Re: Is Krav Maga similar to Jeet Kune Do?

Kevin, could you give some examples of Aikido influenced moves in KM? Just curious.

Re: How/where to learn Arabic besides RosettaStone?

To start, you could go to a local bookstore (or search the internet) and get an instructional book with audio tapes or cds. Cheaper than Rosetta Stone, but similar. They will have individual lessons, start out easy, explain the word structure, grammar etc. Audio tapes are important, as you will need to learn the pronunciation.

Once you’ve learned your first couple of phrases, try to have a conversation in your mind, using the words and word structure you’ve just learned. Maybe even think about something that’s happening in your own day, have a dictionary handy and look up any words you don’t know. Always think in the language you are trying to learn, don’t translate too much. That makes it easier to start feeling the flow of the language.

Being able to build those first couple of phrases in your new language is a great experience, but then comes the bummer: Grammar rules. 🙁

Lots of dry stuff to study and memorize. That’s when a lot of people quit. You just have to stick with it. Think about everyday stuff again, using your new language, new tenses and brand new phrases and the dictionary.

Once you are able to speak okay, try to read simple books in your new language. Children’s books are easiest to start. Then more comprehensive ones. Newspapers as well. If you can’t get those, look for Arabic language websites.

Also listen to television/radio to improve your skills. News shows are easiest to understand, as the anchors speak very clearly. If there is no Arabic tv/radio channel in your area, go to youtube and google some Arabic language videos. It doesn’t matter what they are about, the main thing is to hear the spoken language. Then try to think about whatever you’ve just heard in that video using your new language. Voice your opinion on the subject in your mind, using that language.

These are all great exercises. Music is another thing that can help. If you can find some Arabic music with lyrics that you like, you can listen to it and learn a lot of new words memorizing the lyrics. Don’t worry, there is pop, rap, rock everywhere, not just traditional stuff! 🙂

Finally, if you can find someone to talk to who actually knows the language, that would help as well. Just try to have a conversation with that person and always have that dictionary handy. If that person knows English, even better, then he/she can give you instant translations.

Learning a new language isn’t easy, but you can do so on your own if you are determined and just stick with it. Maybe try one lesson a day, no matter what. Think in Arabic when you are walking to the store etc, even while doing Krav Maga. And don’t let the grammar portion scare you off!

    Good luck!

Can anyone tell me what happened? Was he sick, or was it an accident? He was so young, it’s shocking to hear. Rest in peace! 🙁

Rhon Mizrachi is not part of KMWW, but with another organization, the KMF (Krav Maga Federation). You can google their website and they have a forum as well. Good luck!

Re: Want to see how quickly a knife can kill you?

Did some googling. Looks like “Three Stroke Productions” is a clothing firm started by an Italian neo-nazi, who has since sold it, but whoever owns the company now has shops in certain areas of Spain that cater to neo-nazis and sell fascist merchandise. Only fascists are wearing clothes bearing that symbol, that’s why the rather innocent-looking logo gave the attacker away. Here is a link to pictures and a story about shops that were vandalized and covered in graffiti in protest about ten months after the victim had died:

    http://www.lahaine.org/index.php?p=32784

If you google “Three Stroke Productions”, you can also find links to the clothes, which are also sold in London. The logo looks perfectly ordinary and without knowing the background one wouldn’t think they’d be associated with neo-nazis. So, careful what you buy, I guess!

“Antisistema” seems to just generally refer to anti-government groups, extreme left or extreme right.

The victim has since become a symbol for all victims of neo-nazi violence.

Re: Want to see how quickly a knife can kill you?

I’m not familiar with “Three Stroke” either, but it may be an extreme right-wing organization known in Spain. One would have to google it to find out more. They also mention that the victim and some of the supporters were “antisistema”, apparently another kind of movement with an opposite ideology than “Three Stroke”, but I haven’t heard of them before either. The attacker was also Spanish military.

The article says that the stab entered the ventricle of the heart and was thus fatal. The victim might have lived for a few minutes, as some of the bystanders on the platform were said to have been trying to save his life.

The victim was 16 and the attacker 23. I don’t think they knew each other, but it appears the attacker was taking a train into the wrong neighborhood, wearing a provocative shirt, looking for trouble, ready to stab the first person who would confront him.

Later, he uses the knife to threaten or stab anyone who tries to get close to him, that’s why some of the people who are trying to enter the train and detain him ultimately back off, but then others appear to try again. One other person was stabbed in the shoulder, there is a detailed shot of that also (but hard to make out, it’s all so chaotic and fast).

Re: Want to see how quickly a knife can kill you?

Here’s a link to the original story, published on the “El Pais” website (Spain’s largest newspaper):

    http://www.elpais.com/articulo/espana/Punalada/mortal/metro/Madrid/elpepunac/20090510elpepinac_9/Tes

It’s in Spanish and there are two videos, one the long version and one that shows only the attack. Apparently, the attacker is a right-wing, anti-foreigner extremist who is using the subway to travel into a mostly immigrant area of town. He is wearing a T-shirt that identifies him as an extremist, with the words “Three Stroke”. So he might have been looking for trouble. He pulls out the knife as the train pulls into the station.

A group of young men get into the subway car and one recognizes the words “Three Stroke” on his sweatshirt and confronts him over it and gets stabbed and pushed out of the subway car.

After that, it’s chaos. The friends of the stabbing victim try to save his life on the platform, others simply get out of the subway car and the attacker gets trapped inside, surrounded by friends and supporters of the victim, who are on the platform. Some of them try to get back into the car from the outside and adjacent subway cars (where there are more people), to detain him. Another person gets stabbed by the attacker in the process.

Then, one supporter of the victim throws a fire extinguisher into the subway car where the attacker is trapped and it explodes, allowing the attacker to get out in the confusion (and under the cover of the smoke it produces). They all run after him.

In the end, he was caught and is now serving a 29 year sentence, 17 for killing the first person and 12 for attempted murder of the second victim.

Knowing this, the video suddenly makes a lot more sense. It’s all in sequence and if the subway car is sometimes empty and sometimes it isn’t, it’s probably because of people trying to get to the attacker from adjacent cars, while he is fighting them off. The whole thing is edited footage from about eight different cameras.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Krav Maga: How to Defend Yourself Against Physical Attack

I know some people have a problem with the first book, basically for the same reasons and I can understand their concerns, as putting Imi’s name on the book implies that he actually wrote and approved the final version, which was put together after his death.

But that’s really the same argument for both books. I’m not sure why one would see a problem only with the second one, but not with the first as well? Or is it because Eyal is publishing the second one on his own, while Darren collaborated on the English language version of the first?

Re: Krav Maga: How to Defend Yourself Against Physical Attack

Hmmm, technically one could make the same objection to the first book, which was published three years after Imi’s death, but is often referred to as “Imi’s book”. If the fact that that one was published after his death doesn’t generally bother people, I don’t know why it would suddenly be a problem for the second one. I suppose both were based on material Imi had written over the years, but were put into their final book form by others. Either way, it should be an interesting read.

    Re: Domestic Violence

As for some general advice, I agree with everyone here that HE is the problem, not Krav Maga. Doesn’t take much for an angry, stronger man to hurt a smaller woman. Just grabbing her, slamming her head into something hard (like a wall), or using simple punches, maybe a choke, or hitting her with an object lying around the house. He doesn’t need to be a martial arts expert to do any of that.

Maybe the question is not should HE be practicing more Krav Maga, but whether YOU should. If you decide to stay with him, you better know how to defend yourself, just in case.

Okay, I copied the picture descriptions Psyops posted into the “Image” search of AOL. Up came several pictures of a cute Japanese lady in little girl’s clothes and a waitress outfit.

    I suppose that wasn’t it… rofl2

    Re: KM Level 1 class

What was that guillotine choke/backwards roll during choke defenses (done by the defender)? I’ve never seen that. Did the student make that up on the spot, or was that taught by the instructor?
