    Re: Krav survival stories

This KM student, while not in my KM class, is a KM student in my area. She was robbed at gunpoint. Here’s a link to the news story.

Re: 360 defense vs overhead stab, wrapping vs control of stabbing hand

I agree..I sometimes find it easier to get the knife arm wrapped. You can really put a world of hurt on someone’s shoulder or elbow with little effort. Perhaps, it is because of my past MA experience; not sure. I’ve seen the technique I’m specifically done in KM, but I don’t know what it is called in Krav.

Also, I agree that the disarm isn’t the only thing to worry about. Some people get so focused on the weapon, that they forget about everything else (other options, vulnerabilities, proper technique, etc…).

    Good post

    Re: Some Newb Questions.

Great advice so far…I just want to reinforce what has already been said. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! Drink fluids (water, gatorade, etc…) throughout the day, not just during class.

    1.Pace yourself
    2. Don’t compare yourself to others in the class, everybody had to start somewhere, their fitness levels didn’t happen overnight
    3. Don’t get discouraged
    4. Have fun!

    Good luck!

    Re: Weapons, Concealed and Otherwise

    Voodoo,

Thank you for your apology. Now, that is water under the bridge. You touched on a very sensitive subject here in the U.S. There has always been a very bitter debate here in the U.S. on gun laws, especially handguns…Currently there is a case heading to our Supreme Court that may have a large impact on gun laws across the U.S. Without boring you with our internal political and constitutional disputes, I’ll say that there are a lot of very passionate people on both sides of the argument. While there are a considerable amount of people that own guns in the U.S. (mostly hunting guns), the majority of households are without guns.

As in your country, most Americans will go through their lives without having been attacked, mugged, etc…But, there is an alarming number of incidents across the U.S. We’ve seen that violence can happen at anytime for any number of reasons or no reason at all. It’s not just the bars and bad neighborhoods anymore. So, people do what they think will make them safer.

    Re: Weapons, Concealed and Otherwise

Voodoo, if you had read all the posts you’d see that there was a diverse response. Some people arm themselves, others do not. I don’t carry any weapons myself. I assume you train in KM? If so, is that a sad indictment on Australia because you feel the need to arm yourself with self-defense training? No, I don’t think it is. The fact is, we live in a dangerous world. Some people choose to arm themselves with weapons or by training in self-defense. The likelyhood that we will ever have to use either is small, but we’re prepared. I’m not happy with crime rates in the U.S., but Australia isn’t immune to thugs and violence either. I lived outside the U.S. for years. I saw just as much, if not more, violence in the so called civilized and peaceful societies than I see in the U.S. There was gun violence, but mostly knife and blunt object attacks. No one insulted you or your country, so why would you do that here? Your comment didn’t add any value to the discussion. All you did was insult people who never insulted you.

    Re: Newbie to Krav Maga

I know someone else on here can probably answer this better than I, but here’s my 2 cents for what it’s worth. I’m not familiar with Mr. Seid or Frontline. But, a certification to teach under Frontline would not transfer to KMWW or the IKMF (Both tracking their lineages to Imi). FYI – Beware Moni Azik and his Combat Krav Maga. He has some questionable claims.

Now, to the crux of the matter. I think it would be prudent to ask him where he trained, for how long and who gave him his authorization to teach. If he’s on the up and up, he shouldn’t mind providing that info. I would go so far as to ask him to produce credentials.

As you probably know, in traditional martial arts, it is customary to understand a teacher’s lineage and history. So, I see no difference in seeking the same from him. In today’s age, it easy to become a self-made Master of anything. So, caution is needed. After all, you’re going to put considerable time and money into your training, especially if you want to teach. Any reputable KM program is going to be tough and the intructor certification process is going to be down right brutal, from what I’ve seen. So, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

I’ve been training in martial arts for years, but just recently started KM in the KMWW organization. I had to conduct research, weed through the political mess and talk to people to make an informed choice. But, the homework has paid off and I found a reputable school that I enjoy and that thoroughly kicks my arse. I too want to teach one day. It will be a long road with a lot of blood and sweat, but it’ll be worth it in the end.
Good luck and don’t give up!

    Re: Motivating Story

She’s amazing. You’re right… those guys that are just “getting through” are cheating themselves. God forbid they ever need their training in a real life situation. Survival is as much about heart and perserverance in a highly stressful encounter as it is about technique.

Re: What did you do in Krav Maga class today?

Last night: usual warm up and break falls
rear knife to the throat defense and third person knife defense scenarios…Great class!

Re: First Krav class at ATA….

That’s pretty pricey, especially for only 2 days a week. I agree with one of the other posts. Be more concerned with the staff than the students. There’ll be people of all fitness levels, more so in the beginner classes. At the end of the day, do what you’re doing..trust your gut feeling about a place. Any good organization is going to have some instructors that slipped through the cracks or they water down the teaching to get and keep as many fools as they can to sign their contracts. It’s a problem all styles have.

The system is very effective, but it is only as good as the individual instructor and the effort you put forth. I’m glad you take your training seriously, since KM isn’t a sport, it’s about survival.

I’ll post any links I find, if they might help you out. But, I cannot personally vouch for a specific school in your area. Hopefully, someone else can help you out there. Good luck!
