Re: Value of CDT as a complement to KM?

As I haven’t personaly heard Tom bash Krav or vice verse, I can’t comment on the “he said/she said” dynamic, so it’s best if I stay out of that exchange as I only like to comment on things I know.

Regarding the original posters question, and the personalities not withstanding, as someone with 1st hand knowledge and training in multiple “compliance and control” systems due to my day job (PPCT, CDT, KOGA, Controlled FORCE, etc) and a Krav Maga Instructor, I have found that CDT offers many viable options for its intended applications. Nothing more or less

    Hope it helps,

Re: Value of CDT as a complement to KM?

    Fight SV,

    Welcome to the board.

CDT is a viable less then lethal force option that one can add to their defensive tactics tool box if they choose to. Even though CJ’s Dad may disagree, not every altercation needs to end with a “jumping, spinning, whipping, dragon groin kick of death” ;).

Seriously though not every scenario needs the same level of physical force, CDT offers the student an additional “tool in the box”, like Thai boxing, Jiu-Jitsu, Escrima, etc, thatís all, no secret touch of death techniques or one touch knockouts. CDT is also one of the few less then lethal force systems that is upfront about that fact. Just like every scenario should not end with a groin kick, not every scenario should/can end with a control tactic or compliance technique. Higher levels of force are required as well and thatís where Krav comes in.

Control/compliance systems (no mater what the system CDT, KOGA, PPCT, Controlled Force, etc, etc) all require a degree of complex motor skill development vs. Krav’s emphasis on initial gross motor skill responses. If those types of techniques donít appeal to you or you feel it will be counterproductive to your Krav training then donít take the seminar and focus on filling your Krav toolbox instead. Thatís the beauty of free choice :).

    Hope it helps,

Since the UFC owns WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting) I dont think they’ll mind the comments ;). WEC has had some excellent matches since joing the Versus (VS) network. They can be seen every Wed night for Free. Alot like UFC Unleashed.

So to cover the MMA/Thai Boxing TV Schedule each week, we have.

IFL Battleground (Mon + Sat Night) Channel (My TV)
Bodog Fights (Tuesday + Sat Nights) Channel (Ion)
Fight Girls (Tuesday Nights) Channel (Oxygen)
WEC Wrekage and Tapout (Wed Nights) Channel (Vs)
Ultimate Fighter (Thursday Nights) Channel (Spike TV)
IFL Season Fights (Friday Nights) Channel (Fox Sports Net)

    Various Times….

    UFC Unleashed (Spike)
    UFC (Ultimate Fight Nights)
    WEC Live Shows (Vs)
    WCL (Vs)
    Elite XC (Showtime)

The book covers all material \”up to\” Black Belt, i.e., through Brown Belt. All the gun, knife and stick defenses are covered.

    Re:

    quote \”Giant Killer\:

Jackson’s punch didn’t appear to come right on top of Liddell’s, there was maybe a split second before he threw it,
    Giantkiller

My point exactly…if Chuck followed up to the head in that \”split second\”…. Jackson couldn’t have thrown the punch or if he did, he might have been the one to get caught, not Chuck….

To help drive the point home this taken from ESPN.Com…

    —————————

\”Jackson didn’t have time to establish the jab that played out so effectively for him in the light heavyweights’ first clash in Tokyo. But the new champion didn’t need a stiff lead hand when Liddell hastily went to the body.

\”He saw an opening and he took it,\” said Liddell’s chief trainer John Hackleman, who four years ago ended The Iceman’s night against Jackson when he threw in the towel 13 minutes into the brawl. \”The risk highly outweighed the benefit of that technique and he paid the price.\”

Going to the body without a combination in front of it or a punch after opened the Iceman to a counter attack from his younger, faster opponent, said his trainer.

\”I was doing my thing,\” said Jackson, who with the technical knockout at 1:53 of the first round raised his record to 27-6-0. \”The right hand landed right on the jaw, right where I planned for it to go, and it was destiny.\”
    ——————————

Again the basics…no matter who you are.

The year of the upset….lessons learned. Always remember the BASICS…no matter how good you are…

Chuck made a basic mistake….NEVER end at the body. Body/Head….Body/Head… otherwise you leave yourself wide open. If Chuck would have followed that left hook to the body up with a Left Hook or Right cross to the head, Jackson would have been defending that shot versus throwing the right hook that dropped Chuck.

GSP made a basic mistake…. always cover the \”entire side\” of your head/back of your head when you Roll/Block the hook/kick so you dont get caught on the back of your head by the punch or the foot. GSP just brought his hand up to cover his temple and jaw and missed the hook that Serra threw which caught the side/back of his head, he never recovered after that shot.

Cro Cop made a basic mistake…..dont ALWAYS circle in the same direction and certainly dont circle close into someone’s power hand/leg and oh yeah by the way dont drop your hands to block a high kick.

    Again the basics.

As a Krav Maga Instructor and a Coach with Tony Blauer, I can probably help clarify Tony’s quote that was used, and its right along the lines of John’s initial response. Tony’s uses that quote to highlight the fact that a sparring session is very different from a street attack, where both parties are aware, prepared and consent to the fight. Thats all, Tony has no problem with sparring and like John recognizes it’s value when utilized appropriately in ones training progression and development.

With that said, to say sparring has \”NO\” value in improving someone’s ability to defend themselves is just absolutely foolish.

I recently completed training another round at the NTC in July and saw Marni at the center while I was there, obviously she was in the middle of treatment and fighting a tremendous battle, but there she was running a meeting with the staff like nothing was wrong.

Her unwavering dedication to Krav Maga, her courage and her fighting spirit not only on the training floor, but in the face of her final battle will forever be etched in my memory.

It is with a heavy heart that those of us from the Santa Clara Krav Maga Team offer our heartfelt condolences, thoughts and prayers to the Levine family, the staff and students at the NTC and the Krav Community as a whole as we are truly better because of her efforts and less without……

    Pride does not equal Yakuza

\”The Proof – Sakakibara said that if he or the company were involved in organised crime or affiliated with the Yakuza, there would be no press conference at all and he himself would already be in jail. \”

So the head of Pride says they are not affiliated with the Yakuza and thats considered proof…..hmmmm, thats not proof where I come from? But maybe thats just me….How many times did Goti say he wasnt in the Mob again??? Come on now ;).

I’m sure Fuji TV dropped a money maker like Pride for no reason?

IF they are affiliated with the Yakuza or not, they lost their contract with Fuji over it, no debating that fact.
