Re: Coming back from elbow injury?
Hi Ron, & welcome aboard (from a fellow n00b)! :D:
I’ve gotta say, what you’re describing is one thing that makes me distinctly nervous, since I’m only a few short years behind you. I’ve been training in KM for about 2.5 years now, & (thankfully) the only real injury I’ve sustained so far was during ground-fighting. My opponent was supposed to lift his leg over & around my head – he (apparently) didn’t have that much flexibility in his hips, & instead nailed me with a heel-hook to the back of the skull. :(: I didn’t get upset at him, I knew it wasn’t intentional – but it still just JACKED UP my spine all the way down to between my shoulder blades… If memory serves, it took a good 6-8 weeks to get back to “normal”…
I’ve said all of that to say that I don’t have a “fail-safe” solution to the questions you’ve posed, but I am looking into ways to minimize the risks and/or address the issue. I’m currently reading Martial Arts After 40
which seems to have some decent info on this subject, esp. pp 177 – 206. I’m also giving serious thought to this book depending on the reviews that I see for it.For your specific situation, there are two things that come immediately to mind – to avoid having this happen again it might be worthwhile for you to select one or two classmates that you can trust, & work only with them for the short- to medium-term future when performing knife defenses. Let them know that this has been a drill that’s resulted in injury to you, & perhaps ask that they work more slowly during this drill.
The other thought that I had is that (after you’ve recovered from all of the injuries you’ve sustained) you consider training your arms with light weights during your off-days, building up to medium weights, etc. The thought here is that if you can slowly build the strength in those ligaments, it should provide you with a bit more “capacity” to go through the training without suffering a setback.
It should (of course) go without saying that I don’t know your situation/condition/etc., I am NOT a medical professional, YMMV, “do this at your own risk”, yadda yadda, yadda – but these are suggestions that have worked well for others, & my hope is that they’re at least thought-provoking for you, and (ideally) helpful/useful.

Not tonight, but last night, we did ground-fighting. Defense against someone in mount or guard position while we were on our backs. Finished the session by defending against an aggressor in mount who’s holding a gun to our head. Good stuff. 😎

Thanks Kevin – my wife’s been asking me to teach her a little bit of the basic stuff I’ve learned* and this should be helpful. And I’m sure that I’m not the only one that appreciates your efforts here. thumbsup
* (which is nice, since I’ve been trying to get her into KM since I’ve started!) :D:

quote SplatCat:I’ve always had a lot of respect for Muay Thai, so I actually dropped a few bucks for a used copy of this DVD set, in large part so that I could compare the way that KM approaches things with the way that Muay Thai approaches them (seems fairly comparable so far…):http://www.amazon.com/Muay-Thai-Master-Saekson-DVD/dp/B00066N9Y2/
Aside from Muay Thai, I remember seeing a video where this short little fat Russian dude was doing some RIDICULOUS, CRAZY, SILLY-A$$ED defenses with these “floppy” little half-a$$ed punches against various attacks, but somehow, it all seemed to work…! I was pretty skeptical, but I’ve gotta admit, it made an impression on me, so I looked into it a little further. Turns out, it’s an actual style, albeit a really “niche” or “fringe” style. The video is here…

And ever since then, I’ve gotta admit, I’ve been REALLY intrigued by the Russian ‘Systema’ art. I’d LOVE to find a weekend seminar that I could check out, just to see for myself if it has any validity… :dunno:
Another quick video link, this one from Black Belt magazine – for whatever that’s worth…

Like I’ve said – I honestly don’t know if Systema has any real validity to it – but MAN, I am really intrigued by it!!

Oh – and since the ACTUAL title of this thread is “What marital art would you like to learn?” – errrr… Whatever “marital art” is useful for keeping my wife from griping at me…!! :D:
(Sorry – I’ve been told that I was a smart-@$$ even as a kid, & by now I’ve LONG since given up any hope that I’d grow out of it…) ;):

quote KevinMack:Try to utilize your time by making your exercises KM specific. At the end of most of my classes I always show my students something they can do at home in order to practice what I just taught. It may not be the whole technique but rather the specific body mechanic that makes it work. You can mix those in with body weight/mobility exercises to make it a good workout as well. That’s a great idea – I’m a bit jealous of your students now… ;):
quote KevinMack:I think I might shoot a short “solo drills for Krav Maga” video.Would LOVE to see that. thumbsup

:combat:Welcome aboard MH! :D: It is indeed “fun stuff”, & all the better because it’s immensely practical. I hope you’ve been checking out some of the other forums, etc., there’s some good info here. On a personal note, the wife & I get down to AZ occasionally, Flagstaff is a beautiful, neat little town! thumbsup Glad to have you here.

quote KMyoshi:We train for these types of circumstances regularly but these types of situations are not something you’d like to find yourself in. A good technique that comes to mind is called “stacking” which is putting one attacker/assailant between you and other attackers. This makes it more difficult for the others to attack you simultaneously.Yeah, same here. I’ve definitely improved my skill in that regard, but always figured that it’s one thing I don’t want to experience in a real situation…

Otto –
Thank you!! That’s outstanding info! You’ve given me a bit to think on/learn about, and possibly even helped a number of people. :woohoo: I’m going to look into/learn about what you’ve posted, then (in all likelihood) pass the info along to the people in question.
Thanks again! thumbsup

Wow. Looks to me like the Bulgarian politician was thinking “Is this a joke?” or “What’s going on?” in that first second. He’s probably lucky to be alive – although what happened there goes along with what I read here:
https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/ccm-columns/features/criminals-and-the-guns-they-carry/
The would-be assassin was a pretty big boy too – the politician would almost certainly be dead if he’d used one of his knives instead of that little mouse-gun! I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that he never even test-fired the gun to be sure that it worked.
January 19, 2013 at 2:46 am #86630splatcatMemberRe: Krav related exercises?
Hmm. I don’t know how long you’ve been training, but 45 seconds isn’t particularly shabby (if that’s sustained, near-continuous punching). I remember reading not too long ago that fighting is more of an anaerobic activity than aerobic, & that fighting well is impacted more by whether or not you’ve had a good breakfast than whether or not you can run a marathon. To a large extent, that made sense to me, since you’re utilizing the energy stored in your muscles. Experimenting with diet might be a good “first step” in that process.
I’ve also tried to ensure that I take a bit of a B-vitamin complex & CoQ10 supplements on nights before I train (because both are supposed to help you get the maximum energy from the food you eat), but I honestly don’t know if it’s provided much benefit to me beyond what I get in my everyday diet. Worst case, I’m creating expensive urine… :dunno:
Good luck!

While it’s not specific to to Krav, I just today received the video below. It’s gotten pretty good reviews on Amazon (& I had a gift card), so I thought I’d give it a try. Haven’t viewed it yet, but I’ll post a review once I do.

Ah geez, that’s only slightly obvious… :banghead: I guess I’ve always thought in terms of defending a woman, NOT in terms of defending against a woman… (Which could be a hell of a blind spot, come to think of it…)
Thanks for opening my eyes a little bit mara_jade…
