Re: Kicked out of class – justified?

For whatever its worth, talk to him. He could have been simply looking out for your safety and best interests as you had been sick and you misinterpreted his good intentions OR well there is the other option. I cant imagine a higher level student after 6 years being treated with anything less than “part of the family.”

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO>

There is never a guarantee ever never..hedging your bets a bit is likely a better outlook. I always remind people that there is ALWAYS a bigger, badder, younger, stronger, better armed, meaner, etc , etc …..gorilla somewhere in the jungle no matter who you are.

Re: What kind of shoes do you wear?

I have found your cheap ole court/running/workout shoes from walmart/big 5/ etc are fine.

Finding a pair of cool wrestling or high ankle support shoes is awesome, but is not the whole point of wearing shoes on the mat to simulate what you might be wearing in real life?

Otherwise the ideal training for your foot is no shoes as it add more grip, trains muscle control, and doesn’t allow cheating like shoes do…

Long and short.. save your money..lol and spend 20 bucks on a cheap pair.

    Re: Colo. KM Winter Camp

I can’t speak to the Colo. Km Camp or even Colo. Km/James H. through any first hand knowledge. What I can say is we have an instructor with roots with Colo. KM and James H. that is first rate. Knows his stuff cold and is a very good KM practitioner, all around martial artists, and has a lot respect for James H. and Colo. KM. Enough for me. whens the camp:)

Re: Out of shape, thoughts on first class and partners

As to partnering..just grab someone who looks friendly, competent, and go for it. Any partner , especially one with more experience or more advanced, should realize when it’s your turn he’s there to aid in your training. Trust me.. no one is thinking this guy sucks or is limiting what they are doing. And if they are, shame on them to be frank. I’ve had a lot of very new people and relish the chance to see them evolve in their training. I look at it as a gift to have the priviledge to work out with someone newer in fact. So don’t worry about it.. train you for you, and the rest will fall into place.

Good luck.. its all part of the journey 🙂

Re: BJJ guy considering crosstraining in KM, but first…

OK before my lil bjj story. I think bjj is awesome, have an interest myself, and have many friends and family that do it very heavily. Now the story. BJJ guy comes to a krav class. He was a brown belt under machado i think. Anyways, after class we are talking stuff and he says lets roll around and I’ll show you some stuff. Cool. So he put me in some type of choke from the front ( like a cross choke or something) as a demo and said what would you do now as he started squeezing. He was wanting to see the magic Krav techniques in action I guess. Ps. Didn’t know any by the way. I reached out and bit his arm ( only enough to leave a red mark ) and he let go. He gave me a funny look and said what was that. I said only thing I could think of, but you let go. Never came back. Hmmm…..

Re: Krav Maga experts/instructors that AREN’T widely known

To the question re: Wingate etc.

My understanding is that there is Wingate Institute ( Dr. Guy Mor head) and then there is the Zinman College for Physical Education and Sport Sciences at the Wingate Institue through which Avi is heading the course and such. He is on their website as well as the fact that the proposed instructor certicifcates will be signed by the leaders of that academic institute. It appears both colleges are sanctioned, licensed schools. My understanding is that Zinman is the more professional (dare say graduate level) of the institutions, but I am no expert. It appears , and I caution to say this, that Avi is most definitely a more direct lineage in Krav than at least what I see as the heads of the martial Arts section on the “Wingate Institute” website.

I also know Mr. Levine posted a high recommendation for Avi recently on the Wingate College facebook page which in my view says alot.

Re: Krav Maga experts/instructors that AREN’T widely known

    Trainerto max:

I can offer this bit of insight.. I attended a two day seminar ( plus an additional instructors workshop) with Avi and can say he is a top notch practitioner. He is very reminiscent of old school traditional martial art instructors and is quietly humorous, but deadly serious in his training. He is a no nonsense, straight to the point, not afraid to give ya a lil wake up whack, high expectation teacher. That was my experience anyways.

Also, my understanding is he was Eli Avikizars first black belt ( who was Imi’s first black) and goes way back. In fact, I think he was part of the first team that came over to the U.S way back. Look up K.A.M.I–Krav Magen. Anways, other insights would be great.

    Re: Contrasting Krav and Aikido

The training philosophies of aikido compared to Km couldn’t be farther from each other, however, many aikido techniques could easily feed off some of the basic krav defense, ie. do the krav defense and rather than release and strike your way out go into more an aikido perspective for control/take downs etc. Also, much of the aikido footwork could be directly related to Krav.

I have studied both, and certainly see the link and also where in its lineage there was thought given to it. We simply don’t emphasize those aspects for whatever reason and stay almost exclusively with a striker mindset.

As I said above, its the training mentalies that differ so much that creates the issues. Aikidoists ( depending on style and focus) very much focus on harmoniously redirecting another’s energy/attack. In fact, I have Aikidoists tell me that the ultimate goal is to do no damage to your opponent all and to essentially win him over with your complete mastery of him. Altruistic sure. Unfortunately , sometimes this can come across as soft or passive. Krav welll is Krav as we all know.

Re: level 1 vs level 2

    quote Sittingdog:

I reread what I wrote and I am being overly harsh, but this is important and time is limited. I know the results of training failure, reinforcing bad technique commits it to muscle memory which is a big problem.
I don’t mean disrespect, but when you are partnered up with someone who gasses out after a few seconds of a longer drill you won’t learn much just standing there in front of a panting opponent. What should I do in this situation?
Or during a blocking drill and the partner refuses to throw a block able punch (as in the are nearly a foot away from hitting me no chance for connection) How can I make those monuments better?

I’d suggest you act as a good team member, mentor, and facilitator. You learn not just through your own training, but also in helping others come along at whatever level they may be at. Maybe you learn compassion and a bit humility more than a good combo, but they are all valuable assets. In fact, IMO that level of mental training and dare I say ego check, is more likely to save your ass in a heated encounter than a perfect knee to the head. The point being is sometimes not all learning is physical, there is an attitude and mental aspect as well. So think of it in those terms. And yes before you know it, you’ll have a new friend who will always remember you helping him along and these partners may even surpass you requiring you one day to seek their mentorship and compassion.

Re: Training with gloves or not

An ongoing discussion I always seem to have. I always get the look of why don’t you wear gloves for anything ( sparring excepted of course..and thats for them not me ) I don’t wear gloves, wraps, etc. in Krav, nor when doing bag/focus mitts etc in kickboxing. Theory being.. I never got into a REAL fight with a set of gloves, wraps, etc on. I want the hand as conditioned as it can get, then at least I know what I can take or not and won’t have any artificial sense of security.

    Just my opinion.

Re: Unable to make Krav Maga class…what about JKD?

Try speaking to the school owner/Head instructor and simply ask if he’d reduce the monthly for a once a week deal. Most schools are fairly flexible in the tuition department, especially with students and youth. My guess is they would rather have a new young, eager student once a week for a reduced rate than not at all. Doesn’t hurt to ask.. never know.
