I like full contact but not necessarily full power for sparring. A full power punch to the body with boxing gloves is one thing. A full power bare elbow to the nose is quite another. Learning to fight scared and tired is important but Krav excels at that with its drills. Was it CJs Dad who named the Shark Tank drill where half a dozen people grab weapons and come after you just like what might happen in a dark alley in the wrong part of town?

Just going by their web pages, both schools look like they have experienced instructors and they’re both affiliated with legit national organizations (KMW and KMA.) I’d try a free class at each and see which one feels like a better fit.

    quote Don:

Repetitions is the key to just about everything I think. That being said, you have to make sure that you’re repping correctly and periodically test how well the techniques are taking root with you.

Thanks Don, that’s what I was getting at with the read a book thing. Repetition is good and it’s necessary but it’s counterproductive if you’re repeating it wrong.

I was reading about an autistic teenager who was very smart in some ways and physically strong but he couldn’t run worth a damn. His arms and legs would just flap all over the place and watching other people run didn’t help, he just didn’t get it. It took a smart gym teacher to break it down for him (lift your left foot and swing it straight forward, etc.). He could run just fine after that and he couldn’t understand why nobody had ever explained it to him before.

    Re: Slow Progress

    Hey ship,

It sounds like a glib answer but I’m actually serious. Sometimes the best thing for “book smart” people is to read a book. Different people learn different ways. Some learn better by imitation and some learn better by having the theory explained to them. For the latter, once they have a mental image of a physical movement firmly in mind, they can do it better in the real world. Darren Levine’s “Krav Maga for Beginners” is really good at breaking down the techniques.

    Re: Is Krav Maga ‘alive’

    Back to the original point:

    quote :

Particularly as many of the forum posts I read were from people saying they had done krav before switching to Muay Thai, and that the sparring was dead, minimal, nonexistent, etc.

I’ve seen those posts and most of them were written by people who never moved beyond the krav white belt level. If they are really as badass as they claim, why didn’t they quickly smoke all those krav wusses and move through yellow, orange, green, blue, brown, etc? (grin)

But more to the point, the white belt classes welcome everyone. Do these guys really want to kick a 40-year-old housewife’s ass at 100% power???? As you move up to the more advanced classes, the sparring gets a lot rougher. In contrast, most of the people in a Muay Thai class are young and athletic so they can get rough a little quicker.

And most krav schools have a dedicated fight class that’s nothing but MMA-style sparring. Our moderator CJs Dad teaches one and I’m sure he’d be happy to demonstrate some “live” sparring to those internet tough guys. (grin again)

    Re: Is Krav Maga ‘alive’

Bas Rutten likes krav. You’d think that would be enough to shut the knuckleheads on the MMA forums up but of course nothing can do that.

That said, any system is only as good as your instructor and your training partner(s). Like one of our forum members said, there’s krav and then there’s a bunch of other crap claiming to be krav. You’ll have to decide for yourself if your local school is the real deal or not.

    Rousey – Tate, UFC 168

Only one where Rousey has had to go more than a round.

Wow, I don’t think Meisha Tate is THAT bad. She couldn’t beat Rhonda Rousey but she managed to hang with her for a couple of rounds before getting nailed by the patented Rousey armbar. And Rousey was a legit Olympic medalist in judo before she started MMA and she’s gotten a lot better since.

Re: Shin Guards for short people…

    Hey Eris,

Since your school prefers Revgear, I know someone who has these and likes them. They’re more of a traditional Muay Thai guard and they come in sizes from XXS to XXL. Measure your shin and click the size chart.

Re: Is Kudo the answer to a sporting outlet for Krav Maga?

You can wear face-covering headgear for any kind of sparring. There are lots of styles. I’ve seen pictures of Manny Pacquiao wearing this one and it gets great reviews on Sherdog. I don’t think anyone is going to accuse Manny of being wimpy because he covers up his face.

Re: krav maga is not effective in real life !

    quote MadDogMean:

Although there’s not the same frequency of sparring that you’d find in MMA or MT, we do spar.

I was reading an article about Greg Jackson’s MMA gym, one of the best in the world, training Jon Jones, etc. I was surprised that he only lets them spar one day a week. The rest of the time they’re doing drills. I guess even pro UFC fighters can only take getting beaten up so much without it hurting their performance.

Re: krav maga is not effective in real life !

Interesting that someone would purport to tell us how well something works in real life when it’s unlikely he has ever seen it in real life (not many krav gyms in Iran) and his only exposure is some youtube videos.

Reza, if you’re ever in the Los Angeles area, I’m sure CJs Dad would be happy to put on the gloves and give you a full-contact sparring demonstration. thumbsup

Re: Trouble Forming a Proper Fist

Please edit your post with smaller pictures. The big ones make it unreadable.

If it’s just your index finger that isn’t flexible enough, try keeping the last
joint straight and holding it down with your thumb.

    Re: Krav Maga for kids?

Yeah right, it’s better for your 14 year old daughter to get raped/beaten/killed than for her to carry the awful burden of hurting the poor man. Hmmm, what’s wrong with this picture?

It started working again for me when I changed the settings in Firefox for more privacy. I set it to clear my browsing history including the cache when Firefox closes. With broadband, there’s no need to keep a browsing cache on your hard drive — that’s so dialup. :):
