You got tasered, too? We should put all of those videos on youtube for all to enjoy. So far looks like Brent was Mr Tough guy, smiled through the whole thing, while all of the others were screaming in pain. I’ve also seen him slide the sparkling shocknife across his chest as if it were nothing. He apparently doesn’t feel pain. thumbsup

    Re: UFC kids

I think BJJ tournaments or wrestling may be okay, because there may be less fear of serious injury. But if they punch and kick each other in the head (such as in Muay Thai, Boxing or MMA), that could cause serious cuts or concussions and doesn’t seem to be safe for a young child, at least not at a competition level.

    Re: Scissor Kick

The scissor kick takedown is fun to try in a swimming pool. The water hold you up a bit and it facillitates the move.

Makes me think of the Shocknife and the “Brent is getting tasered” video…

    Re: Gun Disarm Actual Video

Didn’t see it, so I don’t know if it was a KM technique. I don’t think we’ve discussed how to do a third party defense from this position “KM style” before.

What the officer did seem to work well, although if he grabbed only the arm, the gunman could have potentially dropped the weapon into the interior of the car, making it harder for the deputy to get to it. Would it have been safer if he had tried to grab the barrel of the gun instead? Or maybe the arm and the barrel, then pull the arm out of the vehicle and twist the weapon out of the BG’s hand (the way one would do for gun to the side in front of arm, or a more regular third party defense)? Just some thoughts, don’t know what the official KM answer is and I didn’t see the episode, so I’m trying to picture it in my mind.

    Re: ikmf or kmw?

I love the system, so I think it’s wonderful to have an opportunity to train with all kinds of different instructors, whether they are American or Israeli. That said, I think the KM techniques themselves are all very similar with only a few minor differences, so you should be okay at any school of one of the major organizations.

As for the drills in the video, the first one didn’t seem so bad, probably a warm up exercise using KM techniques, which would be more fun than simply running around in a circle. The grabbing the puck thing went on for a bit, but we really don’t know the context. May have been another warm up, or a short part of a much longer seminar. You really can’t judge the training of an entire organization based on a few grainy video excerpts on youtube.

    Re: UFC kids

UFC monitored by lawmakers? Ugh. I’d say no. Wasn’t it McCain who coined the term “human cockfighting”? As for kids competing, I guess it’s no more dangerous than boxing, Muay Thai or BJJ. They should definitely be allowed to train in it and any competition should be monitored to assure it’s safe for younger kids (minimal risk of injury). Once they get a little older, maybe around 12 or 13, I suppose they can start to go a bit harder.

On the notes of kids in MMA by the way, this makes me think of the opening celebration of Legends MMA gym in Hollywood. Several big name fighters were there, such as Randy Couture and Bas Rutten.

They have a big Octagon outside on the patio and there were two little kids (looking like 6 or 7) sparring like pros, hitting, takedowns, submissions, pretty impressive. Later it turned out, those were the kids of Rampage Jackson!

Re: what do you like in a KM class??

Maybe getting hit in the head won’t make you tougher, but I do think that conditioning your body can help you to learn how to better absorb a punch (and thus enable you to keep on fighting in a real situation).

I remember, when I was a new student, I was not used at all to getting hit. One time, I got bruised ribs, just from holding the pad for an instructor, who hit it pretty hard. Another time, I was sparring and someone (lightly) kicked me in the ribs, which also bruised them. As I was taking more classes, I felt myself being able to absorb hits much better. In addition, lifting weights and doing ab crunches etc also helps develop a stronger body. Of course, it’s not a magic bullet and there are millions of other – possibly more important – things to work on, but conditioning your body some can be useful in my opinion.

Re: what do you like in a KM class??

I think working more on weapons defenses or starting on them a bit earlier than LV4 might make sense. LV1 could teach you the basics, then in LV2 they could at least mention connections between the 360 defense and knife attacks, or how one punch or elbow will work in a gun defense. Then one could start teaching weapons defenses actively from LV3 instead of LV4, which would give students several months to learn the basics. If certain students don’t feel comfortable with weapons defenses yet, they could always opt to stay a little longer in LV1 or LV2. Also, other students may come in already knowing basic punches and kicks which might make it possible for them to get started on weapons a little earlier. There is also the possibility of having special weapons classes, for those interested in attending them.

We used to have only 4 levels of KM, meaning that weapons defenses would start in LV3 and as a result there were a lot more classes teaching weapons and students would see these defenses earlier. Maybe one could go back to this (keep the current levels, but still start weapons in LV3).

    Re: Kick Defenses

I’ve actually been thinking about this, especially because I’m smaller and might not be able to take shin against shin contact if I’m dealing with a much larger attacker, no matter where his shin meets mine. The idea is to absorb the shock, let your leg give a little as you are making the defense, then push back out, but I’m still not sure how well it would work against a much bigger guy in real life.

If I had any time at all, I’d prefer to move out of the way, with less time, I might prefer the absorption technique (leg stays on the ground and you tighten your muscle as the kick hits). I think I could take a kick to the muscle better than to the shin, although if the guy is REALLY big and a good kicker to boot, maybe that won’t work either (if the guy knows what he’s doing, he can just lightly place his leg on yours with all of his weight behind it and it hurts, even without any velocity, so even worse if he actually kicks hard).

So, I don’t know. If you are fighting someone roughly your own size, with some training and the adrenaline pumping, you could probably make one shin vs shin defense and still keep on going. Same for absorbing with the muscle. If the person is much bigger, moving in or out may be preferable, yet it may not always be possible.

    Re: Gun defense question

For those who have tried the gun redirection with a real gun and without ear plugs: Do you think that the noise was so intense and startling that it might have interfered with the rest of your defense in a real situation? Did it make you flinch or hesitate for just a moment or disorient you?

Has anyone with very small hands ever tried it? Might it make a difference?
