Re: My observations on Krav Maga culture,it’s growth and instructors.

think that the overall governing principle here should be quality. Does the instructor provide truth and legitimate Krav Maga and the highest quality Krav Maga training he/she can. Not all instructors are created equal. Lineage is not always the dominant indicator of an instructors credibility or ability. However to ignore lineage is foolish. There are many frauds in Martial Arts. Krav Maga is not immune to this. There are certain truths that will never be known regarding the spread of Krav Maga globally. I have my own opinions and theories but I will keep them to myself.

The IDF instructor course though very tough, is not all that long. So length of time is only one method of measurement. I know people who have been doing and teaching Krav Maga longer than I have and they are excellent instructors. There are others who have been around for a long time and they suck. So it’s really a matter of personal development.

I personally do not recognize any Grandmaster. It’s bull****. I have never met a Grandmaster who did not appoint himself the Grandmaster. So forgive me if I don’t bow.

Re: Video explanaition of Ground survival vs Jiu Jitsu

    Well,

I am the guy in the video. What BJJ practioners very rarely want to admit or even consider is that the enviorment and training methodology of the average BJJ/MMA schools are not geared towards street survival. I have seen very good BJJ/MMA fighters get their asses kicked because they never train against multiple attackers and armed assailants from the ground .

Size matters. You roll with a guy 50lbs or 100lbs bigger than you are and see if you can use “pure technique’ by itself to get him off of you. Again. If I will start in any BJJ/MMA practioners guard and he can use BJJ/MMA and I will use Kina Mutai (Goughing and biting) groin strikes, head butts etc… I like my chances.

To your point regarding pain tolerance is well taken. However the biting is more than physical trauma, there is emotional trauma and psychological damage as well. When you consider multiple attackers and weapons you are so far away from BJJ/MMA at that point that relying on that specific skill set will get you killed.

    Re: Ground Survival Article!!!

Worthless is too strong. Useless is too strong as well. I am not enamored with BJJ. I think it is a nice addition to your overall skill set. But again most BJJ schools teach sport BJJ not self defense. So its phony. I am very confident that if I start inside the guard of a BJJ practioner and he is doing BJJ and I am using the tactics I describe in the article and on the video, he won’t like that very much. It is so simple.

    @RESQR1
You missed the point of my article. With all due respect to your experience I have been in many fights. Too many and very rarely did I end up on the ground. Ground survival is not Jiu Jitsu. My students do train on the ground. The difference is that we don’t teach Jiu Jitsu. It is , in my opinion an ineffective street system. Great for the ring not for the street.

    Re: Nir Maman

Nir Maman does not have a relationship with KMW. However this should not deter you from training with him. Organizations do not legitimize instructors. Instructors collectively legitimize their organizations. Find out where he is going to be and train with him. Your Krav Maga will be at another level.

    Re: Nir Maman

Nir Maman is one of the best instructors I have ever had the privelege of training with. I am honored to call him a friend. Full disclosure, he is a dear friend of mine and someone I trust with my very life. He is an extremely talented instructor who is respected throughout the world.

Nir is at my school in Vegas multiple times during the year so if you want to train with him you are always welcome to do come and see for yourself. You will not dissapointed.

    Re: Non licensed Krav studios?

    @oldKMdude

The link above is for the Krav Maga school in Berkeley. Danny is a very good teacher. He is former IDF and in fact he did belong to IKMF and KMWW for many years. Danny is no longer affiliated with any of the organizations officially. I have not asked him about his reasoning, but knowing Danny a little bit, he probably got fed up with all of the b.s. and organizational beefs and discovered that being affiliated with an organization does not make one succesful, again this is my opinion. Anyways I can tell you that if you are in the East Bay and you want to train. You should train with Danny. I have trained with him and he is very, very good.

    Re: Weapons Offense

    Charlie,

The short answer is that weapons offense is one of the gaping holes in the system. I have been writing about this and discussing this with many of the top instructors in the world for quite some time. There are some basic things that are taught but in my opinion, they are very, very, poor. If you are serious about learning weapons offense, I would suggest locating a reputable Filipino Martial Arts Instructor.

I am working with a very good Filipino Martial Arts Guro who understands the difference between combat and fancy Esrima. For any Krav Maga practioner to be taken seriously, he/she must develop a full understanding of stick and blade from both sides!

Re: KMWW, CKM, IKMA, etc, etc, etc

    Well,

The various organizations are led by Imi’s former students. Well at least the major organizaitons are anyways. None of these organizations have any direct connection to the IDF on a an official capacity. IKMA was the original organization and then money, ego and politics birthed the other organizations. Are there differences in some techniques? Yes. Most of these differences have little to do with Imi and more to do with whoever is running the particular organization and personal preference.

There was a lineage tree at some point but I am not sure where it would be now. Kevin Mack would know though. He knows more about the lineage of Krav Maga Instructors than anyone I know.

The differences are very minor and that is why it is so easy to spot the ummm, let’s say the more questionable ones. With that said too many of these guys have fallen into the trap of believing that their rank or their lineage to Imi is going to line their pockets further. It won’t.

    Re: Vanguard Krav Maga

One last thing. There are guys who have self promoted. They are calling themselves Grandmaster, The Source, The greatest Krav Maga practioners on the planet etc… Who bestowed these titles upon these individuals? It most certainly wasn’t Imi. What none of these guys realize is that they are no more succesful because of these self appointed ranks and titles.

    Re: Vanguard Krav Maga

    Kevin,

I was at the same certification with Eyal that one of the guys from Vanguard attended. He is a good practioner and he has trained with some of the very same people that you and I have. He is certainly not a liar or a cheat.

You have been around long enough to know that an instructors lineage does not automatically mean that the instructor is as skilled as his teacher. KMWW does not honor belts from other organizations and I have been told that the reason that they don’t do so is because not all instructors are created the same. For the record there are other reasons that belts aren’t honored either. I don’t really have a problem with any of that. I do have a problem when instructors receive their belt from the same person and one starts to question the validity of the other. But organizations can do whatever they wish.

I believe that people who put too much faith in an organization are just as ignorant as those who do not take the lineage of an organization into consideration at all. I was once part of KMWW and in fact I have many friends here at the mothership. At my school belts from other legitimate organizations are always honored.

    Re: Vanguard Krav Maga

    Kevin,

If he is a Black Belt what would preclude him from promoting his students? How is that different from the self appointed Grandmasters running around Krav Maga now?

    Re: Moni/CKM

    See,

The problem with the whole court case is that some people took the liberty to call their form of Judo and other systems Krav Maga. Those who know martial arts and have studied enough of them, Sean would certainly fall into that category, know Judo and Jiu Jitsu when we see it.

The ridiculous claims and lies that Moni has told only cause those of us who view his “Krav Maga” skeptically to shake our heads. Again Krav Maga is a specific system with a specific methodology and these things can’t be denied.

Organizational beefs aside the integrity of the CKM can and should be examined and scrutinized as much as any other branch of the tree. CKM is not taught on any official capacity to any Israeli unit.

    Re: Vanguard Krav Maga

    Well,

I was at MAIA here in Las Vegas this year. I saw at least three different Krav Maga organizations and none of these were any of the ones that you would have heard of . The world is a big place and apparently there is no shortage of Krav Maga organizations. It does not matter because all instructors are not created the same anyways. Just get on the mat with them and you can judge for yourself. Incidentally I know one of the guys associated with these cats. I think he used to belong to KMWW some years ago.
