Re: Why so much strange kicks in higher levels.

    quote lions2011:

I like your basic Thai kick to leg, push kick and groin kick.

Why does the level 2-3 focus on so many bizarre kicks like side kick, back kick, slap kick, etc…

Far easier to use back elbow or hammer fist for side or back attacks.

No one ever complained that they had too many tools with which to defend themselves. There is a time and a place for everything. Sure, there will be more times I use a “basic” strike. That’s why they are the foundation. And I don’t really think of side or back kicks as “bizarre.” I don’t like the slap kick for much, but I’ve sure had them used against me with good results.

If I remember your earlier posts, you are a yellow belt? So by the time you are learning the more advanced, spinning, etc kicks, you will likely see the usefullness, even if you continue to favor the “basics” like I do.

Re: Gun Defense against multiple attackers

    quote Don:

You do what you feel is best in order for you to survive the situation.

Bingo. I feel pretty confident with my handgun disarms. If I felt attempting one presented the best chance of surviving an encounter, I would use one. When confronted with TWO attackers, at close range, I have to say the vast majority of times I would comply up until the point where I felt compliance becomes LESS likely to allow me to survive (get on your knees, get in the car are two likely scenarios).
Against two attackers committed to doing you harm, each with a handgun, I think all but the most advanced (and probably even them) practitioners would admit that you have entered the realm of low percentage techniques. I’d love to hear what some of our blackbelts have to say about that.
If I had to give a “best guess, most of the time…if I had to try it” answer, I would try to combine a disarm with getting the now disarmed person between me and the other attacker, while readying the weapon. Like I said….pretty chancy stuff. But that’s a pretty bad scenario.

Re: Any jewish students in your class

I know that a decent number of our more senior students are jewish. I am, (blue belt) and at least five of the brown belts are as well. I think that makes the majority of the brown belts, actually. We do live in an area with a higher percentage of Jews in the population than most of the country, though.

Re: Best way to recover from injury?

    quote BradM:

Sometimes the obvious response is the best answer. There’s nothing “candy ass” about letting an injury heal.

Bingo. I got thrown (poorly) about three years ago, and injured my shoulder. I never rested it, and let it get “good enough” then went back to training hard. Never got compekltely better. Then, I was forced to take time off for other reasons. And you know what? Now I can train harder and better, knowing that going full force won’t screw me up. Wish I had just let it heal when it happened.

Nothing “candy ass” about taking care of the only body you’ve got.

    quote CJs Dad:

wheres the “like” button? LOL good job!

Thanks! The “like” button is about two inches behind my solar plexus. It is apparently most easily pressed with a knee. Seriously, though, I do like those “like” buttons on forums.

Re: Blue best test on Saturday…whew

Thanks! The iron-mans during sparring were different than anything else I’d done. Instead of 2 minutes, 30 seconds off, then a fresh partner, it was 2 minutes, NO rest, and another person came in for some 2 on 1 with one of the 2 being fresh. Then in another two minutes, another fresh person came in for 3 on one, the last guy in was the instructor. We went until he called time. I think it was about an hour (in reality, it was probably another 2 minutes.)

    congrats, man!

Thanks! It was a bear. My instructor texted me this mornig to see how I was feeling after the test. I responded that it was a nice warm up and I went home and worked out. I have a feeling I’ll be paying for that tomorrow night!!

    Hi there,

I train in Canton. Feel free to PM me with any questions about the school. I’m a student, no an instructor, but will be happy to share what I know.

    Re: Weird Punching Techniques

Um, I’m no expert, but this 10 Dan also has kicking techniques that were not exactly what I expected.

    Re: I need cardio help.

I don’t know you or your condition/experience, so what I am about to say could be 1000% wrong. If so, ignore me.

When I started, my cardio sucked. But what made it even worse, WAY worse, was sparring or rolling, when I REALLY lost control of my breath, I held my breath, I panicked, I did all the things you’re not supposed to do to maximise in/out of oxygen. next time you spar, especially against someone who might be faster than you, but isn’t going to hurt you too bad if/when they hit you, is just focus on moving and breathing. Keep your breath smooth and controlled. yes, you’ll get hit, especially at first, but then you can start picking it up again, keeping your breath in control, and working harder, and harder….

Now, if that’s not it, and you just have no cardio….interval training. I think I did permanant damage to my lungs smoking for 15 years, not sure, never actually asked a Dr. about it further than a chest x-ray that came back clean of the big-C. BUT…for the amount of cardio I do, I should ahve better wind than I do. Interval training has gotten me to the point where I can push myself almost as hard as I wish I could, and my recovery times have gotten way better.

    Re: Nose or jaw?

    quote XOEK:

do you in all honestly think you’d be at all concerned about aiming you punch that precisely in a real life confrontation? .

Yes. I’ve been in fights. Just because target is small or precise, doesn’t mean I shouldn’t aim for it. I don’t want to hit him “in or about the head area” if I can help it. There are some unpleasant areas of the head to hit. I’m not saying I’ll delay one milisecond. When I punch, if I have the openening at either, where should I send my hand? If the openeing is clearly only there for the neck, the neck it is. If it is only there for the jaw due to his hand position, that’s where I’ll go. I train my hands so I have these options. I train so that I don’t HAVE to be concerned about aiming.

    quote XOEK:

pop him and use the opening to go for like an armbar takedown, then as he falls, back away and run. he doesn’t have to be knocked out he just has to take the time to get up before giving chase for you to put some distance between you.

I can not disagree with you more. If a situation has gotten bad enough for me to throw a punch, I am certainly not going to “pop him,” take him down and run away. I am going to eliminate the threat. if he is unconcious after that one punch (i’m not exactly a power puncher, but it could happen with a well placed shot), it is eliminated. If he is still fighting, I am going to continue striking until I am safe enough to remove myself from the situation. If he bends over, I am going to knee him until he stops moving, if he hits the gound still fighting, I’m going to stomp him, or soccer kick him until I am no longer in danger of being harmed. I don’t want to do any undue harm to him…I just want to eliminate the threat. I am not a self-denfense expert, nor am I a criminal lawyer, but I will not keep myself or my family in danger for one second more than neccesary.

Sorry, feel kinda strongly on this point. I’ve seen someone do “just enough” and then get hit in the back of the skull with a metal folding chair.

    Re: Nervous New Krav Student

Oh man, do I remember that! I remember being so nervous in my first stress drill that I basically stopped hitting back. Some of the guys wouldn’t let that happen, and talked me in to a frenzy. I knew my punches and kicks weren’t great, but it was the atittude that we were working at the moment. Afterwords, I dfelt great!

As for the knife disarms, if yo uare in a smaller school where they don’t break up all the calsses (mine doesn’t always), you will learn advanced techniques, even early on. it can be a little frustrating, when you don’t even know the 360 yet! But like you’ve heard, focus on the form, get that down, and the rest will follow. In a few months, believe me, somone with your size, strengh, and obvious attitude of wanting to improve is going to be a great early practitioner, and probably an AWESOME partner.

Good luck, keep it up, and remember EVERYONE in that room…EVERY SINGLE PERSON, even that cut-up marine was new at it at some point. He went to boot camp, the instructor walked in to Phase A, and every beginner there remembers VERY well what you are feeling (well maybe not the part of also being bigger, but I digress).

    keep us posted!!
