best shape of my life, (not saying much though).
KMWW for 4 months.
Surfing 2 years.will ask to go for the belt test on jan 17, and they might even let me take it.
it’s not just the KM though, it’s you yanks.
you’re some of the most friendly, outgoing and optimistic people on the planet.
I couldn’t have done so much in London, and I appreciate the welcome and the freedom that you, as a culture, have given me.Thanks for letting me in to steal your jobs and women.
Actually, I brought my woman with me, but she appreciates the extra stamina.

p.s. To the 10% of US KMers who are gay, obviously I mean cigarettes.

“not much actual surfing”
yup, that would be me.
still, getting sucked over the falls is character building.
I’ve only been doing this for 2 years now, so I’m a sort of geriatric grom.
Been to carlsbad a couple of times, and del mar and swamis. It’s all good as far as I’m concerned.
I’m pretty sure its good cross training for Krav too, upper body and fear.
You should get back in the water, the dolphins are still keeping the sharks at bay.

well I’ve got a dog, a very non violent one, wouldn’t hurt a flea.
I can tell you she’s quicker, more determined and more creative at sparring than anyone i’ve met training. she’ll also be coming at you too low too fast, like a furry Exocet.
Assume the dog WILL get the first bite on.
Then, do what you can to actually kill it, because it thinks it’s trying to killl you.
I have no idea how that can be acheived. Maybe you can rip its windpipe out.
Possibly, if you try to kick it and miss, where do you think it’s next soft tissue target is?

hi towani,
It has taken me 2 months to heal the ground beef knuckles, (once they got skinned, and scabs formed, they just got pounded in and made everything worse, even under handwraps)
My best advice, switch to open palm strikes until they are completely healed.
It’s a very effective strike, and the mechanics are similar to punching.Your instructors shouldn’t mind too much.

hear hear.
For what it’s worth, we’re warned about going to ground at the NTC in LA, and ways to avoid going there. I don’t mind learning the odd technique to fight from the ground though, I can remember a couple of pub fights from my youth being finished on the carpet.
I guess what you’re seeing is essentially genetic drift, isolated populations of Krav schools evolving into something different.
I find it interesting that there is so much animosity towards CKM. There must be something of value in there, something we could take and teach.
KM is really a philosophy of fighting, or system, rather than specific method. To me, the thin end of the wedge is the eastern martial arts fashion for personality cult. Arguing over who was taught by the father of the system, and has his blessing, is all a bit JKD. Turning to Imi, bowing to the class, mumbling “Kida”, it’s all too ritualised. It would be more use to turn to a sign which reads,
Hit First
Hit Hard
Hit FastNot my words BTW, I believe it’s the Royal Marine Commando fighting system.

Dear Uncle Ruckus.
I get that.
It’s all about C of G I think, especially if, like me, all the weight is above the belt.
I found getting a bit lower helped, and opening out and widening the stance slightly. Now, I can thrust in any direction with more power as I’m not overbalancing at the start of the move. (which will make your body turn down the power a bit to compensate).
Really, looking in the mirror, and making sure my upper body stayed upright (viewed from the front) and central all the time seems to be the trick.
Just like house building in an earthquake zone, the key is a strong foundation.

I wanted a no nonsense martial art. No mumbo jumbo, no personality cults, no uniforms.
More martial, less art.

September 9, 2008 at 2:08 pm #69694duncMemberRe: First Krav Class Tonight!
You’re the second person I’ve seen that’s said that.
In our classes, we do a bit of warmup and stretches, then lots of combatives (punching, kicking, bagwork etc.), usually either building into longer and more complicated sequences, or we develop something else more defensive like blocks or ground fighting. Choke releases tend to be taught as a 15 to 20 min section at the end of something more violent.
I’m lucky to have the NTC on my doorstep, so we have a lot of classes to go to, you should pick up the whole curriculum in a few months.
The combatives are fine as a cardio workout, so I guess we use that as the conditioning part of the class.
I my experience all the instructors are easy to talk to, so I’d suggest bringing it up with them if you feel there’s not enough actual violence going on.
Buy Darren Levine’s book, i think it’s called “Complete Krav Maga”, to give a rough idea of what you’re expected to cover in the first 4 months.
all the best

yes.
about halfway through.
i was told by the instructors not to hurl on the mats.don’t worry, it gets better very quickly.
now i make sure i drink a big glass of water at least 1/2 an hour before class. i think it helps.
mind you, i live in LA where were always in a mild state of dehydration anyway.trust me, give it a month and you’ll be wondering if you could manage 2 classes in a row. (not that i’ve actually done it of course).
anyway, welcome to the club.

thank you simon for the link, and response.
and thank you mara jade for your responses too.
I’ve been getting my adidas pants from sports chalet for $30 and they feel much stronger than my Krav ones, which are a bit more expensive.
With the T-shirts, I’ve got loads in the closet, so I don’t really need any more.
That doesn’t seem like a radical position really does it?
Once I actually get good at Krav, I might want to see what it feels like doing the drills wearing regular pants, or a suit for example. (Ridiculous example, granted).
Maybe groundfighting feels different with a jacket bunching up around your shoulders and restricting your arm movements, I just don’t know.
How about you, you could be in a skirt and heels if the time comes to use KM. Not that I’m suggesting you wear heels on the padded floors, but you know what I mean.
Thinking about it, I’m sure I can train in street clothes if I check with the staff first, so scratch that as a real complaint.
Anyway, gotta go.
see you.
