Re: What did you do in Krav Maga class today?

Last class was headlock and bear hug defense.

    For combatives we did elbows.

    Re: Rear naked choke defense?

What about if you do a rear naked choke hold and the target is picked up.

My friend who is a correctional officer was telling me about a tactic where the attacker would place you in a rear naked choke, but would place the hand on the BACK OF THE HEAD so you are unable to grab their hand.

What is the possible defense for this?

Re: "Training is great and all, but useless in a real life situation"

I really appreciate the quality of the responses that i’m getting on this forum – the people on here seem to be wise in more than just the physical art of fighting.

Every single day that I train krav maga i get a new sense of confidence…its raising tremendously. Then again – i am still a kid and i don’t like it when people make me feel inferior physically (as far as the alpha male perpsective)…I just need to keep training 🙂

Just so we’re clear – this guy is NOT a bully to me, he is just one of those people who thinks he is better than everyone else (apparently he could kick any of my instructors asses…one of my instructors is only 5’2″……but he has trained MA straight since he was 4…he’s 23 now)

He can’t really attend a krav class for a while because of his schedule, but i would love to get him in there 🙂

Definitely some great level headed answers guys 🙂

I just want to be a little more respected as the “nice guy who would help you out no matter what”…because that guy was used several times.

Krav Maga has helped me to develop (and continue to develop) into that person… i remember when i didn’t even know how to put wraps on…and i thought i was gonna die after the warmups…now the classes are so fun that i barely even realize that an hour – hour 1/2 has gone by.

Re: "Training is great and all, but useless in a real life situation"

It just bugs me to **** how everyone immediately thinks they can kick my ass because of how i used to be.

Now i weigh 146 lbs, benchin 250+, squatting 350+, DL 350+ ( i know this stuff doesnt matter but i thought i would throw it out there)

Before krav i did train about 2 years of tae-kwon-do as well. (but took off quite a few years in between taking the two classes)

I’m almost out of high school – and i guess im just frustrated that girls ignore me as some sort of loser (havent even kissed a girl since 8th grade and im a senior now), guys think they are better than me and that i can’t defend myself anymore.

I guess it’s normal for this stuff to get to your head, Sun Tzu’s quote really inspired me, however.

Out of curiosity – after 2 straight years of krav maga training (with a trip to Israel to see how they train there…yes im planning that in about 5-6 months) do you think that would give me the confidence i need to oblieterate any life threat.

I have no interest “friend scrapping” with my friends or any other people (as this is relatively common in high school)… i don’t feel comfortable using my defense for headlock takedowns (groin punch and use your hands above their forehead to throw them down), hammers to the neck, kicks to the groin, etc…but if it was a real life situation i feel that my reflexes would take place.

I think im getting addicted to my krav classes…they are soooo much fun and informative 🙂

How effective would only 4 months of training (at 4 days a week in level one and two moves) be against most of these so called “scrappers” that have absolutely no martial arts background?

Re: When does it become considered "assault" instead of self defense?

    quote saruotoko:

Okay, first question….what in the world is that “Krav Maga takedown” move? Your description of applying pressure to the temple and spinning the target isn’t ringing any sort of bell. It’s certainly not in the instructor manual through Level 4. By this point in the system, I’m pretty sure I’d know what that move is. 🙂

Second question, from my perspective (and not a legel opinion), if the attacker is down and no longer a threat, and/or not moving anymore….at THAT point, if I continue attacking, I’m in trouble, legally.

I think the big determinant is whether or not you had an opportunity to safely exit the situation. If you HAD that opportunity and failed to take it, I believe you then are “in the wrong.” Could one of the LE instructors weigh in on this?

Disclaimer: Mario doesn’t have a clue what he’s talking about (RE: Legal information), and is only voicing his own humble opinion.

    Mario

The move i’m talking about is where you grab them, do a knee…and then use the same grip and spin them down (if they went for your legs, it would be even easier to take them down)…not really a full on “take down” but it gets them to the ground.

learned it in a KM level 1 class.

    Re: My Summer time vow

    quote AviatorDave:

Jdawgmcb – question for you – what are the competitions in high school level powerlifting like? Which lifts are used? Are they OL, or the more common bench/squat/deadlift?

And how much do the leaders typically lift in the different events?

We didn’t have powerlifting when I was in school. Football, Basketball, and track was about it. Now they have powerlifting, lacrosse, hockey, and several other sports in the districts around me – a lot of opportunities we didn’t have.

We used the traditional weight groups…98,114,123,132,148,etc to unlimited and the three lifts were bench squat and deadlift…usually if you were over 148 lbs a 1000 core was pretty good for the state level.

    Re: My Summer time vow

    quote AviatorDave:

Sounds like you’re committing yourself to overtraining and burnout. 5 days of weightlifting will lead to no progress, unless you are using “gear”, especially if you’re adding cardio and Krav on top of that. 3-4 days of weightlifting per week will likely give much better results. If you do a 3 day split, go for S-T-Th or MWF, for 4 day splits do something like Mon-Tues, Th-Fri. Depending on how intense your KM classes are, those may give enough cardio. Mine vary between what is light and only moderate intensity for me, so the days I lift, I only lift. On the days I have KM class, I also do either HIIT for cardio or will sometimes run steady state, but still at a high intensity.

You don’t gain strength or size when you’re lifting, gains are made when you rest. And if you’re doing KM or HIIT cardio when you’re not lifting, then you’ll never have any recovery take place. And you’ll also be setting yourself up for joint or connective tissue injury.

I weightlifted all 4 years of high school and competed on the powerlifting team (state level)…5 days isn’t too much (especially when the workouts are shorter) I am watching for overtraining and when I think that it would be more beneficial to stay at home, i do. I did take a little break from lifting though – so i have to get back into it.

and i have spare time because now that im out of high school there really isn’t much to do except the little work i do get and stuff like krav maga.

    Re: My Summer time vow

I have dedicated my diet for krav maga (im on a strict bodybuilding diet…eggs, tuna, oatmeal, etc…no fatty foods…3000-3500 calories a day)

So far its been going pretty good, in three months time I should have learned a lot.

Re: Handling threats in high school

    quote NCSam160:

If this guy has been losing multiple fights, it makes me think he has something to prove. He got torn up in public, and now his ego is hurt, and he needs to prove he can fight.

Be watchful, but let it go. You don’t have to let him shove you around, but I wouldn’t give him the time of day. Nothing annoys bullies more than you not being intimidated by him.

What would be the appropriate action if he jumped me or simply threw a punch at me after a verbal encounter?

Re: Krav vs UFC in real life situation

    quote Night Robin:

Well, after re-reading it, that thread wasn’t really a Krav vs MMA thing. Krav will give you the skills you need to fend for yourself in a Street Fight against both people who know how to fight and who do not. However, it couldn’t hurt to take BJJ and other styles if you want to increase your arsenal.

lets just say any “non-expert” threat then, i know that im not gonna be jack bauer or chuck norris…and i am sure that someone of that level would whoop me, I just want to be able to be able to fend off against realistic opponents (angry ex boyfriend, etc)
