    Re: Avoidings hooks and Jabs

And putting this into a more self defense perspective, what if you aren’t really blocking a punch and the attacker has a weapon you didn’t see. The redirection and outside defense options give you not only a better defense with which to build an effective counterattack, but are also safer when you end up defending a weapon attack. And now we get into the white meat of Krav Maga. Why would I teach two techniques against a similar attack when I can teach one that will work in multiple scenarios.

    Re: Avoidings hooks and Jabs

franco, the technique you show looks like it may be effective for a single strike to the head. The problem I see with the technique is that you have effectively removed any possibility of a quick counter attack for one. Your hands are out of the fight. It seems like you are putting all your chips on the bet that the attacker will break his hand.
Also, you are leaving your body wide open. When I saw you do this, I immediately saw a GIANT red target on your liver saying, KNEE ME HARD. You should expect multiple strikes and you should go for the defense that will give you the most options for counter attack and is the safest. Bas’s techniques are the best I’VE seen and they are very close to what Krav Maga WW teaches for these reasons.

Re: IS this guy teaching Krav?? Help!

It looks alot like what I’ve seen the CKM guys teach. A lot of controlling the weapon limb. Not alot of controlling the weapon.

    Re: Another mouthguard post

Shockdoctor makes really good mouthguards. I use a DNA or Nano gel something like that. Best mouthpiece I’ve ever had and I’ve used tons. I can even talk with it. The absolute best option is to get one custom made. Your dentist should be able to get this for you, but it’ll run you about $70 to $100. There are companies that will do this online for you as well. Just google custom mouthguard.

    Re: Assistance…Anyone??

Hey Joey. I can’t help you with your current situation, but I can tell you that La Quinta on Crestmount Rd in Jessup is probably the best value on hotels there. It’s about a five minute drive from the center, but very clean, inexpensive and the rooms have a fridge. I went through hotwire.com and paid around $60 a night. The Extended Stay is overpriced and kinda dirty, BUT it is walking distance to the school.

Wow. Right straight would have been a better option.

    Re: How can I Improve?

Bas’s workout cd’s and his Big DVD’s of combat are two of the best purchases you will ever make. The value is absolutely incredible.

    Re: Training Under Stress

thanks resqr1. I was reading these posts at work today and couldn’t help but think about how people, especially when they are starting out rely so much on those groin strikes. I think maybe part of the problem is the way it is taught.

everyone needs to understand that the plucks followed by a groin strike is not the technique. the technique is to pluck (Defend) and counter as close to simultaneous as possible and follow up with more strikes to prevent subsequent and possibly worse attack. the defense and counter is what shifts the momentum of the attack temporarily, just enough for the defender to do what is necessary. whether the counter is a groin strike, a right straight, or a headbutt does not matter. you do whatever is appropriate and necessary and you don’t expect that the first strike will finish it for you.

if the initial groin strike has no effect, the elbow number one or two knuckles applied aggressively to the back of the skull via the nose that follow the groin strike will. i have yet to meet or hear of someone who has conditioned his or her face.

    Re: Inside Defense (Newbie Alert)

Only as far enough as is necessary to take the punch off line and allow you to counter effectively. Usually this is right about in front of your face. Not enough and you’ll eat the punch, too much and you’ll open yourself up. The ramp analogy is good. Make your wall or ramp and put it in front of your face as you recognize the attack. Remember to defend with the whole forearm and hand, not just the hand.

You want to avoid pushing the arm down and out of the way. It is absolutely not necessary. Make a nice strong inside defense and your counter will be there. When people start practicing trapping and pushing the arm down, they tend to drop it too much leaving themselves wide open. When I teach the counter, for example in a left right combination or against the right straight, it’s defend and counter. Not defend and hook and counter. Use that defense to set up your counter, not clear the hand.

    Hope this helps.
