Never, ever heard of that. Some instructors at my place wear shorts, others wear workout pants.

Embarrassing. No wonder Krav isn’t taken seriously on those boards.

    Modern Arnis

All this talk about Kali has me intrigued, so I did a search for a place near me that teaches the method. I found a site that mentioned Kali, but it turned out to be a place that offers \”Modern Arnis.\”

Are these similar systems? If so, is one better than the other? Just curious.

    Thanks!

    Cyco,

Thanks for the clarification. Makes sense to me.

    Cyco,

You describe a palm strike as a ‘step down’ from a closed fist strike. I assume you’re talking about a ‘slap’ rather than a palm heel strike? I’ve always heard — and it feels this way when I hit a pad or bag — that a palm heel strike, properly executed, can be even more damaging than a closed fist strike.

Perhaps I’m wrong, though. I’ve never actually struck a real, live human head with a palm heel strike.

    Any clarification would be cool.

    Thanks!

    Law and Order

There was also a brief reference to Krav Maga in an episode of Law and Order. A little girl was doing (very bad, Tae Bo-style) knees and kicks on the playground, and said, \”It’s Krav Maga — it’s what they teach special force commandos.\”

Then her playmates were shot dead by a sniper.

No gun defenses were demonstrated, and the girl’s fall break was terrible.

    Oh, well.

As much as I regret entering the discussion about DMA a few months back — it was bad form for me to name names — I must say I’m so glad that Coretactix is thriving in Columbus.

I’m pretty much a rank beginner — barely passed my L2 test — and I’m currently about six months into recovery from a knee injury, but I know enough to say for sure that Jon and Denise and the others at Coretactix are the real deal. They’re great teachers and great athletes, and are clearly all-around great people.

I think about my training with those guys all of the time, and I can’t wait to get back into getting my butt kicked by them on a regular basis. I’d recommend that facility without reservation.

Very sad. And sobering. While it’s not clear whether Lee has experience with weapons defenses, it’s exceedingly clear that he was a man who ‘knows how to take care of himself.’

Be careful out there, tough guys.

I, for one, must say in retrospect that I regret answering the question originally posted on the thread. I responded out of frustration, which is rarely a good idea.

I don’t disagree with the content of my post, but perhaps this context is inappropriate.

John W, please feel free to delete my comments.

BTW, I never hide on boards. My name, well, it’s pretty easy to figure out.

Well, you know those runners. They’re complete animals.

The Krav guys, well, we’re just pussycats!

    CLFMak,

Very interesting. Thanks for your input. I think I may have misunderstood some of the stuff on the site.

It sounds interesting. I may try to pick it up.

    Chguise,

Denise (formerly of Dublin Martial Arts) not only COULD kick my ass, she did on a regular basis, in conditioning terms.

Sure, there are some big apes in my class who could probably outmuscle her, but I would much rather take instruction from her than from them.

Not exactly on topic, but responds to your question about females.

As a guy, I have NO problem learning from a woman. Maybe if I was actually skilled enough to take her, I’d start feeling cocky, but that’s not likely to happen in this lifetime for me.

I agree that the rhetoric should be carefully examined to determine whether it adds to or detracts from our understanding of the Krav community and the system itself.

That having been said, I think that the original question \”What happened to the Krav program in x community\” is valid, as are the answers offered.

I look forward to moving on to other subjects.

The attackproof.com was actually the most interesting to me of the three. I’m sure I can search the web and find plenty of people with opinions about this method, but I’d be most interested in hearing from people on this list.

I noticed a lot of differences from Krav forms and training technique. Biggest for me? The emphasis on taking the fight to the ground, and the ‘lots of strikes in quick succession.’

I’m not sure how practical it is for most people to learn the breakdancing-type kicks in the groundfighting videos — looks to me like a great way to get hurt badly if you’re not on a training mat — but then again, I’ve always been relatively weak on the ground.

I do, however, think that the contact/freestyle/slapping drills could be helpful. I’ve always found Muay Thai-style sparring to be frustrating, ’cause I think in a real fight, I’d be much more likely to just spaz and unleash everything, eye-gouges and all.

I dunno. I’m certainly no expert. A just-barely-level-two Krav guy. But I’d love to have the opportunity to try out some of these other RBSD systems. Which brings me to another point: is there any benefit to going to one of these two day seminars? It takes me weeks to incorporate new basics in Krav. I guess I feel like I’d learn something just well enough to do it wrong. With no instructor to help me along, I’m afraid I’d be wasting my time.

    Jeff,

Thanks for your insight. The slo-mo makes some sense to me. Systema seems to focus a bunch on it.
