Re: Triathlon and KM
Thanks for the reply and the link. The specific one I’m doing is called the Aluminum Man over here in The Dalles, OR. That isn’t until September so I have time to train smart and get the miles in. I’ll probably do another one early summer as well as long as there was time to recover and then train harder for the September race. It’s my first time doing anything like this so this first year will be a learning experience.
I agree about the injury thoughts wrecking my race plans so honestly I will most likely taper off and just focus on the triatholon training early spring.

You’ll love it. Well since I’m posting late I guess I should say….I bet you loved it.

I’d answer that question with a no based on my experience and the fact that I’ve seen people doing them for years. However that assumes proper technique and no other issues.

Thanks again for the replies. They are very helpful. One thing I did do was find the one guy in town that specilizes in orthepedic surgery for athletes. Not that I’m some stellar athlete but above average and I wanted someone that would hopefully understand what my goals are for recovery. Second opinions are never a bad thing though.

Thanks for the info. I’ll ask those questions.

Where are you in WA? I’m here to with no place to train.
First focus is to stay in shape doing something. Personally I do a mix of the Bas CD’s, circuit training with weights, and the Insanity workout videos. That will keep you ready for training and light on your feet. Plus when you do train hard with an instructor you won’t be as prone to injury.
If I had people here asking me to work out with them I’d jump on it. That would be fun. Just tell them you want to train but not be held as an instructor.

Great post. I think some of the comparisons made with KM and other ‘systems’ is really not an apples to apples comparison.
Sometimes I think the only way to prove it would be to throw a bunch of well trained KM guys into the most dangerous place (terrorists, rapist, other psycho idiots looking to kill you) on earth along side a bunch of MMA guys. I think the body count in the end would tell the story. Now in defense of MMA take that same situation and throw some KM folks into the cage with MMA guys and the results would be different unless there were no rules and the KM people got nasty with techniques that would get an MMA fighter banned for life. It’s all about what you look to get out of it.
I’m not a professional or amateur fighter…..just a dude working in an office that want to protect himself and family if the need arises. Even if that mean kicking someone in the groin and getting everyone the heck out of there.

Now I’ll be serious. I am thankful to say I have never had to use anything I’ve learned in real life. Granted being a bank manager doesn’t lead to a very violent day job. However I also think sometimes people who carry themselves with confidence from being fit and trained just don’t get messed with. Maybe that has helped. Who knows….in the perfect world I’ll never have to use it but if I did I like to think the attacking guy is in for a surprise.

Yes….everyday when my kids attack me when I come home from work.

We had a fight class after the regular KM class and this is where sparring happened. It was open to me starting day one because I had some experience sparring in the past. Full gear and about 50% power depending on who you were working with. Never had a black eye but I’m sure that would have happened eventually.
February 8, 2011 at 3:59 pm #81422mikejdmMemberRe: Do you cross train
I think cross training is a good thing as long as you don’t go to overboard and start doing a bunch of things poorly versus a few things well. I had that happen for a bit. Exposed myself to a lot which was good but I wasn’t really taking the time to perfect anything.

Take the time going easy on it and let it heal. Then do some specific exercises to strengthen the area to avoid another issue.
Do it right because you don’t only want to heal the physical issue but you want to put your mind at ease as well. Mentally you don’t want to be thinking you might hurt your wrist again and hold back on anything.

Yes just call the instructor and set up a time to meet them and discuss how they run their program. I’m sure they would be most willing to help you get started.

I use his CD’s as well. I just substitute different combinations and don’t always follow his instructions. If he says “4” I might do hook, knee, elbow, upercut….who knows. Then next time he says that same number I make sure I don’t duplicate what I did last time unless I did it so poorly I need to try again. I could go on and on about ideas but this type of thing has worked for me. After a few years I pretty much have the CD’s memorized.

Good thoughts and thanks. Validates from others some of the things that are in my head. .
