Re: Post operative Achilles tendon issues

Well, looks like another surgery, and another 3 or 4 months on my back during workouts. Dr wants to get a plastic surgeon involved for possible skin grafting.

Re: Post operative Achilles tendon issues

Yeah, he panicked when he saw the MRI after making me wait two weeks to see him again for a diagnosis. All the research I’d done prior to the operation said the same thing: 4-5 days maximum after injury ideal for the operation.
Basically, I feel I’m paying the price for his lack of professionalism in dealing with it.
Even before him, when I went to the emergency room, even the ambulance workers who brought me to the hospital, kept asking me over and over again if I was sure it was the tendon and that maybe I had rolled the ankle.
Just looking at my heel at the time, you could clearly see a HUGE sinkhole where the freakin’ tendon had been. So I’m not sure why so many people in the medical profession had such an issue believing that I had detached the tendon from the bone. My instructors at Ultima had no trouble diagnosing the injury. They knew immediately what had happened.
My doc tends to give me ambiguous answers about how long it will take for the flesh to fill in again. I thought maybe some of you had run across a similar situation.

Re: Recovery time for ruptured Achilles Heel?

Thanks for all the great advice. I guess my doc wasn’t being a worry wart afterall. I’ll keep at the ab and upper body workouts, with no weight lower body workouts, and be very cautious for the first six months or so. Thanks again, guys and gals. But, boy, do I miss the Krav standup drills.

Re: How old are you guys/

Turned 39 a few months back, feel like I’m in pretty good shape these days. Whatever muscle mass I’ve lost from my weight training days certainly has been made up for by speed and agility, thanks to Krav. I can tell a huge difference now when I’m sparring, than, say, a year ago.

    Re: I need a plan…

Plan? Learn the techniques so that you dream them at night, until you wake up throwing blocks and counters. Bust your ass in every class like your life depends on it. Work until you can barely stand upright. Then, when the fight really does happen, and the controlled chaos ensues, your body will retain all that in muscle memory. All you’ll have to do is step back and let your reflexes, your reptile brain, take over. You do that, and you will win the fight.

    Re: My Hiraido update

Seriously…isn’t that the cutest dog in a toupee you’ve ever seen?

    Re: My Hiraido update

Had to finally give up the class. It just wasn’t any fun. The instructor was definitely giving off the “what the hell are you doing in my class” kind of vibe. He wasn’t doing much to help me learn the techniques, but made sure to spend lots of time with all the other guys…who just happened to be around his own age. He didn’t smile. No joking allowed. There just wasn’t any sense of family to the group, at least I never felt it.
And at first I thought maybe it was me being self conscious about my age. But last night I rolled with the Brazilian Jujitsu guys and it was a whole different story. Complete and utter respect, smiles and bows, and a hard workout that didn’t seem like a workout at all. Of course, my body tells me different today. HA! Everyone, from the oldest to the youngest in the class, helped me learn the techniques. Huge contrast in how I felt after just a few classes of Hiraido and how I feel about last night’s BJJ action.
The Hiraido thing was just plain disappointing, though. I went in with the highest expectations and the intention of really trying to learn everything as perfectly as possible. But how the hell can you do that if the instructor, for whatever reason, seems to have already discounted you as a lost cause?
Anyone else ever run into this age discrimination thing in other classes?
I know some of this comes from these guys were MMA hopefuls and I’ve heard they tend to have a sort of cocky attitude vs. other disciplines.

    Re: Keysi Fighting Method

Fair enough. And agreed. If they’re lying about the style’s origins, then they do themselves and their art a disservice.

    Re: Keysi Fighting Method

Just curious, but do you have a hate on for these guys or something? I know you thinik it’s a waste of time, but some of us think learning any style, even something that might not be as effective as some other styles, can lead to a better understanding of the art of self defense and self awareness.

Re: Getting over being glove shy?

Yikes. Guess I’m glad I’m not there anymore. Course, Tucson has its own violence issues, too. Violence or not, I sure do miss the water and trees. BUt even when I was living there, the freakin’ beaches were so crowded with tourists you couldn’t enjoy yourself. Probably even worse now, I suppose.

    Re: Keysi Fighting Method

Of course, I’d have to see more of it to make up my mind that it’s a waste of time. But my thought is that it looked fairly effective in some scenarios, mostly close quarters. Personally, I guess I don’t see anything with all elbow work used in the style. But, then again, I’m kinda partial to them in KM, too.

Almost 13 years ago. I probably wouldn’t even recognize the place anymore. HA!

Hey TBB, I grew up in Jax…well, actually in Yulee, but close enough. How’s the city doing? Still growing in leaps and bounds?

Re: I’m new, and this is why I’m here…

Welcome, Chris. Yes, class can be too fun sometimes. Luckily, we have an instructor who makes sure we never cross the line too often and keep it straight up combat mentality.

    Re: This is becoming disturbing…

That school sounds awful fishy to me.
