Re: Defense vs the big right hand

    quote Marc1000:

Ryan: Thank you for the explanation of the head movement. It makes sense to move inside the “eye of the storm.”

jaspthecat: In the beginners Krav Maga book, it mentions that the extended defense is almost always preferred over the tight cover when defending the hook. Is the cover a better option if you aren’t sure if your oppponent is throwing a hook or a cross and your hands are up?

    Marc

Thankfully, I’ve only ever had to use the technique in sparring so I’m not going to come over all internet ninja and tell you it’s the only way.

My experience is that if you have your hand to your temples in a guard position, then moving your elbow up is going to be quicker than extending an arm to block.

However, as Ryan pointed out, in Krav, an arm out block is the preferred option, so that’s probably the best method to learn. I was just offering an alternative view.

Nice work – looks very professional with the edits & various angles. Congrats!

Gotta love the use of classical music in the soundtrack! :):

I would like to say that I had a hand in it, but sadly I didn’t.

The guy who put it together studied Film Production or something similar at Uni, so I will pass on the +ve feedback.

Re: Defense vs the big right hand

Depends where my hands were, but lets just say that they are in a tight ‘boxing’ type guard.

In this case I would raise the elbow to protect the chin at the same time my forearm will be protecting my temple and my hand just behind my ear.

If I was in a stand off and I saw a big looping right coming, then you can beat the 360 defence as stated above.

Just thought I would circle back and post what was produced in the end.

    Thanks all for the advice.

    Re: 2 handed punch

We used a 2 handed strike in Xing Yi Quan, although the strike was with he heel of the palm as opposed to knuckles.

The majority of the power (as with most XYQ) came from the momentum of the body and the strike was often accompanied by a forward step. If you got it ‘right’ it had a lot of power and I have seen people launched back quite a few feet when subjected to good technique.

It’s generallly a chest level strike / shove so would be good for encouraging people to ‘back off’ if being attacked. I guess you could aim for the chin and if you got it right could cause some damage……

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Good Mouth Guard

I use the Shock Doctor ultra and am happy with it.

I’ve decided to go custom though as I want something that is tailor made for me and I would prefer to spend a bit more money and retain my winning smile.

    Re: home defense weapons

    quote paul:

dont they even have a manual on how to tackle an intruder:dunno:

The advice seems to be let them get on with it.

There is of course the notion of reasonable force but the term reasonable seems to act far more for the criminal than it does the victim.

    Re: home defense weapons

LOL, all this talk of guns for home defence.

In the UK, we would prosecuted if we tickled an intruder with a feather, nevermind blow his head off…..

    Re: BBE Punchman

I’m sure that they are fine but just bear in mind that you need plenty of room around the bag to work unless of course you are just going to mainly practice punching drills.

    Re: Gloves for small hands

I don’t know of any manufacturers that specifically make a small fitting in boxing gloves but some brands will have a different fit over others.

If you having an issue with wraps, buy some gel undergloves as they take seconds to put on and being thick have the added benefit that they will fill out the glove if your hands are a bit small.

Your instructor should advise you on what type of gloves but my personal opinion is that for sparring where you are trying to emphasise particular krav techniques, then MMA gloves are great. I have a pair of Fairtex and they rock (they can also be bought in small sizes). There isn’t much padding for full contact sparring though, so I wear 16ox boxing gloves for that purpose.

You can get MMA gloves for sparring (ie they offer a bit more padding) but I don’t know too much about these so wont speculate.

    Re: Stance Drills?

Getting yourself out of a stance mindset is difficult.

    I did 2 things:

Use the lines on the floor to act as a reference point for where your feet should be.

Ask my training partner to pick up on my error each time it was apparent.

    Took time but worked.

Re: Help Needed for a Krav Promo

Thanks for the advice, I especially like the idea of two approaches thanks Kirsten.

The idea of death metal was said tongue in cheek, but thanks for the concern 🙂

Re: Help Needed for a Krav Promo

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Good idea about including women in the promo, we probably only have 2 female regulars in our club which is a shame as the benefits of Krav to females is great.

What we are thinking so far is depicting scenarios of ‘common’ assaults. One shoot will be of the poor victim getting a pasting and the other shoot will be identical with the only difference now being that the ‘victim’ is a ‘Kravaneer’ and takes out his assailants before making a rapid escape.

We will probably do a few ‘action’ shots in the club as well, show a bit of sparring and someone going full tilt on a kick shield. All filmed of course at jaunty angles.

Not quite decided on the music as yet. How about a bit of Death Metal?
