Re: Is Krav Maga loosing its reputation?

“self defense and fighting are two different things” Wow, thanks psyops. I now see the light and no longer believe in Krav Maga. I am done.

NOT. It makes perfect sense to be prepared for anything, to know what someone may throw at you. We have knife training, handgun training, etc. to see how these things work even though I don’t intend to shoot or knife anyone. Learning worthless kicks that someone may use against us makes as much sense as learning ground techniques that arent’ self defense – those that a bjj practioner may use against us. I don’t think I’d defend myself with bjj or spin kicks on the street but it makes sense to have those tools in the toolbox. But, I know you’ll come back with something clever so have at it.

Re: Is Krav Maga loosing its reputation?

The current Krav curriculum was pretty much set before MMA became so popular. I don’t believe that MMA influenced anything as far as Krav goes. We teach the slap kicks and spinning kicks mainly because others (the martial arts crowd) may use them against us. By learning them we can read them and figure out how to defend them. At instructor training Krav Worldwide has always taught these by first saying that they are not street self defense and that you don’t want to try to defend yourself with them. The most battle tested self defense system in the world, I gotta think.

    Re: Getting confued

I was about to say the exact same thing, James. One of the absolute key principles of Krav is a simultaneous counter. There is no step before the kick!

Krav does go through changes, it isn’t married to tradition. If something makes us safer or is easier, Krav will make the change. When this happens, it is taught at Krav Maga Worldwide. I would like to know where your instructor is getting his changes.

    Re: This week….9/11

Way cool James! I heard a motivational speaker by the name of Rory Aplanap who has made it a habit since 9/11 to go up to any firefighter, law enforcement or GI that he sees and shake their hand and tell them how appreciated they are.

    Re: Belt Ranks and Testing

If it is a KMWW gym there should only be Yellow, Orange, Blue, Green and Brown belt levels and the curriculum should be the same from one gym to the next.

Re: Military based training, LET’S MAKE A LIST!

Topitbull, your original question has some errors. Haganah is not from Israel, trust me.

    Re: wieght and krav

I like to tell people that weight, disabilities, injuries, age, etc. does not stop you from being a victim of an attack – it may actually increase the odds – so it shouldn’t stop you from training to beat the attacker’s butt. Great advice has already been posted.

I’ve had at least 4 guys at that weight take lessons from us. Just go at your own pace. One of those guys actually tested to level 2 and I really think anyone messing with him would pay the price! Good luck!

    Re: Drinking & Krav

Okay, to answer the actual question that was asked. Not proud of this but four or five years ago myself and another Krav instructor were at a hotel for an official Krav function. One beer turned to eight and in the hall he decides to see if Krav actually works when drunk. I thought it sounded like a great idea. He swings at me, hits an atm machine and busts up his hand. I fall on the ground laughing and end up like a turtle on his back as I couldn’t get back up. Moral for me……don’t get drunk and think that you can defend yourself!

Re: Most challenging Level 1 techniques to teach/Phase A

Hardest to get students to do right is one of the easiest things we teach – inside defense. Watch them, even after showing exactly what is should look like they slap at the punch and get their hand way out of position. Exasperating!

    Re: Hyperextended Shoulder

I can almost tell ya exactly what it is. A partial tear in the rotator cuff. I’ve got one, had it for a long time now. The Ortho tells me that 20% of men my age are probably walking around with one. MRI can tell you for sure. I didn’t get one cuz the doc says there’s no use, there’s nothing else that it could be.

Bad news is that there isn’t a thing they can do for it. Well, they can give you a cortisone shot, but only one or two ever. To operate they make it a complete tear, then you can never do anything like Krav again. It sucks to do but take two weeks off completely. That usually makes it feel a bunch better & I can get another couple of months in before another break is needed.

Main problem is TMB’s. Too Many Birthdays!

Re: The rising popularity of KM…good or bad?

Imi would have been thrilled with this thread’s question. It sounds like in the 80’s Imi wanted very much to have Krav grow and spread. Now these questions come up – it sounds like he did good!

The biggest concern has been addressed. Now that KMWW has lost the rights to the Krav Maga name in the U.S. any yahoo can teach something and call it Krav Maga….and any yahoo can add the name “Krav Maga” to whatever they’ve made up and have instant name recognition. It’s up to us to keep it something that Imi could be proud of.

Re: Self defense/use of force taught in Krav

Hammy, ya gotta keep in mind where Krav came from! I think in Israel it’s perfectly legal to kick lawyers – or whatever this thread was asking.

    Re: uniforms

I think that the reason Krav is so big with adults is that there aren’t any. I don’t even make them wear Krav t-shirts or those damned Krav sweat pants.

    Re: Home work

I second the Bas cd’s. Going over krav tech’s by yourself or, preferably, with a partner is a must but for getting into shape and putting combatives together nothing beats Bas!
