    Re: gun defense question

I don’t see anything wrong with what Christian was teaching in that Gun defense. It follows the principles of R.C.A.T. (Redirect, Control, Attack, Take away).

The attack looks different from the standard Gun from the Front attack but another Instructor more familiar with higher level gun defenses should speak on this.

    Re: Left Hook Punch

A.J. Draven throws one hell of a hook punch. I remember most about his instruction at my phase was weight transference in the direction of the punch. Once I understood that my partners focus mitt went across the room.

He did not accentuate the pivot/or no pivot but emphasized driving your body behind the punch.

I also remember very recently at a Darren seminar, Darren teaching driving the body forward behind the straight punch and not accentuating the pivot.

I try and emphasize that power is generated in the body and not just from one specific part, ie: arm, feet, etc.

    Just my 2 cents…

    Re: Phase A preperation

It is that important. Epsom Salts, Icy Hot, Ibuprofen every 4 hours, and it is ok to cry as long as no one see’s you and if they do blood better be mixed in. 😉

Re: To Be or Not to Be – Instructor Training

Steve I have to disagree. I taught my wife Palm Heel Strikes and now she takes every opportunity to demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique, every chance she can get. Needless to say it’s made my inside defenses and sometimes the outside defenses a lot better!

Re: Is Rank Important to You?

ummm am I missing something? Where is CJ’s Dad’s post at? I read it once and I couldn’t agree more with him, Jeff and Kirston.

For me it I could care less about rank, about a certificate, about a belt (unless i need one to hold up my pants). For me it is all about growth and knowlege of the system. I am still learning little nuances about level 1 techniques.

I don’t train for status. I train to be better at protecting myself and others. I train to be a better instructor. I don’t go to Phase or test to gain any type of respect. I go to grow. I do it because I have a great responsibilty to the students that believe in us and what we do. I consider myself a failure if can not transfer the knowledge that i have gained in the system to others.

I would rather be a level 1 student for the rest of my life than rush to the next level and not learn anything. It means NOTHING! Rank means nothing if you can apply in stress what you have learned.

I think it’s a joke to see high or higher level students that can’t perform level 1 foundational techniques. That sit on their high and mighty horse and refuse to take a level 1 class just because they feel that they are beyond or above that level.

Sorry for the rant and if I have over steped my bounds oh well. I’ll ask for forgivness later.

    Re: Phase A (aug 15-21)

One of the greatest experiences of my life.

I agree with the above recommendations. Bring first aid stuff, bandages etc. U don’t want a little cut stop you training.
    Imodium – just in case!
Eat, eat, hydrate, hydrate, eat some more. Get some almonds eat them when ever you get a change. Bars, Whole Foods has a great selection!
GO 100% and train safe for you and your partner. Instructors hate injuries. Use your free time to lesson plan. How would you teach techniques, how would you warm the class up for what you are about to teach them, etc…

    HAVE FUN AND ENJOY!

Ask as many questions as you can.

If I think of anything else I’ll add to the list.

Re: What did you do in Krav Maga class today?

As a Student: Theme was Ground Work

    • Worked Situp and Sweep
    • Buck trap and Roll
    • Arm Bars from Guard and Side Mount
    • Worked Defenses to arm bars
    • Then we did free work from the ground with our partners working the above potions
    • Then Worked from Standing to take downs into Ground work
    • Oh And how can I forget my favorite all time combative… HEAD BUTTS!!! :woohoo:
    • Side Note – Instead of working for position and submissions I really wanted to just put a finger in an eye or reaches for the nuts twist and pull but I was a good training partner.

    As an Instructor:
KO Heavy Bag Class: Theme: Multiple Combination’s that include Uppercuts. Lots of Movement! A lot of 15secs on/off, A/B drills with strikes. For Example:
    A – On Bag striking 100% for 15secs
B – Off bag holding Planks
    – I yell switch and well they switch for 2 min.

Level 1: Straight Punch Low, Defense to Low Straight Punch, Front Kick to Groin and Front and Side Ground Stance and Movement
    Warm Up:
    – Jog in Place, Shaking out arms
    – Knee’s High, conti. Jogging in place
    – 10 Push ups, 30 Crunches, 20 Squats
    – Jumping Jacks
    – Moved them into just moving side to side on balls of feet
    – Transitioned to Fighting stances, Shortened the movements
    – Transitioned to moving in Fighting stance
    – Shoulder tag drill from fighting stance

    Partnered up w. tombstone worked straight punch combo’s 1 – 4.
Note: NO ONE WAS MOVING! So I stopped class and asked why no once was moving? Either before they strike (advancing) or after they strike. They corrected and we moved onto…

    Stretching

    – Worked Low Straight Punches
Note: Most remembered to Move in and out circling around after strikes.

    – Defense to Low Straight Punch
Note: Stopped class a couple times to call them out for being too nice and not actually trying TO PUNCH THEIR PARTNER IN THE GUT! No need to defend when their is no attack!.

    – Front Kick to Groin
Note: Had one student kick the tombstone so hard it ripped the handle off. That made me very happy. Progressed to Drill, calling punch combo’s ending every combo with a front kick to the groin.

    -Ground Stances and Movement
After working Dry took the shoulder tag drill where one attacker is trying to tag the should of the person who is down in their ground stance. They soon realized how much it sucks to fight/defend from being on your back.

    GREAT THREAD!

    Re: Any other gun nuts?

I’m just getting into guns… I can see that I’ll be becoming a nut! All I have is a Mossberg Shotgun. Going to a basic training course Thursday for hand guns. Then I plan to go shoot as many as I can to decided which I like best. Looking in the .40 cal range.

I actually might try it. Carpe, I know a few people were wrestling shoes. That’s what i’ve been wearing. Jeff Mount wears them when training too.
