Re: Why Krav?
As soon as my daughter was old enough I signed her up for karate lessons. Figured since my new life as a parent meant there would be no time for me, I would just live my past through her. LBM (life before marrage) I had spent many years in martial arts, well, didn’t take but a couple of months watching this tiny little girl learning round kicks and straight punches, that I had the itch… NO not that kind of itch! I Joined Krav and several months later moved her into KMX.
Funny went from no time for me cause of kids to its all about Krav and training, just integrated the family into it. Now when I drive past the center my 3 y/o says “KraW Maga” and with LAM (you figure that one out) I have lots more free time and no one complaining at home.

February 29, 2008 at 11:48 pm #62869craig-pMemberRe: Fighting is Fighting
In class today we did a drill where 5 attacked 1, some call this “the ring of fire”. Two tombstone pads, 1 kick shield (for knees) and 2 attacking with lvl 1 chokes or take downs. All 5 aggressed the defender nonstop, with force and the pad holders where pushing hard to throw the defender off balance. Scenario training doesn’t get much more real than this folks!
It’s one thing to defend 1 attacker over and over in class but when a nonstop flurry is on you and as soon as you defend, someone else is in your face or at your knees trying to take you down you start to understand what can really happen in the streets. You can’t quit, you can’t rest and you can’t call time out. Your only option is to fight for your life!
After what felt like 10 minutes (lol.. it was probably 3) and many chokes, knees, punches and takes down attempts I finally got picked up from the side, lifted way high in the air before being dropped on my back and mounted. Almost immediately after working my way back to my feet I was being taken down again. I almost sprawled out of it but my luck it was Junior… ack… he got my ankle, stayed tight to me and I was again on my back. I must have 50 lbs on Junior but by this point I was gassed and could not breath, For a moment I just lied there but quickly realized that he wasn’t smiling and letting me up. Back in the fight again on my feet and more punches… then the most beautiful word I ever heard… TIME! whew!
Sorry for the play by play but my point is that there is more than 1 way to spar. For applying what we are learning, this is the Krav Maga way!

If crowded classes are getting to you and your schedule allows for it try taking a morning or noontime class. Usually we have fewer than 10 students in lvl 1. Everyone is focused and trains hard so they can leave quickly to get back to work/school or whatever.

Talk about a shot to the liver… ouch dude! But the concept still holds true, simply scare the boy to impotence and all is well.

quote Miriam:p.s. I enjoyed meeting your girls today… they are SO adorable! Have you and Jarret discussed arranged marriages with his boys yet?Heres my concern about thatÖ
Although my girls are still young, I have been working on my pre-date speech that the little punk boys who wanna date my girls are gunna receive from me. Initially I was going to sit with them and share an orange or something and cut it with a meat cleaver as we discussed what they would do on their date with my daughters (ok stole that from the Cosby show). Recently Iíve been thinking it might be cool to simply share some U-Tube videos of Krav Maga while wearing my instructorís shirt, discussing how easy it is to cause great pain too, well, I dunno for exampleÖ a young person who may wanna touch my daughter the wrong way. :dunno:
Here is the problem. A) Itís probably their father in the video. B) By then they will have been training with their father for many years and will giggle at the video. C) How the hell do I get pissed of at the kids father and confront him, knowingÖ wellÖ did I mention who was in the video? :OhMy:January 28, 2008 at 6:11 am #61116craig-pMemberRe: Gun Advice??
quote Miriam:Lucky – or unlucky for me, depending on how you see it – is that the configuration of my apt is one, long rectangle with the living room at the front and my bedroom all the way in the back. While there are two doors to my place (front and a side one off the laundry/service porch area), there’s only one way into my bedroom, which is down a long hallway. Off of the hallway, there are three other rooms. Therefore, if I heard something and thought I had an intruder, I sure as heck wouldn’t institute any kind of sweep and shoot inspection, since the person could leap out from any of the other rooms. I’d just call 911 and wait… and if I end up getting a gun, I’d have it loaded and aimed the door. I don’t believe there is a serious danger of being surprised by someone breaking in through the windows in my bedroom. They are glass loeuvers (those old things from the 50s or 60s that tilt open and closed). While they may be easier to get into in terms of being able to force them open, actually getting IN beyond that would require either sliding a number of the panes out or breaking them to create enough space to fit a body through. It couldn’t be done silently, and if I was home, I’d hear ’em coming. As would my 2 guard and attack cats.Hmmm…. almost feel like I can navigate my way through your apt already. Would those guard cats be domesticated or on loan from SF Zoo?

Holy crap Batman.. um Raneman… thats crazy! Good for you staying so calm and keeping your composure.
Perfectly illustrates that allthough this may never happen to many of us we must always train with the mindset that it can and will.

December 20, 2007 at 11:13 pm #59408craig-pMemberRe: Tactical Decisions
Several months ago I was the victim of some postal workers ( he was in his own car, but in uniform) road rage. He yelled and threatened me but I thought the situation was over and ignored him. He actually followed me like 3 blocks, after I parked and got out of my car he pulled up next to me. Believe me, I felt threatened at this point, but I remained very calm and tried to talk to him… until he opened his car door. For me, the door openening was kinda like that aggression switch we have discussed in other threads, I lunged into his car and proceded to subdue him by introducing his face to his steering wheel and getting his left arm in a sort of elbow joint lock, the whole time I was loudly exclaiming that he was scaring me and that I felt very threatened by him. Hehe ok maybe I was saying some profanities too! It was kinda funny that I was somehow aware of the appearance to witnesses, as CJ’s dad made reference to. That was about the extent of the situation.
I did call the police dept to file a complaint as I really did feel he was going to attack me. The officer made it clear that if they had been on scene I would have been arrested. He went on to say that it is very unfortunate that the innocent have to be physically attacked before they can defend themselves. From my experience, perception of danger does not give you the right to be the aggressor.
With all that said, had I done nothing he may have gotten out of his car and shot me or worse beat me up (making all my training look bad). In my opinion, I did the right thing.
