    Re: Winter Camp 2010!

Jesse it was great to meet you guys at Winter Camp! Thank you to all who attended, it was a fantastic weekend of training!
There were 145 people training at the camp, and I have to say a special thanks to our instructors and volunteers, especially the guys in the fist suits and our stick attackers. They got their arsses beat for hours!

Thanks again everyone, I met so many great people from around the country, I hope to be able to train with all of you again soon!

Re: Are we being true to the system?

It should be noted that when a news crew or tv journal crew comes in to shoot a story on you and what you do, the only control you have is over what YOU say on camera. They will shoot hours of footage for 30 seconds of video, and edit and comment in whatever manner THEY believe will produce the best feedback from their viewers and advertisers, not on what accurately portrays the subject matter. Your only other option is to turn them away, wherein they will go to the nearest competitor and do the same story about self defense using a different system.

We’ve had lots of experience with this, as have many quality KM schools nationwide have. We’ve been mortified and horrified when we see the final product during airing, but I for one take solice in knowing that if it inspires even 1 person to contact us, I assure you they will see, feel, hear, and learn Krav Maga at it’s best. In fact, they may not even join our school, becuase it’s not what they expected from the broadcast.

    Re: Mexico shooting video

It’s a good thing Mexico has strict gun control laws, or that guy may have had a semi auto instead of a revolver. (sarcasm, for those who don’t know me)
Prayers for the cop and the hero. I say hero because even though he died in the process, he did occupy the gunman long enough for others to escape, and force him to spend time reloading.

    Re: christmas terror attack attempt

Yes AviatorDave the pilot has that authority, but in a world where our Seals are charged with assault because a frickin full blown terrorist mastermind got a fat lip, and where our cops have to consider every possible lawsuit before, during, and after they defend themselves, and our soldiers cannot conduct war but are instead asked to be cops….Do you think a Pilot would really risk an ACLU and CAIR lawsuit as well as possibly being fired from his airline for racial intollerence after pressure from those organizations? The Airline itself would be sued as well, then settle out of court for a few million $, which would immediately fund the next attack on the very same Airline.
This, I’m afraid, is the world we now live in…and it’s tremendously insane.

    Re: christmas terror attack attempt

I agree with the whole ‘dead terrorist is easier to subdue’ theory. If striking angles seem difficult (almost a certainty if they are seated and you’re standing) then consider ripping at the eyes, ears, and nose. A human can take alot of elbows to the top of the head, but will “usually” instintively try to protect the major senses, thereby possibly opening up a better KO angle while simultaniously keeping their attention occupied on other than the trigger.

Regardless of what your physical response is, bark out loud clear and concise commands for others to help you and what you want them to do. Most will flee, some will step up, but they need to know what to do in context of what you are doing. Nothing worse than someone pulling outward on the same arm you are trying to put your weight onto to control a weapon or trigger. Be assertive, take control. Some one has to.

    Re: Live fire disarm vid?

Speaking from a great deal of experience, and much of it very recent, I can tell you that when someone is actively trying to ‘screw you’ in the handgun defense your chances are far, far better when you redirect and control the handgun itself as opposed to at the wrist. For the most part Ryan already touched on why (wrist diameter, defensive leverage, line of fire control, etc.). However, there is another reason seldom visited….When holding the wrist the gunman pulls back hard, his wrist moves with ALL his intent and purpose. But when holding the gun and he pulls back hard, the GUN is subject to his grip strength and the angle of his pull. There is also ZERO counter leverage that can be employed against your hold when you have the gun, as opposed to when you have their wrist, where the gunman’s hand AND the gun itself becomes a lever for retention. As Ryan said, look at how easy wrist releases are. TEST IT! find someone with small wrists who are not quite as strong as you, and ask them to go all out to release the wrist hold. you’ll likely find that they’ll releases the hold sooner than later. Try it again with a gun and you holding the muzzle, see what happens. And by all means, post your findings here.

That’s a lot of words that basically describe this: There are no moving points to be used as leverage against you in a muzzle grab that are beyond your hold. There are at least TWO moving points that can be used as leverage beyond your hold in a wrist grab.

Maybe I’m just old, but under a lot of stress with very active resistance (more than you might normally encounter), wrist re-direction and controls were effective about 75 percent of the time, where muzzle grabs were effective to maintain control close to 100 percent of the time, from my perspective.

Re: Stick defences on the ground?

If you’re mounted, there wont be much chance that baseball type swing will happen with any blunt object with reach. Also, your reaction time will be seriously shortened, so you should choose 1 defense to default to. For me, it’s the re-directing defenses, overhead or off angle, it’ll be obvious which one. Trap and roll even if you get the wrong arm…the most important thing is that you eliminate space between you.

If you’re on your back and the attacker is standing, you’re going to get punished slowly on your arms, mid section, and legs if you rely on kicking. One thing on your side is the nature of the weapon in the attackers hands tends to cause them to give you ‘slightly’ more space. Consider getting at least halfway up (to one knee) on your right side (with right handed attacker) while ready to make overhead defense with your left arm from that position. Then burst FORWARD while getting up, not back as usual.

Re: Basic Strikes not fast enough the Krav way?

Pivoting is a teaching tool for punching, not really a part of the technique. The rotation should be in your shoulders and hips, and hip rotation needs a turn or bend in the knee to get range of motion. Some people have trouble with this in the beginning, hence teaching the ‘pivot’ in the beginning. Later, the pivot should happen as an incidental by-product of this rotation if it happens at all. Trying to make it happen for the punch actually takes away from the punch since it’s difficult or impossible to pivot while simultaneously pushing forward on the same foot.

Re: Colorado Winter Camp 2010 – Minimum Proficiency?

There is no minimum proficiency requirement for the Colorado Krav Maga Winter Camp. All techniques needed, even the advanced ones, will be taught and drilled on first before moving on. It’s a blast! I hope you can make it!

    Re: Shock Knives

The model we have has a layer of insulator outside of the contacts that help with the sweat issue, but they still short out when very wet. Just shake them out for a second and they’re good to go.

They actually work BETTER through a layer of clothing than they do on bear skin. Quite a bit I might add.

    Re: KM Weaknesses?

There are two topics here, one is on mindset and training and the other is on technique.
I want to comment on technique and in particular the plucking defense. The pluck is do-able for almost everyone with enough training, but the rotational defense is a more effective defense in the end. Here’s the catch: The plucking movement is far more instinctive, so it happens first under most circumstances. I base that statement from years of very early KM experience with very talented martial artists seeing Krav Maga for the first time. Many, many of them had GREAT choke defenses from their own styles, but once we put them under EXTREME STRESS guess what? 95% of the time the hands went FIRST to the choke (as in plucking motion), then they executed their styles defense. So what’s faster under stress? What’s easier to learn initially with minimal training? If the pluck fails, go to the rotational defense, or whatever works for you. No big deal. But one part of what makes Krav Maga unique is its ability to turn instinctive movements into a usable defense, and at THAT it’s an amazing system. But it’s not infallible.

I agree with Kirsten on several points; FIRST I don’t care if you’re a 110 pound civi or LEO, train like your life depends on it. The difference isn’t in the uni, the title, or the badge… it’s in the training, mindset, and experience.
Second, Iíve seen 90 pound women make the pluck defense against 230 pound men, but only after enough training. The pluck is easy, but at that level of disadvantage, don’t expect it to work without lots of practice on many finer points.

Re: Is this guy a fraud?

Hello Alberto! It’s great of you to come on this forum. Please don’t take offense to the subject, but some people who have been training and teaching Imi’s Krav Maga for a long time now are worried about quality control, and for good reason (look at Commando Krav Maga to make my point)

Italy is rather a long trip, but we have an Instructor here that has family there and just returned, so on his next trip I will try to set somthing up. If you are ever in the US, please look me up!
