Re: Targeting Knee vs. Quad in Roundkick

One combo I really like is a kick round kick to the knee, pushing it inwards and then quickly pull your leg back and follow with a side/stomp kick pushing the knee even further. It would probably be quite hard to pull off under extreme stress but I think it’s potentially very damaging, I accidentally injured a training partner quite badly with this once using it as a follow up to a scooping defence against a low straight punch.

    Re: Total Noob

I started without any MA background and wasn’t in the best shape, loads of people are the same. Krav’s military background means it emphasises getting you to a high level of proficiency and fitness as quickly as possible.

    Re: Long knife/sword defense techniques

For an upward stab there’s a technique I’ve been taught which is for when the stab is very determined or taken from a run up, rather than the standard 360, block and control, it involves performing the the 360 but simultaneously moving to the dead side, so somewhat like the basic straight stab defence. That could be good for someone with a massive knife. For a machete I’m thinking slashing/hacking attacks are going to the main thrust of an attack as opposed to a stab so you’d want to try and close the distance to restrict their ability to generate sufficient kinetic energy as with a stick type weapon and control the arm whilst attacking as brutally as possible. That’s just a guess though.

Re: Help Needed for a Krav Promo

I wouldn’t go for any death metal personally, I like it but a lot of people don’t. Whatever you do though DON’T use the ‘mortal kombat’ theme song OR ‘bodies’ by drowning pool because both those songs have been caned too hard by martial arts videos!

    quote whitedragon101:

The only reason I hadn’t considered this to be the Krav Maga way is my only insight thus far has been from the 5 DVD set of Moni Isaac Commando Krav Maga. In these DVDs all techniques are based on moving and trapping not counter striking.

Just worth mentioning then that CKM is not in any way representative of actual krav maga. If you search the forum you’ll find plenty of info but the jist is that Moni’s someone who’s traded on the krav maga name to sell his own brand of modified judo/jiujitsu, this isn’t a system that is based on krav maga principles nor is it used in any official capacity in the Israeli armed forces.

I train in London, you can arrange private lessons with instructors here certainly, it’d be cheaper if you go in with a friend or two though. Of course regular training is the way to get good but you could probably cover the basic knife defenses in a few lessons to the point where you could practice them with friends. It’s also possible to go on a training trip to Israel regardless of your background in KM, something I’ve been meaning to do for quite a while.

Re: My class has no sparring is Krav still useful?

You should definitely be sparring and I’d go as far as to say if you can’t find a way to make it to the class then it would be worth your time doing another class in thai boxing at a time you can make it just to get the experience.

Re: Training in Israel – too soon?

Those events take people of all abilities so no worries on that front. One guy at class took his girlfriend along to see Israel and she decided to join in training and now comes to class with him.

    Re: Punching bags

I’ve got a wavemaster xxl, it’s pretty good but it does make a fair bit of noise if you hit it hard so if you have neighbours who won’t appreciate it then bare that in mind.

Re: evolving attacks and their defenses

    quote jstrauss:

I don’t want to get into a fight and know how to defend against a bear hug and not a muay thai clinch, whatever that is.

Another thing to bear in mind is that krav is a principle based system. So even if you haven’t yet learnt how to deal with a specific attack in a fight you shouldn’t just freeze up. Instead improvise based upon what you’ve learnt so far.

Re: evolving attacks and their defenses

Yep, in my classes we’ve covered all three of those attacks. Krav has always been evolutionary and forward thinking so dealing with new trends in fighting is a big part of the system.

    Re: Debating on Krav Maga

    quote Leo1:

What are somethings I should know about Krav Maga before learning it? Is there a belt system.. how do I know whether I’m learning on a teaching system that is efficient.

Hi Leo. For KMWW there is a belt system to measure progress

    quote Leo1:

When do I’m ready to defend myself so I don’t have to give in to a simple crime against me?

Really depends on what crime you’re talking about. Krav will start you with the basics and teach you to defend against the simpler and more common forms of attack. As you progress the situations you can deal with will become more difficult and complex.

You’ll probably find muai thai and BJJ a good complement to krav but studying all three at the same time could be tough. I know many instructors that have studied these arts to enhance their overall fighting skills.

Re: Just had my very first sparing against another student, I need tips.

Don’t stress about this in relation to the exam though, there isn’t any sparring involved for P1. Have you got a copy of the syllabus? Check you know everything and focus on performing the technique well, doing strong counters whilst moving off the line and scanning and you should be fine.

    Re: Choke?

    Hi there,

Are you referring to the basic technique where you make a two handed pluck whist kicking or kneeing the groin? If so then you are plucking his hands not grabbing them (it’s quicker and easier). You should be making the defence close to your neck, ideally grabbing at the thumbs. Focus on making it explosive and hard but not pulling the hands too far, you only need to move them a little bit to stop the choke.
