Re: Worst injuries youve gotten doing Krav Maga

    quote kvmorl:

Are there any recommended exercises or stretches to help prevent ACL injuries? I haven’t had any but reading all these makes me want to prepare.

general stretching helps, as in the more your leg moves naturally, the less of a chance of something hapenning to cause your ACL to snap.

a knee brace would be a good insurance too, but I dont like training with us, under the theory of “I wont have one in the street”. that said, if i tweak my knee (as I did recently), I will wear one so I can train and mitigate making things worse. (this is for mild knee tweaks mind you)

Re: Worst injuries youve gotten doing Krav Maga

took a viscious kidney shot while sparring, from a guy who is beyong a doubt the hardest puncher in our class (and my best friend since 1st grade to boot)

to this day, it is the only time a single punch dropped me to the ground. it hurt that day, it hurt a little the next day…..oddly enough it was the day after that when I started peeing blood and what felt like battery acid.

That turned into a night in the ER in excruciating pain to say the least. I stayed out of class for about a week, and no sparring for 2 weeks just to be safe. Usualy not a wuss but DAMN that hurt, and I didnt want to go through it again.

I now have a VERY healthy respect for the kidney shot.

—-just to note, the kidney shot was more my fault. he threw a low hook and I turned my back like a frikkin idiot. i was really tired and gassed, and i can pull some real dumb moves when I’m tired and gassed

Re: New Jersey or Philadelphia locations

boucheed, where in Jersey are you going? it’s a small state but wide are when your driving somewhere. There is a couple Krav Maga Federation locations in North Jersey (didnt see North Jersey mentioned, so I figured I’d mention it)
of course, Krav Maga Federation should not be confused with the International Krav Maga Federation…….confused? me too, it’s ok.

**********EDIT********** you said Philly area, i’m an idiot…..LOL

    Re: ikmf or kmw?

    quote OldKravDude:

The main theme of Krav is to be safe. Sprinting across the room to an attacker who has a weapon doesn’t strike me as the safest thing to do…in that drill’s scenario. As I once heard Sam Sade say “I’m not F’ing Superman!!”

valid point, I didnt see where the drill was with the attacker just standing there. to a degree, running across the room to do it seems off, but its not like I’m an expert by any means. I know I’ve done it with the stick attacker running at me, then stepping in to get out of stick’s attack range, but never running at an immobile stick holder.

if he;s juts standing there, maybe wave at him? say “hey dude, nice stick ya got there ” or “is that a stick in your hand, or are you juts glad to see me” LOL

    Re: ikmf or kmw?

    quote OldKravDude:

As far as that drill goes….why would you teach anyone to run into a stick attack? Run the hell away or pick something up to brain the guy with. DO NOT sprint across a room to do your defense! Yes to drills – no to bad training.

running into the attack actually gets you out of the sticks effective range. running away is fine, except if the other guy is faster than you.

granted, if the guy is like 30-40 ft away and you can grab something, then go ahead (so would I) but if he is closer and running at you with a stick or club, turning to run might be the last thing you do (or at least the last thing you’ll do before becoming a drooling head trauma patient.)

actually learned this principal long before I took Krav, so when i learned it in krav, it made a whole lotta sense

(p.s., sorry for the quasi derail, carry on 🙂

    Re: Through A Rapist’s Eyes

a pretty good overview of rape from a pretty knowlegable guy

    http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/rape.html

actually, the info on the whole website about various types of crimes is pretty good.
I just read his book called “Blunders, violence, and Fractured Jaws”, it was one of the best books I ever read.

those interested should give it an eyeball, he has some interesting trains of thought about crime, and more importantly, crime avoidance.

Re: KM Stick defense – instinctive?

I think this is just one of those things you want to train enough to make it instinctive. I’m a little lucky, in the the whole move in close for baseball bat thing was taught to me by a very streetwise daddy, long before Krav.

it did prove itself to be wise advise in practical application sad to say. when I started Krav and I learned stick defense and saw it revolved around moving in close to get out of effective weapon range, it made a whole lot of sense. The instictive part for many others in terms of getting away is a valid point though.

I’m a large guy and not the fastest dude on the planet, therefore backing out fast enough to get out of range that way is not my best option, but thats me. this is an intersting topic though. put me in the “train it over and over until it is instinctive ” camp though

    Re: Keeping BOB quiet…

if bob is on concrete, then some kind of rubber mat underneath will help (1/4 to 1/2 inch). obviously make it considerable wider than the base of the BoB. also, see if there is an air intake vent down there, somethimes sound will travel up the vent to wierd places (especially in a row house). If ther is an intake, close the vent (will be a little lever next to it). that might help as well.

Re: What’s with all the Fuss?

I’l start by saying I’m not a KMWW guy. I do peruse these forums because i never limit places where I look for ideas and discussions that interest me.

now that I got the “disclosure” section of my post behind us, here’s my take

Train where you want to train. If you like your instructor, train with him. if you dont, look for another trainer. My instructor didnt spend a day in the IDF, and he still teaches me very well (not to mention a guy I wouldnt want to trifle with unless I had to, and I am over twice his weight).

this is of course no slight to the IDF guys, as they rank high on the military harcoreometer across the board when it comes to military backrounds.

Cotton, the people on this forum train for there own reasons, and genuinly don’t care about the posts your putting up. I can’t blame them. also note, 4 posts in a row does not equal a faster response…lol

    Re: UFC 79 Nemesis (SPOILER)

I can’t help but think what would have hapenned if Silva’s arms were a wee bit longer. did those haymaker rt hooks from Silva miss due to Lidells skill, or a combination of short arms and pure luck?

either way, commanding win from Silva, and couldnt help but notice that Jackson looked a skosh dissapointed. i think he wanted Wanderlei in a fight down the road.

there are people who live the street life that are no strangers to physical conflict. of course, some are more skilled than others. Make no mistake though, someone who gets into fights alot, win or lose, can give them an “I dont give a crap” approach to a fight that you will want to be wary of. I’m not saying it makes them better or worse fighters per say.

one can argue that you gain more experience losing a fight than if you win it, of course, in the street, losing a fight can mean not surviving it too. This is why i avoid physical confrontation as much as I can, since there is too much of an unknown factor in this day and age.
