See my post on the bad situation thread.

I think the instructor mentality/personality matters a lot, as would co-ordinating with a therapist.

Women who have been abused/and or raped may not be able to go to a KM class. At my school there have been women who walked out and never come back after seeing what grappeling looked like. Having never been a victim of rape, I figure better to have a big friendly guy I know on top of me for practice now, but for someone who’s been through it, such excercises can trigger BAD PTSD.

Videos are nice, but IMO, useless. I’m an athletic girl, played lacrosse, run, mt bike, lift weights regularly, etc. Point being, I’m not weak in the upper body. But female socialization against violence is SO strong that it took a couple weeks of classes to really be able to throw a punch/elbow with all the force I’m capable of. There is a huge psychological barrier that only real (in class) practice can break through. Maybe in a real situation adrenaline would make a difference, but I doubt it. Just something to consider. FWIW, I do not understand the unwillingness of some women to protect themselves, it annoys the hell out of me.

I’m a 22 yo female, not small, but not large either. I feel somewhat confident, that if attacked by some untrained punk I could make him \”reconsider his choice of victim.\” Don’t underestimate the strength of your survival instinct coupled with some good Krav training.

It’s a little late for treatment now, but this might still help…

ICE, ICE, and more ICE. After Krav or any other workout ace bandage an ice pack to the affected area for 20 or so minutes.

Drugs: If your tummy can handle it, take 600 miligrams of naoproxin sodium (alieve) once a day (with food).

Look up anterior shin splint excercises on the web, they will help strech that area out, rotate the ankle in with a towel and pull-stuff like that.

Unless you’re using Krav to train for some type of MMA event, doesn’t it make more sense to train in whatever is most like street shoes?

My instructor encourages running or cross training shoes (better protection in lateral movement) since that’s the closest thing to a street shoe that won’t mess up the nice floor mats.

We even go out behind the building (asphalt) so the girls can practice a few self defenses in high heels…I must say that wedges are one of the better shoes to be attacked in, less of a weapon than three inch stilletos, but quite stable and very this season. 😀

I vote for cross trainers with the best lateral stability you can find.

Well, the hot bath is making any soreness worse. Yes, it might feel good at the time, but prevents your body from healing because it slows circulation. Most elite athletes get in an ice bath after a long workout to speed up recovery. I use ice baths on occasion, and wear a hat and gloves in the tub to make it more tolerable.

Take a couple advil if it bothers you, and try not to work the same muscle groups two days in a row, it’ll get easier and less painful over time.

mmmmm, clif bar and a banana or orange is my standard M-W-F lunch.

Right now I’m on a carrot cake and almond fudge kick…what’s your favorite?

I’ve seen supersize me, and Morgan Spurlock is just another Micheal Moore wannabe. While it’s a good gross out flick, it’s crap from a scientific perspective.

    Look at
    http://www.truthinfitness.org/projects/mcDonalds/journal.html

I eat mostly organic and whole foods purchased from farmers at the farmers market, no hydrogenated fats, no high fructose corn syrup, usually get at least 7 servings of fruits and veggies a day, etc…but about once a month I have a grilled chicken sandwhich and fries from a fast food joint. It’s all about moderation, I seriously doubt an occasional dose of Wendy’s is going to take any time off my life.[/url]

Not sure what you mean by retzev…

Is this for before class, or just all the time? A lot of it has to do with portions…most things are fine in small portions, but nothing in America is really a single serving.

If this is before class, avoid high fiber, high fat, and high protien. A little peanut butter on a slice of wheat toast and half a banana is one of my favorites for 30-45 minutes before excercise. (About 300 calories, 8 grams of protein, 6 grams of fat, 3 grams of fiber, and LOTS of good carbs)

For right before or during, gatorade or gu are the best bets.

Some people have a probelm with carbonation and a bloated feeling-I wouldn’t do soda before class just in case.

I have learned a ton from more senior students. One fellow student is a military Krav/H2H instructor, when our regular instructor is ill, he fills in. We can choose not to attend, but there’s very little difference in the class. If anything, it’s harder!

Aren’t there three schools in your area anyway?

Lots of fruit or veggies before class can be very bad on the tummy if you get my drift… 😳 Too much fiber for most people.

From and endurance running perspective (check Nancy Clark, RD’s book on my details if you’re so inclined) pre-workout eating is very individual.

For a one hour class I’d go with a little gatorade (8 oz.) 30 minutes before, or a banana (low fiber fruit). If you really can’t eat or drink at all less than two hours out, it’s not going to matter as long as you have a reasonable carb intake (min. 40% of cals) the 24 hours before.

The best recovery fuel, no more than 40 minutes after, is a 4:1 carb to protein ratio. I know bodybuilder types disagree, but check pubmed for lots of medical studies on this subject.

    Jerry,

State law varies on this stuff, shooting someone who poses and immediate and possibly deadly threat to a third party is within the \”defense of others\” clause in Virginia–At least according to a couple lawyers who work in the field. Hell, in texas, it’s legal to shoot in defense of property, which I think is crazy!

Yes that is a bad tactical situation, and people who do not take tactics classes, or regularly hit the range are dumb CCWers. But your attack was a little over the top. I’m not advocating shooting the guy when he sucker punched the idiot on the phone. But had he been kicking the guy while he was on the ground, and no one was behind him, it’s a far less complicated situation. The only issue then is what’s in the parking lot if you don’t hit center mass, and with a guy that big, there’s a lot to hit.

Um, yeah, I would also pull a concealed weapon in that situation. At least by my state law, it’s well within self defense/defense of others to shoot in that situation. My only concern would be that 9mm wouldn’t be enough stopping power with all that blubber.

The victim was on the ground within seconds, the only possible issue with using a firearm was the guy behind them in the corner at one point.

    no female instructors..

I think part of the issue is the school is so small, there were 5 people there last night, and 6 the night before. I’ll avoid him if I can, but we all end up working together pretty quick.

I’ll let it go for another week, if he keeps it up, I’ll say something.

The guy is an inch or so shorter and a good 15 lbs lighter, and he’s not catching on fast, so i’m not too scared of him. His kids take karate there, so i don’t think he wants to burn bridges.

He is saying this stuff to the other new guys who hopefully will ignore him. One of them has worked with me and has a healthy respect for my knees and elbows already. 😆

    that was funny….

What country was it? I’m going with central europe perhaps? It was way to fuzzy to make out words, but it was the Roman alphabet.
