Re: Staying in Krav Maga worthy shape without Krav Maga
Adding to my previous post for those who are interested, Muscle & Fitness Magazine is featuring an article on CrossFit in their May issue and from what I hear it is pretty good so you might want to check it out.
I know I will for sure.

quote Happyloaf:I just started at a FL ATA school and they mentioned the upcoming test. I will not be ready since it is this Saturday and I started a few weeks ago but if they do another test I am going to try and be ready for it…I do not know what level my instructor can teach to though. Can I check that online?
No you would have to ask your instructor what level of Krav Maga they teach to.

quote raising_arizona:Wow, I was just about to start a post asking about weight lifting techniques for Krav. I seem to be getting my ass kicked just doing pushups and crunches. :(: I’ve been doing heavy weights: 2-3 sets of 8-10 reps until failure, and I think I need to change my routine.Perhaps CrossFit is the thing.
I’m certainly not that experienced at it but I can tell you just from my short time of doing CrossFit that you will really notice a difference.
Go to CrossFit.com do the research on the FAQ and then go to Garddawg’s website brandxmartial.arts.com and check out the Scaled Workout of the Day and give it a shot.
I will be more than happy to pass on the information that was shared with me the best I can from here. I have a list of articles from the site you can do research on to help you plus brandx has an awesome forum with lots of helpful folks.

I just started doing CrossFit about a month ago and can already feel a difference.
My workout today for an example consisted of 16 minutes of Tabata. If you’re not sure what that is, it consists of doing 20 seconds of an exercise all out with 10 seconds rest and doing this 8 times in a row without rest.
My coach had me do 4 exercises in a row including squats, medicine ball clean, kettlebell swings, & thrusters.
Let me tell you after 3 hours my legs are still fried but I’m loving every minute of it. :):

I don’t feel the training I am receiving in ATA is inferior nor do I have any knowledge of them renaming it to “ATA Warrior Combat Systems”. Our instructors still refer to it as Krav Maga in every sense and although we may not have the niceties that the larger schools have, they do a reasonable job with what they have.

It started for me last year. I’d been a heavy smoker for longer than I care to remember and I finally put them down and knew that I needed something to get me in shape and keep my mind off of cigarettes.
I figured that something structured such as a martial art would be ideal for me as I needed a motivator to get me started and I always wanted to learn some form of martial art. Up to this point the only fighting style I had learned at any time was boxing and that was purely on a level taught by a childhood friend.
I started doing research and watching Human Weapon, I found the local Tae Kwon Do academy was teaching Krav Maga so I decided to take an introductory class and was hooked.
Now I can’t get enough of it and wish they would do more than 2 classes per week.

I too am curious on when they will air this episode.
Since the last Fight Quest aired last week there is a void of good programs on TV.
Hope to see it soon.

Another thing you have to watch out for with the stand ups especially in an apartment is the bags still dont stay in place with just sand.
I’ve had the displeasure of finding out first hand what happens when it hits the wall of my living room will do. When I moved it out from the wall I found a nice large indentation in my drywall.
Ouch that’s gonna hurt!

quote Old Grappler:Tim…I’ve had 6 classes so far, and with a little luck could get 8-12 more before testing…
I’m not sure about testing at the end of April. If it were me I would think it was to soon since you only do one class per week but everyone is different.
I recommend buying the “Complete Krav Maga” book as this will definitely help you with training as it contains all the moves broken down by levels as well as good instruction.
Also you want to work on Cardio as the level test (from what I am told since I haven’t gone through it yet myself) will test your limits then you are required to perform the moves after you’re at the point of exhaustion. Again all this is from what I am told by others.
I also recommend buying the Bas Rutten Training CDs & DVD and if you can work with a heavy bag the rest of the week doing the CDs. These are good for working on punches, kicks, & knees & give you a good cardio workout.
Hope that helps some and maybe some others can add to what I have added.
Good luck.

Grappler, how many classes have you had so far?
In general the norm is 3-4 months at 2 times per week to be ready for level testing. It’s different rules for testing at every school I know that.

I wouldn’t have come out either after that beat down. She pummeled that girl from the get go.
Wow, very impressive.

I was real disappointed in that fight.
The Kongo vs Herring was more entertaining IMO.

Just dont hook up with JKD Extreme.
