Re: seeking advice about a local gym

I’ve trained with Richard quite a bit, and can honestly say he sticks true to Krav Maga. He considers his school a “black belt” school, but that does not mean you will get your black belt after six months. They break each level up and have mid-term testings along the way to ensure your foundation and proficiency in each level before you test out.

You are at a very good school with very good instructors. 🙂

Hey James! I, too, live in northern MS- Tupelo to be exact, and I believe that I’ve found a legit Krav school in South Haven. It’s called Krav Maga Desoto, and it appears to be the real deal.

I’ve trained with several of the instructors at KMD. Their Krav is legit.

I think they’re just jealous of you, PG.

BTW, is your new school a KMW school? If not, did you resume training at your current level?

I don’t think it’s jealousy. Everyone is really nice and interested in how we trained at my old school.

The school is not a KMW school. It’s technically a KMA affiliate. However, the instructor doesn’t follow the curriculum. He has his own spin on everything.

Re: A 3rd party perspective on you.

I just moved and had to start training at another school. Most of the students have been training under a year. They tell me I’m too aggressive, but the instructor says my Krav is too technical and pretty. 🙁

    Re: Phase A advice?

Hydrate!!! I can’t emphasize that enough.

Stretch every morning and every night.

Know and embrace the teaching template. I think KMW might teach this to you during Phase A. I went through KMA’s instruction certification, and we were expected to not only already know it but use it. People learn in a variety of ways. The template is designed to reach everyone.

Be confident in your teaching while being able to explain the teaching points clearly and concisely.

    Analogies are your friend.

Stock up on Aleeve, KT Tape, braces, and muscle rubs. It’s better to have everything you could possibly need than be left wanting.

Go in with an open mind. They will teach you exactly to way the techniques should be both performed and taught.

Take a pen and notepad. You’re training with and learning from the best of the best. Take notes on everything: drills, warm-up ideas, analogies you’ve never heard, questions people ask, etc. By the end of each day, and especially the week, you’ll be too tired to remember everything.

Have fun! It’s a great experience.

    Hydrate!!!!

I am also looking for some inspiration to help keep me on the path any ideas.

At a certain point you have to stop looking to everyone else for inspiration and look to yourself. If you can’t dig deep and find the motivation/inspiration to train then no amount of words from any of us will be able to supply it for you.

Y’know, maybe Crash and I are girly-men (I mean, I do have a Disney princess on my current profile pic), but I think some of our comments illustrate the unspoken sentiment that if one asks for “help” in KM (i.e. go slower or easier so one can learn), one will be considered weak, slow or too uncoordinated to learn the techniques.

Or, you’ll be seen as someone who wants to learn and is determined to get it right. thumbsup

Re: Can’t get pass the white belt level and now I can’t sleep

    quote Magpie:

    So here’s my new plan:

Start jumping rope every day to improve my cardio (1 min/day, then 2/min, and so on until I can go 15 mins/day)
    – Focus on my breathing during sparring.
    – Asking my training partners to go easier on me if I need them to do so. Finding new training partners if they have a problem with it.
Focus on making my techniques sharp, clean and precise. Taking L1 classes regularly in order to hone my basics.
    – Not worrying about who’s better or worse than me in class.
    – Taking as long as I feel I need until I’m ready to test. Doesn’t have to be in 6 or 9 months.
    – Not thinking about eventually making black belt. It’ll happen when it happens. And if it never does, it doesn’t take away from what I’ve already learned.

Great job coming up with a plan! I have two suggestions.

First, rather than jumping rope for only 1 minute a day at first, try jumping for 1 minute intervals with a 30-45 second rest between. This will help your cardio more than a one and done round of jump rope.

Second, practice your techniques slowly to make them sharp, clean, and precise. My students detest slow work almost as much as most small children detest eating veggies. However, they all show signs of improvement afterwards. The hard thing about slow work, for me at least, is keeping the same speed throughout the entire technique. I tend to get excited and start rushing.

    Good luck!

    Re: Discouraged…

One of the best ways to learn and improve is training with people better than yourself. If L3s (almost L4s) are training in a lower level class, then it’s safe to assume they are ok training with people who are also lower level. In my experience, Krav people love other Krav people. I’ve been lucky enough to train at several schools in the US and one overseas and have had nothing but positive experiences at all of them. Even this past week, I went up to train at a school in Ohio. Those students welcomed me into their classes and as their training partner.

As for sparring, absolutely ease into it. Drills are a great way to start.

So, chin up (err, actually down) and enjoy training! 🙂

    quote FearTheFighter:

Then in KM, you don’t know if you’re just going to fold into the fetal position should your nutstrike fail and someone is beating the crap out of you in the street. Or if they get their strike off first and lands it, followed by many more. Your chin has never been tested. Not even ONCE. Hell, it takes years and a lot of hard sparring and getting beatdown, knocked down and knocked out to really test your chin….and keep on fighting as you’re getting the crap beaten out of you by someone much more experienced.

No, it really doesn’t. If someone doesn’t like getting hit then they’ll quit the first time they accidently get popped in class. Those who stay don’t need to have the crap beaten out of them for years. They’ll get knocked down, or out, and then get back up and keep on training.

    quote FearTheFighter:

Which is another admission that you’re scared to get hit in the head, repeatedly; for real.

I’ve trained and sparred with Yoshi. He isn’t afraid to take it or dish it.

    quote FearTheFighter:

Why do you think that there are so many hot chicks in KM while there’s usually none in MMA. You know exactly why you don’t go over to the MMA side of your gym when it’s hard sparring time. C’mon man, I know the drill.

Damn, you figured me out! Guess this means I should stop taking my boxing lessons. 🙁
