    Re: Left Hook Punch

You could get taken down doing anything pivot or not. So should we not pivot when we throw a straight right  cause it slows you down. Oh I thought we were all about power no set up punches :dunno:. I have done different types of fighting styles for aahhh about 22 years the more tools you have in your tool box the better.

Learn punches in different ways and use accordingly….thumbsup

    Sorry ppl.

But with or withour pivot, i cant do the left hook punch properly.

The pinky is down, the distance is short, the elbow is on the line with the fist…

    :\

    practice makes perfect.

    Re: Left Hook Punch

    quote Kirsten:

Here we go again, hang on :-)… I am not a fan of the “pivot”. Bas points out exactly why the pivot is a bad idea in that video and if you think about it from a self-defense perspective, it really is a bad idea. We are not boxing. We have to understand that the pivot opens us up to takedowns and leg kicks. When we turn our body it becomes increasing difficult to defend against them when you pivot. None of which is allowed in boxing- where that pivot comes from. So they can pivot without consequence.

I don’t teach the pivot and the students overly complicate their hook when they try to incorporate the pivot. You will have tremendous power without the pivot if the punch is done correctly. If you insist on the pivot, just know its not necessary to generate power and opens you up to being taken down- which is a risk we don’t like for self-defense.

Well you dont throw a left hook from a distance its pretty much a close quarter combat tool so being kicked when you do a pivot is kinda far fetched if you do it at the right time. Plus I hope the left hook isnt the only offense your gonna be doing :dunno:. As for you not teaching the pivot cause a Bas video thats cool. Different strokes for different folks. If you connect a well thrown left hook it is lights out. As far as being at risk for a takedown wellllll you could be taken down after anything so my bjj friends tell me thumbsup :dunno: ..

Well before this gets off track here you could generate more power with a pivot BUT it could be done with out it and still generate enough power to be effective. I say learn them both and you pick which one to do at the time of need.

    Re: Left Hook Punch

Also dont forget to pivet your left foot. Once you get it down your left hook could be as devestating as your straight right.

    quote Chocolate Soldier:

Have been thinking about this clip recently & indeed, maybe he would have prevailed if he had footwear with more grip. Pretty sad that a little detail such as shoe treads might have spelled the difference between life & death. Definitely a lesson in there. Really was reminded of this doing some recent travel through airports wearing flat-sole dress shoes. Seriously thinking of switching to Dr Martin’s with more traction soles.

It dont matter how ready you think you are there will always be something that you wish you did different or done better..

I have tactical boots that are water proof and oil/water resistant soles with great traction BUT with the floor full of blood, pepper spray, toilet water it is still very slick and you will end up on the floor/ground:Surprised:
    if you aint carefull.

    Re: Mexico shooting video

Being a LEO the only advise I can give people under attack by a person with a gun/knife/weapon is to TRY to stay under control (as far as emotion fear/aggression) think about what you are doing. FIGHT SMART, I know it is easier said than done and no matter how much training you have it will be VERY SCARY!!!!

Think about the situation before you get in to it, are you just gonna be another victim :dunno:.. Call for help!!!!

Dont bring a spoon to a gun fight…..

That being said the man in the white shirt had lots of heart, bravery & courage and those are traits you can NOT teach. You either have that or you dont….

Re: good video on gun defense and what happens when you grab the barrel

In a real life situation you are not gonna worry about the barrel being to hot or getting pinched.

Most likely you will have a bad guy pulling, punchin, kicking and shooting while you are fighting for your life……

    Be safe & god bless….

Re: Is Rank Important to You?

    This is a great thread.

I have been doing some sort of MMA for about 23years and have always shy’d away from the belt system/levels. In my humble opinion I think they should teach you every move in the art/style with do time of course when the instructors feel you are ready by observing you in class.

For example: All the instructors that have worked with Joe Blow in the last couple of months get together and figure out if the subject is worthy to go to the next level.

The instructors pay attention to technique and how serious the person takes the classes.

BUT lets not lose focus here guys it is a business and they have to do what they have to do.

Re: Basic Strikes not fast enough the Krav way?

Well comparing a boxer to a KM student is like comparing apples and oranges. As far as boxing goes yeah they teach you the pivots. You dont have to worry about getting kicked in boxing. As far as the myth of boxers not throwing every punch with power well it depends on their trainer. I trained in boxing for about 15+ years and my trainer preached power with every punch.

As far as exposing the back of your knee when you pivot throwing a left hook. Well u should be in close when throwing a hook anyway so the kick shouldn’t be as hard. Plus I cant remember only throwing a hook without following it up with other punches.

Kinda funny we were practicing that last night in class. Throwing a 3 punch combo Jab-right & left hook and defending the kick to my left leg.thumbsup

For the people in question that are beginning students with no other experience. Just do what they tell you it will eventually all make sense in the end.

Re: "Training is great and all, but useless in a real life situation"

If all else fails take him (the bully friend of yours) to class with you on sparring day and introduce him to some of your training partners. I am sure they will be happy to show him some of there useless training:combat:. As for your low self-esteem hang in there everything will be ok.

Re: Trends in attacks vs. LEO

One of the things inmates do is cause diversion incidents (fake fights) to get us to respond to a specific locations when in reality there is some other inmate getting his throat cut on the other end of the prison.

We have designated responders to certain parts (yards) of the prison to prevent everyone from going to the same incident unless it is a full blown riot.

It gets interesting sometimes during a riot of 200+ inmates fighting at one time with weapons and seeing about 12 CO’s out there trying to stop it with a can of OC spray and a expandable baton :chair: . We get to trust our partners so much that you dont really think of the dangers until its all over, BUT we couldn’t do it without our gunners which are located in all housing units and in all yards.

FYI – When there are large scale incidents like a riot w/ 100+ inmates we do get what we call a Code 2 or Code 3 response which will bring approximately 50 CO’s from all the yards. That response usually takes about 5-10 minutes do to having to gear up (gas vest – gas bombs & and alot of non lethal weapons that shoot wooden baton rounds and direct impact rubber bullets).
