Re: Two weeks in hell
Saw part of it. I think it takes a superhuman to get through. The cold and mud training, the long distance orienteering in the dark in the woods… My hat is off for those guys that can and want to do it.

That’s a good question. We practice with typical plastic (red) knives which are approximately 5″ long (the blade) – 360 defense works pretty good. At home I took a chef’s knife, about 8″ long and estimated how would a #1 360 defense (for overhead strike) work against it. I must say that I am 5’4″, so my arm is not as long as someone’s who is 5’10” or taller. So, in my case the tip of the knife just reaches or almost reaches my face/head (if blocked at the attackers wrist). I 10″ knife would definitely reach, especially if you consider an inch or so of potential “give” on impact.
Even without give, for shorter people attacked with knives with blades 8″ or longer some angles of 360 defense are questionable. Any suggestions/new techniques?October 30, 2009 at 3:14 am #78700skibumMemberRe: Training Under Stress
Kirsten, thanks a lot for the info and for your suggestion (on how to try the suits). I will recommend it to our instructor.

I checked out the High Gear site – it is an excellent equipment for Krav to add realism/stress to training. And it is pricey. I wonder if any civilian Krav outfits use it for stress training?

Those are considered flesh wounds (Monty Python term) – comes with the territory (of Krav Maga), so to speak. Raw neck – every time we practice head grabs from the side or from behind. Bruised forearms from 360 knife defenses. Occasional finger tweak or wrist tweak. Learned to take it in stride. If everyone goes too soft – the element of realism goes away. That being said, I practice with control and would like to expect it from my partners.:):

Blue belt test morning of 9/27. I think I lived through it, just barely though. During review those spinning heel kicks were sharp and high, by the time test rolled around tiredness made them seem much harder to perform and sloppier. Also made a mistake of not pacing myself better. Did fairly well in one-on-one sparring at the very end, but in two-on-one got clobbered pretty good. Interesting to find out if I actually passed.

Mike, where in Haifa is the Krav training place? I visit usually once a year, and would like to see (participate in?) a training session if possible.

Just watched – liked it. Action is pretty fast, hard to tell what style the main character used. The first knife defense (from a stabbing motion) looked similar to Krav, not sure about the follow-up disarm. A few gun disarms looked familiar, but darn too fast to tell exactly! Overall the movie was fast-paced, “in your face” sort of way, but the story is righteous, no PC in the story. The spades are called spades, so to speak. Typical (to the genre) one shot-one kill situations for the good guy, while the bad guys can’t shoot straight. All that being said, the movie made me want to train more and harder – that’s number one. Number two, it made me somewhat paranoid and aware.

Don, I see. The logic seems similar to walking instead of sitting down after a hard run, so the muscles have a chance to recover a bit and stay pliant later.
As far as getting clocked in the jaw while talking during sparring – I am not an instructor yet, so it is not an immediate danger for me now. I am just trying to survive when bigger guys using their long range fists from safe distance… :box:January 21, 2009 at 2:50 am #72691skibumMemberRe: Mouthguard for small faces
Thank you both Don and Kirsten. I will try ShockDoctor youth size.
Don, how will having chewing gum in my gear bag help? Am I missing a joke?:Surprised:

Very intense, pleasure to watch. La Rev – you are aggressive, resourceful. 1st match was a classic. Overall – great effort, congrats. Sounds like you have good attitude and know what to work on. Best of luck in future tournaments.

Gene, I had the same symptoms in the beginning before body became used to the physical load and stress. It still happens occasionally after an exceptionally strenuous workout. There were many good advices about relaxation/calming down by kravists above. My $0.02 is try not to eat too much even if you are ravenous. Make sure you are hydrated enough during and after the workout. You can try some of those recovery drinks – they are filling and restore muscle nutrients lost during exertion and/or an energy bar (I like CliffBar). In any event, don’t stuff yourself – it is not conducive to falling asleep at night (I speak for myself here).

Glad to hear you enjoyed it, Gene. Last night was a hard class, but not the hardest by a long shot. As you get used to the workout you will be able to get through this type of excercise easily. BTW, you BJJ training will fit in very nicely with KM – 80% of groundwork is BJJ-based.
