    Re: urban krav maga???

    Hi,

    Very interesting thread.

From my understanding, I think that besides the principles that have already mentioned here, we can add:

    – transitioning as soon as possible from defensive to offensive (although it might have already mentioned)

    – initial defenses using the instinctive response of your body (for example, in the case of a choke from the front, the most likely reflex will be for your hands to travel up towards your throat so might as well plucking)

    – techniques have to be simple enough so everybody, regardless of age, sex or fitness conditions can perform them efficiently.

    – do whatever it takes to get out of it safely, whether it’s finishing up the fight or creating an opening where one can run to safety.

I am sure I am missing some and others will chime in.

Another thing too but I am not sure if it can be consider a principle of the system but more of a training method: always train from a situation of disadvantage.

    Best,

    Olivier

    Re: Belts and Levels?

When you start you’re level 1 (white belt) learning level 2 (yellow belt) materials. After you pass your test for level 2, you become a yellow belt (or level 2) student learning level 3 (or orange belt) materials and so on. You are basically always learning materials of one level above yours.
The confusion sometimes comes from that the actual classes are named after the level of the students not the level of the materials that are taught.

I hope it helps and I didn’t add more to your confusion.

    Re: So Much Pressure

    Hi Dave,

Good luck on your test tomorrow.

As for the chin defense, I personally like to finish it off by laying on the ground and meditating there for a while.

    See you in level 3

Re: Gun defense against a wall

    Thanks Brent.

In this particular case, where should the initial gun redirection be directed to?

Re: Is This Indicitive Of ATA

    Hello all,

I don’t have any personal experiences related to ATA schools. However, I’d like to give my 2 cents on few things that have been discussed in this thread.

Like Psyops, I have issues with schools that promote kids to brown and black belts, regardless of the MA that is taught. It’s something that I have only encountered here in the US and I have always been curious about that, how do the belts awarded to kids translate later on? It is my understanding, and please correct me if I am wrong, that in KM-X, there are also belts/levels but that they don’t translate into any jump start for the adult version, meaning that when a kid who went through KM-X is old enough to start taking adult classes, they’ll still have to start at level I. Is it the case for other MA?

On another point, I agree that I don’t train for a belt and a belt won’t do me any good in a real life situation if I don’t know the materials and the principles behind the system. However, I do find belts/levels useful for a couple of reasons.
First, and I can only talk from a student perspective, it seems to me that having the system broken down in levels allows a student to build on by starting with fundamentals and easy techniques and then moving to more advanced techniques that require a good knowledge of these said fundamentals, and that organization in levels in the curriculum makes for a smoother transition.
Another advantage of a belt/level system is that anyone can train anywhere with ease as being of a certain level under KMWW means the same thing for everybody regardless of who you trained with or of who tested you.

Sorry if I hijacked the thread, as I said it was just my 2 cents.

    All the best,

    Olivier

    Re: Defend against martial artist?

I am sure that others more knowledgeable on the topic will chime in and answer your question more completely. But my interpretation of KM as a system is that it gives you principles and tools such as defenses/counterattacks/strikes that you can use against any unexpected attacks and not only against a predetermined scenario. Based on that, I don’t see why KM couldn’t defend against other MA. Besides as it was pointed out somewhere else on the forum, winning a fight is not only about techniques but also about never giving up.
