On the chest protectors – my center has the heavy duty ones the students can use if we end up doing techniques like defensive kicks in class during sparring for instance

Don’t blame you there! That’s cool you have heavy duty chest protectors. If I’m working with someone who kicks reaaaally hard, I just use two pads 🙂

Seems to me last time I saw you you had a red man suit on. I just assumed you always trained fully protected.

HA! Nope, only on special occasions…

Those groin protectors are intimidating! 🙂

Yes, that’s along the lines of what I saw for a bra – the guy at the shop said he’s never sold one..

Who said only guys wear cups? Hubby grazed me ONCE (wasn’t even that hard). No way I go to class without minethumbsup

I’ve thought about getting one – getting bumped in the ladybits is NOT fun at all.

I saw a special sports bra at the local fight shop, that had places to put a cup. That seemed a little extreme to me. Very Madonna circa 1990’s.. :):

I love it! If I were a dude, I’d wear a cup to everything. You just never know! 🙂 But seriously, in Krav – it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

It protects the babymaker – and gives a very satisfying ‘pop’ sound when you make contact. And yes, I make contact.

Re: Training with gloves or not

I almost never wear handwraps anymore. If I’m in a Level 1 class, I don’t use gloves. Level 2 and above, definitely – ditto for cardio.

Of course, I have gnarly man knuckles now – but I save time on hand-wrapping! 🙂

Re: Is it normal during an introductory class to just about give up?

It’s perfectly normal. And after a while, you really do acclimate – and then you want to push yourself even HARDER. Or maybe it’s just me that actually enjoys being sore? 🙂

Wow! Congrats, Sean! I have to say, I’m a little jealous….seems like every guy I know makes simple diet changes and drops a bunch of weight. We women have it much harder! 🙂 But awesome job for you, nonetheless.

    Re: Krav Maga and Sex

I say bring it. I’d have no problem hurting someone intent on hurting me. The key being ‘intent on hurting me’. If it’s someone getting a little grabby at a bar, I’m not going to start off with a groin kick. But someone tries to grab me and take me somewhere? It’s on. I always say that you come at me with 100%, I’m coming back with 250. I may not be as big or as strong as you, but I will overwhelm you with aggression. You can count on that.

    And my favorite quotes:

“They bought the ticket, they get to ride the ride”
“If you open it, you get the whole can”

    Love them.

Re: Lethargic moves and the efficiency of the lessons

If you try to do something super fast and super aggressive, the first time you learn it – you’ll never get it right. I’m guilty of doing that myself – I’m highly competitive, and I like to do things well – and aggressively! – from the very beginning. My instructor has taught us that you have to do things slowly and accurately to build that foundation before you can do it fast.

That is not saying, however, that you can’t do something slowly, and still be aggressive. I get frustrated when we’re working, say, a 360 defense and someone refuses to actually swing at me. It’s ok to go slowly, but still go at someone in a realistic way.

All that being said, if I’m training with someone who’s brand new, I want them to have a good experience – so I’m going to give them some some success, make them feel like they’ve learned something – which will bring them back. And it’s true – if they get beat up and/or hurt their first class, they’re not likely to come back again.

While the Fight Quest instructor was entertaining – elbows in the face are good TV! – it’s not realistic for normal training. Remember, the hosts on that show are trained MMA fighters, so they’re used to getting hit in the face. The average KM student is not.

Bottom line: While it is important that you don’t do things halfway – my instructor would never put up with that! – that doesn’t mean you need to go fast, hard and aggressive while learning.

And if you DO like to train hard – find someone who likes to train hard with you! It’s why I almost always train with guys – the tough ones, that is.. 🙂

I used to go to HB almost every weekend when I was out in Cali with the Armed Forces.

🙂 I grew up in Michigan. My parents live up North, in West Branch. I go back to visit once or twice a year – my brother lives in Commerce Township, if I’m ever down visiting him I’ll have to look you guys up! I always want to visit other schools…

Re: Did anyone else feel dumb at there first class?

Oh yes – I felt really, really dumb. And not just for the first class – for a few months. The only thing that makes it better is training more – and then you get to that point where you body DOES what your brain tells it to. And let me tell you, that is pretty sweet. 🙂

    Re: Second Amendment Defense

See – I don’t understand why Obama gets elected, and everyone goes on a gun buying frenzy. I have no problems with guns- my Dad owns several, and he is a DEMOCRAT POLITICIAN in Michigan (how’s that for breaking the mold? 😉

I don’t own any. And I don’t plan to. And I guess I have enough faith in our President and political system to think that the 2nd Amendment won’t be totally abolished. But then again – I am from California, and I voted FOR Obama and AGAINST Proposition 8. 🙂 What does that make me? (that is a rhetorical question, by the way)

Besides – isn’t it more fun to kick someone than shoot them?

    😉
