Re: What Are The Main (Popular) KM Organizations and Core Differences

I’d also add Krav Maga Unyted to the list. Jarret Waldman came out of KMWW. Former GM of KMWW’s S.O. and WLA NTCs. He developed his own market in downtown LA.

Re: Alpha Krav Maga is better than KMWW???

Yep, Sam Sade was indeed part of KMWW. I took his level 2 classes several years ago in West LA. My recollection was that he was highly knowledgable and had high standards (don’t half-ass in his class). You can’t go wrong with either Alpha or KMWW…it comes down to the school and the instructors you learn from. KMWW has high standards for quality control, and I would think Alpha Krav Maga does too. Bas Rutten hosted a Alpha KM seminar by Sam Sade a few years ago at his gym.

    Re: Roy Elghanayan – ?

Sorry to revive an old thread. I remember reading about Roy Elghanyan a few years ago. He has grown his gym quite well (esp. when you take a look at the yelp reviews). Kudos to him being so successful in Culver City (John Whitman’s training center is also in Culver City). If his techniques in his demo videos work for him and his students, all the best. It’s not the Krav version I’ve been exposed to. So I’ll defer the critique to my more experienced instructors and peers.

I came across this clip on his 4th Degree Black Belt KM test: http://youtubemp4.website/watch/YmiO_Gv9v48 It appears that some of the people attacking him are his own students (wearing his gym’s yellow and orange shirts). That seems a bit interesting. Also, I noticed on another website that he was a “2x Krav Maga National Champion.” How does one become a national champion? I assume it was in Israel?

    Re: Ultimate Krav Maga DVDs

I purchased a copy… it’s great but it’s not perfect. One particular note is that they don’t go over how to be the partner, i.e. how to hold the pad or how to attack. So it’s a good supplement but no way does it replace live instruction. As expected, the disc with John Whitman was great and the techniques are virtually the same that I have learned at NTC. As for the other instructors… there are some differences between the two systems in certain defenses… ex: the defense against the round house kick. The guest instructor defended only with the forearm whereas in the KMW system, we’re taught with the 2 point and 3 point defense.

The little things that you pick up makes it worth checking out tho!

    Re: Pulled Groin ^%#&*!@$($#!!!!!!!!!

does Yoga help??? Should I start doing it or should I wait until all the pain is one?

We actually started off with kicks before we stretched and resumed back to kicks (I think the instructor forgot initially b/c our class was extremely huge).
Lesson of the day: stretch on your own before class

    Re: Bursting

    quote Cottonwood-Combat:

One way, I like to use, to help eliminate or at least lessen any telegraphing of the burst is to practice from neutral stance. In it’s essence, as has already been mentioned, bursting is for those moments when you must go from 0 -100 instantly. No one is more at 0 than when in between steps – one of the basic principles for the use of training from neutral stance with any technique. Plus, speed is predicated on opposing muscle groups learning to flex/relax as needed. Just like in a punch if the bicep flexes (even a little too much) while the punch goes out, it fights the tricep which results in a slower punch extension. The reveres goes for recoil of the punch, too much tricep gets in the way of the bicep doing it’s job to the fullest. So, it took all that to say this – sorry, being neutral stance makes it easier to be fully relxed at the beginning of the burst. Not to mention it’s much more likley to be the case in real life.

    CC

I am having trouble with the advancing straight punch as part of the gun defense from the front. I can burst laterally and such… but right now my problem is that I am hopping as I advance with the straight punch. Don’t know why I’m doing that. I used to be able to do the advancing straight punch right from a neutral stance. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! I feel like a pitcher who developed a bad habit and need a minor adjustment to correct that bad habit but I can’t pinpoint the bad habit/bad mechanics 🙁

    Thanks in advance!!

    Re: Hook Punch- help?

    quote Kirsten:

I apologize in advance, I just arrived home after driving 15 hours from L.A. to my home…. I am tired. Are you punching with your thumb up and pinky down when you make contact or with the pinky and thumbs to the side like a more traditional boxing hook? Perhaps try one over the other and see if that helps align your body better to make contact without injury to your hand…

    Hope that makes sense…

When I make contact, my pinky is down and thumb is up. The adjustment that just crossed my mind is I need curve my wrist more??? I will try the traditional boxing hook tomorrow in class.
wow, that’s a long drive! Did you get to see Marcus’ fight while you were in LA??

    Re: The price you pay

    quote thedaver:

My rate, which I’ve had since 1997, is $74.50/mo at the NTC. Now, I’ve only been able to train very sporadically for past eight years due to various injuries(none KM related) but it is still a great price in my opinion.

I wish this rate is still around! The price I pay is $148/month (Krav & the Fitness package)… But hey, having the option to train (unlimited) at West LA and Sherman Oaks is absolutely awesome  I have a 24 hour fitness membership ($45 annually) but I only go to 24 when I’m out of town, in part b/c the bag classes provide such an amazing workout! In a world of unlimited income, I’d pay for both krav and equinox memberships.

Re: Help with sizing my hand wraps

When I first started, I used those first aid wraps that you can purchase from CVS under my gloves. After your hands are conditioned, you may find that you don’t need gloves or wraps anymore. If you have wrist problems, then stick with wraps instead of gloves.

Oh yeah, I started off with the Krav/Rev Gear gloves but switched to the Yellow Everlast ones. I really liked the gel padding that covers the knuckles. They’re not as durable, but hey, it’s only $20 :box:
