Re: Help with sizing my hand wraps

If you’re going to use wraps, stick with the longer ones. I’m a scrawny bean pole of a guy and the 120″ wraps were too short for even my girl-ish wrists. Like it was said already, with the longer wraps, you can always just wrap extra which gives more support to the wrist.

Have a great time. You’re going to love it!

    Re: Domestic Violence

Let me add to my $.02 if I may. I said that the question of safely training again is irrelevant because after a year this person would already have more than enough knowledge to be VERY dangerous and that because the underlying issue is not Krav, but rather a tendency to be violent.

However, I feel the need to clarify. If the underlining issues were solved (I.E. rehab for alcohol abuse and counseling to control anger and/or violence) I see no reason why this person can’t “safely” train again. Of course, the risk is that this person would be even more proficient in causing harm if the person ever decided to do so again. But again, IF the underlying issues are corrected, I don’t believe that training in Krav, or any other martial arts for that matter, would lend towards a relapse.

    Hope that makes sense.

    Re: Domestic Violence

Hypothetically, if a man trained in Krav and then decided to abuse his spouse, drunk or not, I’d have to say that the problem is not Krav, but rather alcohol and a violent man.

The question as to whether or not it would be “safe” to train in Krav later is irrelevant because this man would already have enough knowledge after training for a year to do serious damage.

Again, the underlining issue is not being ABLE to hurt someone but WILLING to hurt someone. So, if alcohol makes this man WILLING to hurt someone, then that person should seek help in dealing with 1) his alcohol problem and 2) his violence problem.

    Just my $.02.

While no branch of service that I know of trains specifically in Krav Maga, I have seen some things in various branches that resemble a little Krav and more importantly, try to instill that never give up mindset of Krav. I’ll exclude any comments about the Navy since that’s not an option for you. I have worked with Marines in the past, most recently in a 3-week Auxiliary Security Force training that included Marine Security Cadre teaching a bunch of Navy, Air Force and Army people how to be security guards. We covered some hand to hand stuff and while it was not Krav Maga by any means, their H2H premise was that of simple strikes, knees, elbow, low kicks, etc.

As for the Army, since I haven’t worked that closely with them I can’t say with 100% accuracy what the entirety of their program consist of. I have seen part of their training video that talks about the basis they try to build from. It’s more ground work than stand-up in my opinion and because of that, I’d say the Marines are closer to Krav Maga than the Army.

Now for the career advice! 😉 If you want to get into Federal LE in the future then the choice to join the Army is a pretty clear winner. The Marines do not have an investigative law enforcement entity of their own. Because the Marines are part of the Department of the Navy all the investigative work in regards to Marine issues are done by NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service). There are some Marine Special Agents that work for NCIS, but they are very few and far between.

So, in regards to complimenting your Krav, I’ll give the nod to the Marines. In regards to setting yourself up for a Federal LE job, I’d say Army. You’ll have to decide which is more important to you.

As for the other point you made on \”wanting a job which demands I keep in good shape\” the Marines and the Army are your ONLY choices. The Coast Guard, much like the Navy, by in large does not hold their people to high standards of physical fitness. I do work with one Coast Guard Officer are a fairly regular basis so while Iím not the authority on this by any means, Iíve discussed it with him before and his opinion was the Coast Guard does not make fitness a high priority.

In this regard I would rank the Marines #1 and Army #2 in terms of the branch of service holding its members to a high standard. This will also depend allot of the particular unit and who runs them. You may find that some Army commands have higher standards for their members then some Marine commands. However, regardless of the branch you decide on, the ultimate responsible for your success, in fitness and in the rest of your career, will rest on you.

Best of luck to you and I hope everything goes well.

You guys that are hitting multiple classes a day, multiple times a week, how do you do it? Do you have a wife and kids? Do you work, are you a student? Just curious how you fit it in.

I have a wife and kids and don’t get home from work until about 5PM on weekdays. With those kinds of \”obstacles\” training can be hit or miss. Case and point, my wife and kids were out of town so I was able to hit 8 classes from WED to SAT last week. However, I haven’t made it to a class all week. Tonight will be the first class I get to and I might make one more this Saturday. So as you can see, it varies greatly from week to week.

I try to work out at home on the days I can’t make it to the class, just to keep up some level of exercise. Luckily for me, my 3YO daughter is already obsessed with working out so she keeps me motivated while we’re doing squats, sit-ups, push-ups, jumping jacks, and laps around the dining room table. She’s a great personal trainer!

    u beast Navy…:)

I don’t know about all that. Just tried to make up for some of the classes I’ve missed in the last few weeks.

    P.S. – I did 4 classes on Saturday!! 😈

My understanding is Amok (Tom Sotis) is doing a seminar there in Febuary and another in June…..Oh yeah, yours and P1 advice helped alot with keeping the feet dry. thanks

I’ll dig up some info on that. Sounds like a good time.

As for the feet, glad to hear the recommendations are working out well for you. For such a small part of the body, feet can sure make the rest of you miserable when they’re not treated right.

Though this comes from expirience as people with that kind of info either always try to test you or try to put you in the middle of crap you don’t need to be in the middle of……

    Is Manassas Close?

His question was based on the fact that he’s an Aikido student and I’m a Krav student. He was only wondering how someone with Krav training would handle the scenario vice an Aikido guy. I’m quite certain I don’t have to worry about him testing me OR putting me in an akward situation.

Manassas isn’t too far from me at all.

This is going to sound very sarcastic but, DON’T GET HIT! 😛

Seriously, my nose bleeds pretty easy too, although I’ve only had it hit once so far (I’m sure it’ll happen more as I start sparring more). I don’t have any solutions to keep it from bleeding, but I would say that this is a good motivator to make you work your footwork and defenses so it doesn’t happen very often!

I try to go MON, TUES, and THURS and occasionally I’ll try to sneak in a SAT. Doesn’t always work out that way of course, by my goal is at least 3 times a week. On MON, WED, and FRI I try to run and do calisthenics also. Again, doesn’t always happen, but that’s what I have on the schedule.

My wife and kids are out of town this week so I’m making up some lost time. I got in 1 class on MON, 2 on WED, 2 on THURS and hopefully 1 or 2 this SAT!! 😈

    Well, I was close…

\”You are Cro-Cop, the Croation Sensation. Nobody can beat you standing up because your Kickboxing skills are just too good. If anybody tries to take it to the ground you just avoid the takedown as if it was nothing. On the ground your first goal is either to nullify your opponent or stand up again, so you can fully use your advantage in striking.\”
