Re: Worst injuries youve gotten doing Krav Maga

Torn ACL….if you were thinking about doing it too….dont. Staff, I didnt know that you broke it!!! I thought it was a sprain! For those of you who dont know Jeremy Stafford, I gave him his Phase C test. After injuring his ankle, he cursed for a while, got up, and finsihed his test like a champ..He did us proud.

Re: Expert Level Vs. Master Level

Master and Expert levels are terms used in IKMF. If my memory serves me correctlly the breakdown is as follows:

Black Belt Dan 1-5 was Expert 1-5 (they used to wear black belts)
Black Belt Dan 6-10 was Master 1-5 (Master 1-4 was a red and white belt, while Master 10 was a solid red belt (only Imi possessed this, and he never wore it….he only wore a black belt)

Hope this helps…I’m pretty sure it is accurate.

    Re: Another gun defense question

Most likely, the firearm will NOT go off. In order for this to happen, the firing pin must strike the rear of the bullet and striking with the firearm, in any manner, should not cause this. However, there is always a remote possibility that this COULD happen. The larger point is that striking with the handle of the weapon may cause a jam to a semi-automatic firearm as the bullets, as seated in the magazine, may move. Obviously, if the bullets in the magazine jam, then the firearm will not fire at some point. Another reason, and the main in my opinion, is that when you strike with the handle, the muzzle will redirect in some other direction, thus covering other people, or even the defender. Remember the rule, once we are out of the line of fire, we never get back in.

Striking with the barrel of the weapon is good, and is even taught in some techniques (gun from the side, in front of the arm).

So, the main point: if you strike with the firearm, do so only with the muzzle and not the handle.

    Hope this helps.

Re: just in time for the holidays…

I wonder how Kelly got such an undeserved reputation!! 🙂 She NEVER kicks anyone in the groin!

    Re: gun defense question

Jeremy is correct with his description. Here is a YouTube link with Brent Wilkening performing and discussing the technique. IMHO, Brent is one of the best and most talented Krav instructors anywhere.

    Re: Another gear question: Gloves

I used to use Fairtex before there was Revgear. Paul, who owns Revgear (and is a Krav Maga Black Belt, might I add) is constantly improving his gloves after getting input from instructors. The gloves he has on the market now are as good, if not better, than anything else out there. Just my opinion, of course 🙂

    Re: ACL Replacement Surgery

Thanks Emil. The surgeon said that I’d be back to normal stuff (cycling, swimming, etc) in 4 months or so. It is just Krav, running, jogging and anything that places too much stress on the ligament that will take a year. Of course, everything is an estimate, and depending on my condition, dedication to therapy, etc will alter the times. Im sure I’ll be back teaching in less than a year. Thaks for the good words.

    Re: Spazz! Control Thyself!

That situation happens all the time. I actually was on the spaz end myself when I was younger. No, I wasnt a spaz (well maybe a bit), but when I started Krav, I was 10. I was in an adult class and was the only kid. None of the adults wanted to work with me, so I found a friend and got him to sign up. This is the solution to your problem. You need to find someone in your class that you want to train with and exchange numbers. Be in contact and call him or her on training days to find out if they will be there. If not, make sure you know the other people in the class and secure a training partner BEFORE class begins. If you wait until the instructor says “get a partner and a pad,” it’s too late!

The next issue is that of people in the class that are less coordinated than others. Remember, they are still getting something out of the class and deseve to be there too. I have seen many an uncoordinated that all the sudden, one day, just get it and everything falls into place. Give them a chance and while you dont have to work with them, they still will succeed in their own right.

As far as injuries. I agree that it is the instrucors’ responisbility to ensure the safety of the students. Remember, it is not only the uncoordinated that creates injuries, but also the uncontrolled “Stars” in the class as well. The instructor needs to monitor all groups and if things are getting out of hand, intervene. Remember, the reason we train is to be able to handle ourselves on the street in a time of need. If students get injured in class and cant act as a result, then we, as instructors have failed.

    Good luck with your situation.

Ryan is correct. Almost every time a student complains that they are damaging the bottom knuckles (redness between the fingers) it is because the elbow are coming out or up while you are punching. If you hold your arm out in front of you and have your elbow parallel to the ground, you will notice that if you send your fist forward, the lower knuckles will strike the target first. Keep your elbow down/in until you are about to strike the target, then rotate the fist at the very end to 45 degrees. This should fix the problem.

Ill have to check into it further. I dont believe that formal checks are done at the NTC. Usually, before we allow someone to go through instructor training, we know them for a while. Also, those that are sent to us usually come from other schools. It is entirely possible that checks are done on those people, by their respective schools. I have never heard of a background check being done on any of our instructors though. It is possible that I am wrong.

I will check and get back to you all.

In order for someone to commit an act as such mentioned above, they need three things: The desire, the ability and lastly, the opportunity. If any one of these is removed from the equasion, then the act in not able to be commited. As parents, we cannot affect desire or ability, but we can surely affect opportunity.

With that said, it is unfortunate that this has occurred. I fear though, that it is probably not the first time this individual has committed this crime. Just the first time that it was reported and he was caught. There are probably more victims out there.

As far as whether or not he is a Krav instructor, I’m not sure. But we bring all types of people in as instructors. We do not do background checks and even if we did, they would not be perfect. People will always slip through the cracks. It is the same for Law Enforcement. One would like to think that all officers are righteous and have integrity. As a Sergeant who spent 3+ years in Internal Affairs, not all officers are good people. Whether they started bad, or travelled down the slippery path over time is a discussion for another time. As police departments attract people from all walks of life, there will be some bad apples that slip through the cracks. It is unavoidable.

I think the reason that we see the catholic preists, martial arts instructors, and teachers have a higher number of incidents of sex with minors, is that they have greater access to them and have built a trust.

As parents, we must remain aware and do the best that we can to protect our children. We have to do our best to eliminate the \”opportunity.\”

I hope this sheds a little light on the topic.
