Re: Help! Comando Krav in my Studio!!!

Brayson, as we discussed before, you just concentrate on being the best you can be – there will always be naysayers, but your obligation isn’t to them, it is to your students.

Re: Knife defense against passive attacker?

    quote Liquid Rockface:

The gun defenses are the closest thing I can think of to this.

    This.

Redirect – control in a 1-1.5 motion, counter, and disarm with a pushing and pulling motion similar to a cavalier. Which hands/the order of the hands redirecting and controling might change depending on the location of the knife relative to your body. It is in the system.

    Re: Your favorite KM instructors?

I think an instructor who can tell what a student needs and deliver that, no matter what level the student is. And, this will necessarily change as the student progresses.

I have two favorite instructors, for different reasons. You, Ryan, and it was (obviously) phase B – because I got what I needed and had to reach really deep and make a decision about what I was going to be in order to finish. And Kelly C. – because she is able communicate and teach on multiple levels what I always think are difficult techniques, but once I understand what she is saying, I haven’t missed on yet.

But in both instances, the instructors saw what I specifically needed as a student, and then bring that out by whatever teaching method is appropriate. (I’ll just note, the latter one was significantly less painful than the former). And that taught me, in turn, how to teach my students the same way.

    Re: What do you ride??

Used to ride an ST1300, but I sold it (to pay for starting up my school – gotta have priorities!)

Now I only have a KLR650, but I put it to good use:

And yes, the front plastics are held on by zip-ties!

    Re: Problems with Knife Disarms

    quote Kirsten:

    1. Let her actually kick you in the groin, punch you in the face and throat and give as many combatives at 100% power prior to going to the disarm. See how that works for her. I am thinking it will work very well and you may even forget about the knife.

This is why I love this forum!

I second the advice on finding a Krav Maga location to train at. The book is a great reference for the techniques, but there is no substitute to actually getting training from somone who knows the techniques well, particularly with knives. That is an exceptionally dangerous situation.

Re: Students hitting too hard to often?

Hemibuck is taking classes at my school, and the student in question is not the “Aggressive archtype” person, rather he is very inexperienced with this sort of thing and doesn’t understand 1) his own strength and 2) how that strength is multiplied when he goes fast. He isn’t a mean person, nor is he naturally inclined to be overly-agressive. He belongs in fight class given his training level, and he is just starting out there – maybe a little over a month now.

That said, he is having a lot of difficulty understanding how to be aggressive, but not overdo it when training. I have, in fact, had to pull him aside on numerous occassions and tell him to dial it back in regular Krav Maga class because he gets a little wild. Every time he is surprised when I speak with him. He keeps things in check for a little bit, but then gets excited goes back up the dial. Think more along the lines of a bookish guy who learned that he can do these things when he thought he could never do it, but he needs to learn to control that still.

As I told Hemibuck, I’ll take care of it, but he is the sort of student that requires a lot of vigilance from instructors. “Tough guy” students are a lot easier, in my experience, to deal with than this type.

On the other hand, while he does hit a little harder than I’d like for basic fighting, there are a lot of folks out there who hit a LOT harder – and he isn’t one of them. While I understand Hemibuck’s frustration, just remember there are much worse people to train with and in some respects it is good bump noses with this type every once in a while.

Oneness, your points are well taken. As a matter of fact, it is interesting in this individual’s case because his brother-in-law fancy’s himself as an MMA fighter and eggs this student on when he goes there for a visit. There is some of that going on in his psyche as well I think.

And again, Hemibuck, I’ll take care of it at this week’s class. You keep handling exactly how you have been. See you tomorrow.

    Re: Kicking Question

It would be helpful if you describe exactly what you mean when you say “cut kick.” A round kick can be delivered to the knee (or just above it) to damage the joint, or to the thigh (among other targets). A kick to the side fo the thigh really hurts and can also immobilize an opponent (just trust me on that one), but in a defense fight landing a round kick to the knee is a better choice for your safety. So, what is this cut kick you are speaking of.

    Re: Combat Functional Training

    quote garddawg:

So here is where most people miss out when talking about core strength. To transmit the power from the legs into the upper body we have to pass it through the hips into the spine and out into the shoulders/arms etc. So core strength needs to be defined not by having strong abs, but the degree in which you can weld the hips and spine in to a single functional unit. Core strength equals mid line stabilization.

Good, this is what I want more information about. What can I do to focus more on this, or what resources are there to take a look at. I am pretty zealous about writing out the different and new exercises I learn at phase training, or any other training I go to, but I want more of a focused approach along these lines to doing things with my class as well as myself.

Thanks for the link Ryan, I’ll check it out.

    Re: Combat Functional Training

Good point gd. I focus a lot of attention on strengthening abs, obliques, chest, legs. The following exercises get used a lot:
Push ups and variances of push ups, such as spiderman pushups, popping up and over a small striking shield to the other side, etc.
Crunches and variations of crunches (push up with legs and trunk, hold pad between feet and do crunches)
    Flutter kicks
    Bicycles
I don’t know what you call it, but partner lies on back, other partner pushes his/her legs down towards ground and different angles.
    Plank
    Side Plank
    Squats and jumping squats
    Lunges
    Burpees

For me, I guess the “core” is the core muscles used in movement and explosive movement, and also the muscles that must be there to support your self defense and fighting technique.

The list above is not the only exercises we do, but it does comprise the majority of them (eg., I do a lot of things to support quick movement such as hopping over ropes). I’m looking for ideas that focus on supporting developing a student’s abillity to fight or defend him/her self better.

    Any suggestions?
