quote lions2011:Also if you fight somebody who can grapple you wont have a chance in the world unless you train in some BJJ. Krav wont cut it.How well to you grapple with thumbs in your eyes? Just wondering.

Like I said, have someone help you out with it. I read a book about heart surgery, but I don’t think I’m doing it right…

Train hard enough and long enough, and you’ll see the inside of an ER or three 🙂

Get someone to show you proper wrapping technique. If they are coming off 1/2 way through class, then you are doing something wrong. I’ve trained for hours on end only having to make a few adjustments to the tightness.
Typicaly elbows get “pad-burn” when the elbow is dragged across the pad instead of being recoiled quickly. Ask your instructor to take a close look at your technique to see if this is the case.

I prefer the old-school method of determining rank. When you start, you are given a white belt that you do not wash. The more you train, the dirtier it gets, until it is black.

I wear an UnderArmor skull-cap under my headgear for sparing, otherwise I just spend all class appologizing to my partner 🙂

+1, Kirk. I’m going to add Arnica and/or “Traumeel” cream. Works wonders on those 360-defense bruises 😉
Also, never miss a chance to hydrate and/or snack on some trail mix.
Have fun!December 18, 2009 at 10:30 pm #79375phlegmon27MemberRe: Live fire disarm vid?
@ Coda: I want you to try something that we did a few months back at our school. Have your training partner but on headgear. You put a 16oz glove on your right hand. Perform the KMW defense with the punch your partner’s face. Continue to punch (you can hit pretty hard because of the gear) until he gives up the gun.
Sometimes when we talk about the various weapon defenses, we forget that the KMW techniques tend to add simultaneous combatives to the equation. Once you find a safe way to train them, you really see the difference that those combatives make.
I see your point about control of the wrist possibly being stronger, but I still prefer the simultaneous counters.

@ Jeff: I believe most folks are worried about what is on the other side of the drywall. Spouse, child, innocent neighbor, etc.

With all due respect, the disarm to the live side (driving your neck/shoulder onto the gunman’s wrist) looks VERY dangerous. I, for one, would be very hesitant to give the gunman the back of my neck.
Just my $.02

quote Jeremy Stafford:Bean Bags fill a niche, but not this one. Please reconsider.Jeremy, I appreciate your input and respect your opinion. Unfortunately, it falls into the minority when placed next to the dozens of others that were weighed when making this decision. I solicited input from various LE (local and federal from the DC area) as well as former and active military members. The general feeling was that given all the factors involved(layout of domicile, level of training, use of force laws in VA, other countermeasures in place, ease of use, and willingness to deploy) that this was the way to go. I see all of your points and agree that if some of the factors were different, spray or taser might be a better option.

@ Don: That’s a great point, and part of the reason for the beanbag round in the chamber. I need my wife to be willing to pull the trigger without hesitation. If she “knows” that the first round won’t be fatal (I know that they can be if you catch someone in the right spot or at close range, but she doesn’t) then it will hopefully eliminate the hesitation.
