Re: Possible ACL Tear, How will I be out of action?
I tore my ACL near the end of March, I had surgery May 6 and did the hamstring graft. I’m still recovering; I have graduated to home therapy. I have been amazed at how fast conditioning and strength left me. I am now allowed to run but no pivoting sports yet. My next doctors visit in early November when he will decide if I can start pivoting sports again and if I need a brace or not. Stopping (taking a break from?) Krav after going regularly has been very frustrating. I hope to be back at Krav in a limited way by the end of December or early January.
Everyone’s recovery is unique. Carefully follow your doctor and therapists instructions and do your exercises. The simple goofy movements your therapist tells you to do make an incredible difference. Don’t exceed what they tell you to do or you risk re-injury. Many people hurt themselves at the four month mark by ignoring their doctor and doing too much. http://www.kneeguru.co.uk is a great place for information. One more bit of advice, carefully go over your insurance plan and be sure you are going to the right therapist and doctor to maximize benefits. This stuff can get really expensive quickly.
Good luck, I hope you have a speedy and successful recovery.

RFC: The ACl tear happened in fight class. My partner was too enthusiastic (or perhaps I just need to improve); I jabbed; he stepped offside and simultaneously swept my leg while landing a punchóat least thatís what I think happened. My foot did not move along the floor and my knee gave way. The ACL was torn at the femoral attachment, along with tearing and bruising the muscle around it. Stuff happens sometimes.
Miriam: thank you for the perspective. I declined to use donor tissues for similar concerns. I guess I am in for a long slow recovery; no Krav for a while. This sucks.
Iím going to have to figure out some way to keep the weight down and retain the little conditioning and muscle I have.

In addition to the other comments made (performing under stress especially), I think sparring helps you to learn “distance” better then pad work in class. It’s whole different thing to hit pads even with a great partner, then to try and hit a person in sparring. Also, there is no better reminder to keeping your hands up then the instant feedback your partner will give you in sparring. 🙂

I travel a little for work; when I am in a city with Krav and have time, I call the place up and ask if I can work out with them. I have always been graciously welcomed at each location. If you travel, do yourself a favor and check out the local krav. Youíll meet new people and get a new perspective on techniques. A workout is far better then sitting in a hotel room or bar! I have found very high quality instructors at every location.

He sold the concept to the History channel and has participated in the production of the show. Terry also can be ìseenî on the show; he is one of the people used for the cool computer ìanimationî showing the techniques. –David

Personally I do not want to go to the ground with a person if I can avoid it, they may have a friend nearby that will pound me while I am tied up on the ground (or just be a better grappler).
