Sometimes you can use your own clothes as a weapon as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ezekiel_choke

quote KMMAN:Yea, that is some list Metta. Can you tell me what lineage K Security Federation might fall under (Alain Cohen)?I will begin my research on the others.
Just looking for the history of it all. Thanks!
There’s a thread about Alain Cohen over here: https://kravmaga.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2819
Looks like he got a first or second degree black belt from a legit org and then awarded himself a 9th degree  and went off on his own.

This is a copy of a post I made in another thread (about the Darren Levine handgun seminar earlier this year).

I wear wraps (these ones: http://www.ringside.com/ringside/contender-fight-sports-mexican-style-handwraps.html) particularly at the start of level 1 classes when there’s a lot of punching on pads. For sparring I keep those on and slip on some 16oz Ringside brand boxing gloves that appear to have been discontinued. I also make a point to occasionally train punches without the wraps, because that’s what I’d have in a real situation, but the support and protection they provide is nice.

I don’t really know what you can do to fix this. But, I can point out that I try to partner with people bigger and stronger than me and then do my turn partnering with people smaller and weaker than me (this often includes the female students at my school). For the purposes of realistic training you really need to work the techniques against people that you can’t just muscle around.

If you don’t mind ordering hundreds of them at a time, you can have them custom made for ~$2 ea. http://www.pinpros.com/Custom-Lapel-Pins
I’d even buy one off you, but I guess there could be trademark issues that would get that kind of operation shut down if you use the logo.August 3, 2012 at 12:44 am #85673stuartfMemberRe: Stabbing in Hollywood

I think it’s critical for learning things like timing, seeing openings, and finding out what techniques actually work.
July 11, 2012 at 5:26 pm #85416stuartfMemberRe: Choke from behind with pull
The context I’ve been shown for why someone would do this is they’re either trying to throw you to the floor or pull you in closer so they can transition to a rear naked choke.
When I’ve practiced with a partner trying to do one of those two things to me, the throw to floor is harder to counter, and turning and bursting in works. The pull into RNC is easier to counter, but will often result in a side headlock escape or bar arm choke escape.

A cup is a good idea, you can probably get by without it for a class or two, but better safe than sorry. You shouldn’t really need a mouth-guard until level 2. Other than that just typical gym clothes, shorts, t-shirt, sneakers, maybe a towel. Definitely bring a water bottle though.
July 7, 2012 at 12:23 pm #85397stuartfMemberRe: New to Krav Maga
I think the most common mistake I see when working with new people (and I was guilty of as well) is that they want their punch to be stronger so they end up sort of pushing the pad. My advice to avoid this and end up punching stronger sooner is don’t worry about the strength of your punch and focus on the technique. When you get the technique down the punch will naturally be strong.
July 7, 2012 at 1:41 am #85381stuartfMemberRe: New to Krav Maga
Just relax and pay attention. Drink a lot of water during the day before you go and bring some to drink during class. If you feel like you need to stop or you’ll puke get outside and breathe some fresh air. It’s a lot less embarrassing to take a little break than to puke all over the mat (and it’s easier to clean puke off the sidewalk).

quote TheDarkKnight:Good thread!
I’m going to second Lenny’s idea. If Kevin decided to write an unbiased book with scans of documents, historical photos, and other information….I’d buy it! It’s hard to follow the Krav Maga history without personal opinions.I’d buy one too.

Yes, I found it quite telling that the anonymous author praises a particular org while finding fault with all the others, I wonder if he might actually be one of the people he lists in his hall of fame…

quote Carl:I wanted to canvass opinion on this site I just found: http://whatiskravmaga.webs.comquote Carl:Do you agree with what he says about YOUR federation?I train with KMWW, here’s what he says about it:
quote :Darren Levine, 6th degree black belt and (claiming to be) recipient of a Founder’s Diploma from Krav Maga creator Imi Lichtenfeld, founded the company. The company certifies instructors and oversees quality control at hundreds of authorized Krav Maga Worldwide training centers in the United States, Canada, Japan, Mexico, and Europe.
The education level is good.
Style: The style can be described as rather usefull. The setup however is typically Mc Dojo, They dragged in useless technique to thicken the syllabusI don’t think I’ve heard of any of the legit orgs questioning the founder’s diploma. I’m pretty sure I found a picture of it online once, but I can’t seem to dig it up now. I didn’t see any reason to doubt that it was real at the time.
I don’t think my school is a mcdojo at all, but I can’t really speak for every KMWW school (I’d suspect that they run the gamut, but I hope more are good than bad).
I’d love to know what techniques he considers useless and dragged in. I’ve done a little research into the difference in curriculum from org to org and never seen anything really glaring.
