Re: Just had my very first sparing against another student, I need tips.

I had another sparring session on Saturday and have an issue with being susceptible to kicks. While I am looking for hands, I get kicked alot. I can see if coming but can’t seem to get my knee up fast enough or my hand around to block a front kick to”my” vertical target 🙂 Double jabs got me several times too. I’d block the one and then he’d pull back and pop me right in the face!

I could really use some advice

    Karnos,

I sparred for the first time last saturday and I know exactly how you feel. I had the biggest guy in the class working with me on the drills and then sparred for 2 minutes.I was terrified that I would get hurt. He overpowered me but I did block most of the punches but not the kicks. I guess trial by fire. LOL.

I do NOT like being hit and don’t really like hitting other people. At first apologized after I every punch I connected, dropped my hands and said “are you ok?” then someone hit me while I was doing that and learned that lesson.

Then the instructor had us switch partners so we ended up sparring with 6 different people. I had a hard time hitting the women until one kicked me in the liver, I got over that “hitting girls” thing pretty quick. I learned don’t turn your head, don’t close your eyes, and don’t back straight up, (they come after you) when in doubt jab.

I did hold me own with most and bested 2 people with the length of my arms and throwing lots of combos in a row.

    Looking forward to Saturday!!!!

    Re: Deadliest Warrior

It was interesting watching what I thought was palpable tension while both sets of warriors was on the pistol range. It seemed that they would have started shooting at each other without much provocation and the end the knife with the blade that shoots was the difference. Again I think the one thing that they cannot plug into the program is the heart and courage of the individuals as we all know with the same training some are better than others.

    Re: Problems with Knife Disarms

Kirsten, what is a NIKE defense? I haven’t heard that term before.

Also, my training partner put on full head and face protection and told me to really hit him with a palm strike when we were doing knife work. I am a big guy but at half speed, he flew backwards, the knife went flying and there is still a “Mike” shaped hole in the drywall. The striike was the disarm.

    Re: Deadliest Warrior

I can’t wait for next week “Yakuza vs Mafia” 🙁 I guess it’s out of gas unless maybe we could talk them into “tag teams” kind of like WWE! Ninja and Gladiator vs Apache and Knight! let’s see you run that in the computer simulation program LOL

    Re: Deadliest Warrior

I don’t like the computer fighting model that they use. I believe it’s the same guy that used to do similar fighting models between animals (lion vs. tiger) etc. Both with the apache against gladiator and samurai against Viking they engineered scenarios where the gladiator and Viking couldn’t win. I don’t believe anybody could stand toe to toe with a Viking. They dominated Europe beating Huns, Goths, Saxons, and Romans etc for 900 years. Both the apache and the samurai ran away after there initial failure to kill at a long distance. Gladiator can’t run since it’s in an enclosed arena and the Viking can’t run because he’ll lose control of his boat and never go home. They can’t program motivation and desire. If they’d come up with a better pairing, I’d be happier.

Re: Folks who train at Columbia, MD school…

followup to our conversation last year. I can’t beleive I have been consistent for an entire year. passed my level II test which was really long as one of the testees wanted every single technique reviewed before hand. That took 2.5 hours and the test was 1.5 hours LLLOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGGGG day! Jeff Gordon is making us wear uniforms now. I am not happy since I bought a bunch of black shirts and long pants specifically for the training when he didn’t have what I needed size wise. That is becoming less of a problem as well

    Re: Tips for increasing flexibility?

I have had flexibility issues since I started training 18 months ago. Stretching, sprawls and ground work have given me fits and I don’t look forward to classes on the ground. Would PFN or power yoga help me there? I thought it was a genetic situation and was not able to modify my body that way. I would definately welcome some advice so I can improve my training.

    Re: Frustrated, concerned…

Congrats XD Fender!!! I ended up losing 8 inches off my waist but during Christmas holiday, I put some back on. I need to focus and do the things I did last year to get back into better shape. Do what you can and you will be amazed what the difference level of your energy, awareness and peace of mind will be. I didn’t expect those things but I handle myself differently in all aspects of life.

    Re: Level 1 test

congrats JJ226, it was quite an ordeal but didn’t say anything before so you might not take it the way it was intended. I was concerned for a while that I might not pass as I started to get feedback that I was not doing a technique correctly even more than in class!! I figured that I probably failed that drill but did enough of the other stuff to pass. I didn’t ask how the grading system worked but probably should just to get an idea of what they think I can do better. Level II classes, though just as physical, are more fun (after warmups)

It’s great to know that no matter how fit I get, I can always get better though the process can be brutal

    Re: Level 1 test

I took the level I test December 7th. One of the other students insisted on having every single technique reviewed so the review lasted 2.5 hours. THEN the test started which took 1.5 hours. My legs were very wobbly toward the end. Our test consisted of being broken up into pairs and doing every technique while the Aaron and Otis walked up and down the line reviewing and grading everyone. Then they us break into groups of 5 “circle of death” one in the middle and then the other 4 attacking constantly. We had to defend all chokes. That was a GREAT class!!
You’ll do fine, just don’t quit and go as hard as you can, don’t hold back thinking that you’ll save energy for later, you won’t

doublej226 you’ll be fine. I would go and ask them to review the material before the exam (myself) our instructors said that they would tell us not to test if we weren’t ready. I didn’t take any time off and went to the class the very next day so I could go to my first level II.

    Good luck,

    Re: Frustrated, concerned…

I’d agree to check with your physician first but I came in over 300 lbs and hadn’t excercised in 20 years. The first month I thought I might actully not make it through the class but now a year into it, I feel much better. I have lost 50lbs of fat and am alot stronger than ever and even though I am 20 years older than most I watch alot of them “fall out” before I do.

Do what you can and a little bit more every class. Pretty soon you will be amazed what you capable of.
