balance. It’s an exercise ONLY. NOT for combat!

Kicking above the waist in a H2H is NOT RECOMMENDED in 99% situations. It takes longer to deliver. You’ll be exposed whilst your kicking leg is raised. And if you miss then you’ll be off balance – and the really exposed.

Kicking above the waist looks good in the movies, it’s a good exercise to do in the gym / dojo. Just don’t take it onto a real fight.

Re: What marital art would you like to learn?

It all depends on what the objective is doesn’t it?

For self defense then opt for something like JKD / Krav Maga, even western boxing would be a good start.

If your looking for a formal system then there is sooo much to chose from all the CMS / JMA etc :dunno:

If I was looking for something new… Aikido. Very cool and is a good augment to anything else you already have.

    Re: Whey Protein Facts

Whey can be very helpful for building body weight / muscle mass… and strength as it provides the building blocks for new muscles. My only observation is that most wheys are made from milk (cow) and if – like me – you are lactose intolerant then you’ll not be doing yourself any long-term favors (not withstanding any short term muscle gains that you might make).

So, go for Soya based products. Here is a compare & contrast:

This one is about Whey protein: (search on whey)

Otherwise you can maybe go for tried and tested Creatine – very popular with body builders, legal and easy to get hold of and no side effects.
