    Re: "downing a charging bull"?

my first instinct would be either a defensive front kick or front kick to a vertical target. depending on how quick you can step to the side and kick the crap out of the side of his knee.

Sorry it took so long to get back with you guys. I found a Wavemaster on Craigslist for $40! It’s it great condition and I’ve already put it to good use. Thanks for all the feedback.

that’s a sweet deal. i had a wavemaster, but now since i live on the bottom floor i may get that revgear bag and fill it with sand.

Re: My instructor is leaving any advice on another style to take?

    quote Happyloaf:

We don’t have Kali locally sadly and no dedicated muay thai. Just kickboxing that doesn’t focus on competition self defense and fighting; it is mostly a cardio class with some light sparring. We have a ton of TKD and traditional schools which I’m not that interested in because I have spent 3 years training in a traditional style before and it wasn’t for me.

I have heard of an MMA gym about 20 min away but can’t find any information about it on the webs so I think I might take a drive next week.

i can dig it. my km school is 23 miles from my house.
are there any boxing gyms nearby? boxing’s pretty effective for self defense also.

if Darren ever comes to the east coast to do a seminar i’m THERE. i don’t care where it is or how much it costs.

Re: This is why KM is important!

how do you get out of a rear naked choke?
first thing that comes to my mind is go for their eyes, the foot stomp and and swift kick to the groin.

if you are considering another style in case the new instructor isn’t up to par i’d recommend arnis/kali which is a filipino martial art. it’s very practical and useful. i’m seriously thinking about taking it in addition to krav maga.
    muay thai is good too.

Ok, gonna be nosy – what video??

Oh and about the new bag room – it’s gonna replace the old room. The old one ‘will be put to good use’ I was told.

there were some videos posted here that were on a local news website down there. they showed some of the different rooms, like the one with a bedroom where an attacker attacks a woman while sleeping and she has to wake up and defend against a choke. there was some other attacks she defended against. the link to the video was in the post where it was announced that the school moved.

    Re: Level Testing Eligibility

    quote mara_jade:

Before you jump the gun, approach your instructor and ask what he thinks as in what he’s observed in your techniques.

Don’t take this wrong as it’s happened to me. You THINK you’ve got a move down but come to find out it’s off in some fashion. Getting mad because others test and you don’t is irrelevant. You’re supposed to be testing for yourself and not anyone else. Unless you’ve got proof there’s favoritism going on, choose your words carefully.

If it happened to be you need some more tweaking, so be it. Take it as more time for you to perfect your moves, not as anything bad. The test will be there.

It’s been awhile since I tested but we would just sign up and during the review, if the instructors saw you weren’t ready, they wouldn’t let you test.

    i appreciate the advice.
i definitely wouldnt mention anyone else’s technique in the conversation, but i do plan on asking him about it. my main issue is not knowing how or why they pick people who are eligible for tests. seems to me there’s no objective criteria. if it is, why’s it a secret? i pay good coin for krav maga and i’m taking it for my safety and those who i may be with, i’d appreciate a little more openness in this regard. i saw him mention testing to a guy who hadn’t been there in a month or so. i don’t know how long he’s been at the school but there was a gap in his attendance. how do i know? at the time i was going to level 1 classes 3 times a week and taking a basics class here and there. i would’ve saw him over that span of time.

also another reason why i’m ready to move up is, i live in a fairly dicy area where there are robberies, assaults etc. i need to learn more advanced techniques ASAP. alot of guys carry knives and no attacker’s gonna say “i’ll hold off on attacking you since you’re not on level 4”
now i do go to every seminar that i know of, and train as much as i can schedule permitting.

    thanks for your responses.

    Re: Level Testing Eligibility

i asked him could i test a couple weeks back and he didn’t give me a straight answer. he just said keep coming back. he also said my technique was good so i thought i was in the pocket. his exact words were “i love your punches. keep it up” yesterday at class he didn’t mention anything about the test. normally they pull you to the side and let you know if you can test or not.

i wanna know how do they decide who can test and who can’t? is it the number of classes taken? is it some algorithm that they run? i’m confused. there are people testing who’s technique looks like ****.

    Re: Hello from Northern VA

    quote scourtien:

Joined over the weekend have taken two basic classes and love it. Started after speaking to freinds about wanting to get in shape but was bored at the gym. I also just quit smoking so this is great. Everyone in the class is helpful and the instructors are not only good but fun.

i can relate totally. i used to smoke weed when i started, but after a few classes, i had to give it up. i was barely making it thru basics. now i can do 2 classes back to back and even bag on saturdays.

you’re right, they do have good instructors. each of them brings a different perspective to krav maga.

warning: sean and jeff’s classes are usually the roughest.

Re: Other Martial Arts with Krav Maga

i take some arnis classes and that goes well with my training.
as far as bjj i’m interested in taking that as well, but people get injured too much in there so that’s tempered my enthusiasm to take it. i may do a few classes this summer. the ground fighting we do in km comes easily to me

Re: Just took first Krav Maga class need to know if this school sounds legit

stance was the very first thing we did and it’s always covered in the basics class. sounds like you took a level 1 class.

    Re: Your favorite KM instructors?

i’m fortunate in that all the instructors at my school are top notch.
phil is one of my favorites because he takes the most time in answering my questions. shawn is good too as he’s a cop and he relates the class to police reports and his principle of the “pre-emptive” strike. jeff, andy, and pete giannetti, all are good.
instructors outside my school that i’ve trained with and learned from
Jeanine Jackson, Jeff Mount and Otis Berry. All top notch instructors.

Re: Where can I find a list of KM black belts

i have a question about an instructor who “says” he’s a black belt. i’m wondering if he’s legit or not because the stuff i’ve seen taught at his school is NOT krav maga.
