    Re: Women in KM?

    quote Phoebe:

I have great days in KM where I love it, love the aggression, love to really get in there and fight. But so often, I think if I weren’t under contract, I’d quit.

Realistically? Learning to be aggressive was something I needed. But if someone is intent on hurting me, and I’m empty handed, I’m probably going to lose.

I’m so sorry to hear you say that. You have to get out of this mindset. It is important in your training to take yourself out of your comfort zone and train in situations that scare you or make you uncomfortable. No one likes these situations and some of the drills can be very daunting, but it’s this type of training that will help you on the streets and will give you the confidence it seems that you need. I’m 5’3 and 110lbs. I’m getting ready for my blue belt exam and I’m the only female at my level in my school. Needless to say, I get tossed around and bruised up quite a bit. I used to absolutely hate it. There were days that I thought this just sucks and I’m tired of getting my ass handed to me. But I can tell you Phoebe, I seriously doubt someone my size is going to attack me out on the street. If I am attacked it’s going to be by someone much bigger and stronger and I’ll be damned if I’m not going to know how to defend myself. Don’t give up on yourself or Krav. Train as hard as you can and in as many different scenarios as possible. Your life may depend on it one day.

    Re: Hard Wrist Blocks

I have the exact same problem in my left wrist. I wear a brace to give support and absorb some of the impact when we work our 360 and inside defenses. It still hurts, but the brace helps with the instability. The plus for you is that most people are right handed so you’ll be defending with your left hand/arm the majority of the time.

But by all means, don’t let it keep you from training, just work within any limitations you might have. Your instructors and partners will help you tailor your training to suit your needs.

Re: Getting over being glove shy?

I have the same problem being that I’m 5’3″ and 112lbs – everyone is bigger than I am. I try to get to my opponents dead side, give a few shots and get back out before I take too many. But no matter what, I’m going to take a shot or two on my way in. I try to focus on defending as much as I can, delivering a nice combo and getting back out as quickly as I can. You should always give your opponent a little love as you back out as well, better to have him/her eat one than you.

Smaller people will always take some on the way in, you’ll just have to get used to that, accept it, and overcome it. Keep training.

Did Trish actually let someone use it on her?

Oh hell no! I tested it on myself on the low setting – not too bad, but there’s no way I was letting that thing near me on the higher settings.

Many thanks to the S.O. guys who put on a great seminar. My arms are still swollen and bruised. thumbsup

    Re: Simi Valley Krav Maga

Simi Valley Krav Maga is IMHO the best! Check out the website for more info http://www.simivalleykravmaga.com or just come in and visit. The current schedule is on the website, but we’ll be adding a lot more classes beginning July 7th. Hope to see you there!

Re: Can’t sleep after KM classes…

I have the same problem. When I first started taking classes it happened just about every night. I got pretty used to not sleeping. Now it only happens a couple of nights a week. So now, I’ve decided that sleep is over-rated.

    quote unstpabl1:

Trish your kid did good. That kid woulda thrown him around everytime he felt like it and worse after he became the tattletale. Now even the 4th graders will avoid him

Very true! My son was very happy to report the next day that he was praised by some of the older kids and was called “Little Bruiser”. He feels more confident and some of the other kids will know not to mess with him.

    Re: Bullies

The zero tolerance policy regarding violence is a good one in theory. The problem is that both parties are usually punished equally regardless of who the instigator was.

I received a phone call from the principal last week telling me that she had my 5 year old son in her office for fighting. I almost had to laugh before I heard the story because my son is 3 feet tall, weighs about 32 pounds, is in kindergarten and is a really little guy. I asked her what happened and she said that he had beat up a 3rd grader. Yes! was my initial thought, but I had to be the concerned parent and get the details. Turns out that the kid (a giant compared to my munchkin), had picked up my son and when my son told him to put him down the other kid basically dropped him so my son punched him in the groin. When the kid doubled over my son front kicked him, which knocked the kid down and then it was ground and pound time. Hmmm. Sound familiar to anyone?

He got in trouble because violence was his first reaction rather than telling a school official. He didn’t get suspended because he’s only in kindergarten, instead he and the other kid had to pick up trash from around the school.

I told him that, while I applaude his superior KM skills, he needs to try to resolve conflict without violence in the future. Because of his size he gets picked on a fair bit, but he’s learned how to hold his own. Now we just need to find his off switch.

The schools don’t care if the kids are just defending themselves. Fighting is fighting and therefore unacceptable. Unfortunately, I don’t think they can change their policies either.

    Re: Iron Man ROCKED!

I agree, it was a great movie. If you haven’t seen it yet be sure to stay and watch the clip that rolls after ALL of the credits. It’s worth waiting for.

    quote CJs Dad:

I currently have a broken toe – but only because I felt bad since Trish broke hers.

An empathy break! Very thoughtful of you, Sean. Aside from the broken toe, I’ve also had a broken knuckle.

    Re: no sweat?

Eeeewwww! Yucky! My suggestion to you guys is to bring an extra shirt or two and change it during class that way you won’t be dripping everywhere nor will you offend your partner by being all yucky. That’s just me, though. ;):

Good to see you on the boards, Corey!

The Simi Valley Krav Troll (aka Judo Smurf or La Rev), had us doing spiderman pushups while simultaneously crawling from one side of the room to the other during the bag class on Saturday. He’s an evil little man!
