Re: Looking for a Good Supplement to Krav
If the place has an old school golden gloves boxer and a Gracie BJJ guy Id say definitely worth a shot and try it out.

I suggest MMA or any of its components or Jeet Kune Do.
Boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ, Wrestling

Any Jeet Kune Do places nearby?
What kind of Kenpo? Ed Parker?

Fighters that “cut” weight cut weight to qualify for that division. The weigh in is the day before. In fact, boxing watches you and regulates you gradually cut weight which is considered safer than the MMA way of cutting last minute and drastically.
Keep in mind, come fight time, these fighters have already gained 10+ pounds from the cut, otherwise they’d be weak as hell and would have no energy.

The founder of JKD was Bruce Lee. Who did you train with? Anyway, its pretty lame for anyone to go all out on a beginner but I find too many JKD guys are either always trying to prove it works or that their brand of JKD is better than your brand.

Personally for self defense I’d only take Krav or MMA. I don’t want to get into the street vs sport debate here but for me those two will do the job. In my opinion, if its strictly self defense, Krav Maga. If you want to dabble in sport aspects then MMA…location of a training facility can play into it as well.
Traditional arts are great and enjoyable but to ramp up to the point you can actually use it in self defense takes a long time.

The MMA gym I train at isn’t like that at all. They have a very healthy respect for the street. In fact, I have pro fighters tell me they wouldn’t want to fight me in a bar. Of course I know they’d likely kick my butt all over but I think the point is they know they are in for a dog fight.

A pushing punch will know someone back while a snapping punch can drop them straight down.
One of the first things a boxing coach will pick up on when someone starts hitting the heavy bag is they are pushing.
Many advocate pushing through but only using a 2 inch penetration. This allows for the snap and getting the most power.

There’s no burst either. I don’t buy it. Sorry.

quote GaryQ:Based in Scotland Ive trained with Tamir Gilhad, looking forward to October to train with Israel Cohen and in November with Amnon Darsa.
Good times ahead, good times.I know of some JKD guys in Scotland. They really feel JKD is necessary over there with so much stabbings…Glasgow area. I keep saying how Krav Maga might fit even better.
How do you find it?

Why are we calling an Israeli system instructor “Sensei”? Thats for Japanese arts.

Rev, what are the rules an MMA fighter must adhere to in a street fight?

You will become better conditioned for sure. Go at your own pace initially. You will see a huge difference pretty quickly.
3x a week is fine in my opinion. You will be come pretty proficient at the basics quickly.

Did you look into http://www.kravmagabootcamp.com It seems more interactive than Max. My impression of max is they put stuff together and left it there and don’t update. Check out that aspect.
