klem2- can you tell me why you feel biased against TKD?
Thanks also gardawg for the links. I have been calling around and getting alot of answering machines but locally to me are mostly karate and TKD but so far not judo. There is one place that calls themselves a Self Defense Studio and say theyre the home of team mei kei or something. There machine has american girl but I have not talked to her personally. Do any of you feel that the training schools run by Asian people are more into the spirituality of it, or again, does it mostly depend on the instructor>?

I already have the dvds and i had been learning the techniques…but thats the whole point…i want them to learn in a group setting with other boys from someone who knows more than i do about how to train. The main reason i stopped training by dvd is because i dont feel it is as effective in my living room with children running around trying to mimic us without any order… I dont feel i can train myself much less the boys.. Any suggestions>?

Please let me know if anything is set up to be on a regular basis with Ryan on Sundays especially….my husband and I had private lessons with him a couple yrs ago and he is awesome instructor. We traveled to Gastonia for it (was a birthday present for me) . The problem we have is that we are in Johnston county and of course there are no classes offered anywhere near here. I am ready for a class to be started locally…

Or better yet, go to a good chiropractor. (one who specializes in athletic conditioning may be better if you can find it) . A doctor will try to pump you with drugs for inflammation, etc but still may not know what the real problem is. They can xray if needed at chiro, and refer you to md if they can not handle it, but I have had pain alleviated instantly in one case after a visit to chiro.

We have been trying to be careful…but we have to do everything in slow motion to be sure we dont strike or knee too hard….so thats not really realistic is it? i mean if we cant practice them fast then its hard to know how effective we will be in a real situation. How do you guys do it in training drills?

Can John (the one that posted about bringing KM to Raleigh ) post again just some general information….like are you a martial art instructor at a Ral. school somewhere? are you getting trained so you can teach it regularly ? Just wanted some kind of idea of what you meant. (If so….Ryan is working on doing a seminar and we need a location if you are willing to provide your school)
    thanks

    Hey
I will comment again here….I am all for bearing arms for personal protection. I have not always been.. In the beginning when my husband started talking about guns and all, I didnt like it when he got the first one. He talked a long time trying to talk me into taking the class to carry concealed. I didnt think I needed it and I didnt want to worry about forgetting it somewhere since I have children. But I can say now that I dont like to go anywhere unprotected now. Dogs are fine for home protection and walking in your neighborhood. But what about when you walk from your car to your house or through the friendly store parking lot (that is really not so friendly the first time something happens.) What about the woman who was taken along with her 11 month old out of the cvs parking lot in broad day light and found dead later (her son was found in a different location alive). The dog is no good at home then. If someone didnt want your money, but wanted to take you to another location and they succeeded, perhaps in their trunk as you said in the other thread….wouldnt it be a little comfort in knowing that you had something to blow them away with when they opened the trunk? Its something to think about anyway…SOmeone said on the other posts that the likelyhood of something happening is low. I disagree. Crime happens all the time. Usually to someone else. The risk is 100% for that person. I used to work in EMS for a long time and never worried about my own safety. I was naive. Some of the houses and situations I walked into voluntarily I would think 3 times about doing now.
When I first started shooting the bigger guns, I was nervous, because the danger is there….but now I enjoy practicing. It was a good decision for me.

One more thing. I didnt see page 2 when I posted . duh. But I agree with Dugfoot about having to be proficient with safety and cleaning the weapon, etc. The concealed carry class is one day and they test shooting abilities, but ongoing practice would be necessary. I know you said you did not have time to learn how to use a gun…but would it be something to consider while you are living there>

Why leave your gun in your apartment.? If you can get a permit to carry concealed you can keep it on you. I am not familiar with virginia gun laws, but in some states you can carry out in the open…most people dont because it may cause a chaos if you are walking around in walmart. yOu know? Its true that concealed carry will not deter someone from seeing you as a target, but you would be able to defend yourself if you had to. But you can get holsters that are easy to hide and comfortable to wear. Much better than trying to carry it in a purse or something. I had considered getting a dog for security. A trained police canine is like $30,000.HA The thing I would be concerned about NOT having a gun is how effective will a baton or flashlight be against multiple attackers like the possibility of that in a gang.?

    Hey-
I am in similar situation. (read the string under \”new here\”) i had same kind of questions….I got alot of great advice on this….one thing if you havent done already, a good investment is the set of 5 dvds that break every technique down into moves that can be practiced over and over. I got mine almost 2 wks ago and have been practicing with my husband. I started by watching the first one (intro) then the second is about the striking techniques(punches, kicks, palm strikes, hammerfist, etc) then the 3rd dvd breaks down moves for defense against choke hold,(different kinds) headlocks, and ALOT more. The fourth and 5th dvds are defense against gun or knife attack. I started watching the gun one, but its too complicated for me at this point. So I am starting with the dvd that teaches the techniques. So each night now we try to practice a couple of moves. Then add one more each night or something similar to that. We dont really have a planned routine , jus t try to practice the ones we learn along with the new ones we try also. Already I feel comfortable with 2 of the choke hold techniques. Check out \”new here\” to see some of the responses I got about workouts, etc

The main towns in my county are Smithfield and Clayton with the most population. The largest city close to me would be Raleigh…still about 50 minutes away. Goldsboro is about 1/2 that distance but not as big as Raleigh . (Ral. in Wake County and Golds. in Wayne County. )..opposite directions.

Are you talking about bringing it to a school that will start teaching itt????
That is good news if thats what you mean!
Ryan is working on getting a seminar together for me in the Raleigh area also and I am going to try to hit all the schools in Johnston County. I know there are some in Smithfield(closer to me) and Clayton ….maybe the instructors will come to the seminar and they will want more!
Thanks for letting me know and please do keep me posted

Thanks for all your advice. We are going to try to get a seminar together and hopefully I can get some schools involved to hopefully spark enough interest that someone will want to start teaching it at their school.
The trial hapkido class i took the other day definitely emphasizes fitness but i am going to wait and try to do the km seminars from time to time. The Bas Rutten workout cds also possibly.
