Re: Bas MMA Workout for Southpaws?
I’m a lefty and I just do the conversion in my head. You can always throw the combination as Bas calls them but I like to convert it.

For straight punches, you could use “Inside Defense” which is basically redirection of the punch with same side hand and a slight head movement to the outside. You can also use an A-Frame (palm of hands on forehead slightly angled out to create the “A”, chin down, eyes on opponent) and roll with the punch.

quote Nixxon:Crossing your legs over each other to protect the ground? Bad move in my opinion. Why on earth would I want to balance on one leg and then twist on it while swinging my shin to deflect a kick? I think the defence your thinking of is against a round kick.To all those who have the “don’t drop your hands” mentality. I’m totally eye-to-eye with you on that one. However, your really not going to find anyone who is going to do a groin kick and then immedietly punch, especially if your using your hand (or hands) to control thier leg and sweep them off balance. Plus, whats keeping you from moving your body around or your head to avoid that perhaps awkward and powerless punch with thier leg in the air?
IMO best case scenero is you deflect with the hips, however in a instinctive reation I’m most likely dropping my hand or hands to deflect and control then leg and then burst in with a hammer, plam heel or punch to the throat, if not give them a knee to the groin while I still have control over that leg.
Its hard to explain on here, but if we were standing off I could show you what I mean.
No, I’ve seen this defense using the lead leg to block the groin strike. The variation is to drag the lead leg toes on the ground in until the knee crosses the center line to block the kick. I’ve used it and it’s not a problem for me.
My biggest problem with dropping hands is that you may set yourself up for a punch if the kick is the feint.

I usually work with the same 5 people. I try to work with others outside of this group but I guess there’s that comfort level working with the same people.
I don’t feel like I’m missing something working with the same people… Like you, we help each other out and can be aggressive during drills.

I thought the Featherweight title fight was awesome! It would have been great to see a knockout or a submission win but those two guys were just too tough to let it end early. Pulver has one of the toughest chins I’ve seen. Faber rocked him continuously but he withstood that and fought back. Their ground games were solid so they basically neutralized each other out when they took it to the mat.
That Bantamweight title fight was also action packed. I see them doing a rematch in the future.

There’s also that Bantamweight fight between Torres and Maeda as well… should be entertaining…

I usually do pyramids of pushups, situps, and squats/lunges. If the hotel has a lot of floors, I usually do stair running or just go running.
How about bringing along a jump rope?

How’s your movement? Are you standing there waiting for the quicker guy to hit you or are you moving to prevent him from getting a bead on you?
You should try to work on the inside. I’ve got short arms as well so I like to work in the clinch, especially against faster or taller guys… drives them nuts. Try mixing your punches (hooks, body shots, uppercuts) so that you don’t become predictable when you get in close. As a disclaimer, I do occasionally eat some punches on the way inside but at least my sparring partner is now in my punching range.
Bag work helped me work on the basics (chin down, placement of hands, kicks, etc). I also got tips in the form of hook shots to the head from my sparring partners which helped remind me not to leave my arm out when I punched…
My instructors (super folks!!) were also right on top of my butt when I did things like drop my hands, boxed with my chin up, etc.

This subject was discussed on a couple of previous threads so just do a search on the topic… here is one that comes to my mind:

quote BradM:“They teach a lot of that kind of stuff in CKM (canine krav maga).”There you go slamming CKM again. Can’t you guys give it a rest? Defending against dog attacks is a good topic, let’s keep it on track.
You mean you haven’t seen this thread? http://kmforum.kravmaga.com/showthread.php?t=2674
There is a sense of humor on this forum which makes it fun to read even when the topic is a serious one.

Silva was just awesome with his striking. I think he is the best P4P MMA fighter right now..
They showed Koscheck vs Hazelett from the un-televised portion after the main event. That was an entertaining fight.

Mir didn’t look like he lost his agility…. and kept his cool even though he was getting pounded by Lesnar from the start. That knee bar was awesome.
GK, they have video on dailymotion for this fight and Sylvia/Nogueira.
I like that Sylvia/Lesnar matchup…

I don’t know what fight science show RQ watched but in the first one, the Muay Thai fighter was a world champion and not some chump off the street.
I thought it was a great show with the numbers to show what kind of pounding the mma fighters take in the ring.
Bas was pretty funny with his comments and antics. I wished they did an analysis of his liver punch. That would have been cool!
